In the beginning it was a Kirby Block Ball clone. It had simple graphics and simple controls. It caught on, and many anticipated its release. After demo 1, nothing was heard from it again. Then, much later, it was reborn. It had better graphics and better controls, but only a single stage and none of the special features that it promised. Now...
KIRBY'S REBOUND!
It returns, bigger and better than ever! Enjoy fast-paced breakout action Kirby style as you inhale enemies, traverse stunning worlds, and face off against massive bosses! Even better, this time the adventure will land on your screen in beautiful 3D; and you can play it on a PC or a Mac right from your web browser!

DEMOS
------------------------
Demo 1 - Play Online Now! (http://www.wanilla.net/random/kreb/) - Test out the Kirby's Rebound physics engine. You'll need the Unity Web Player, a free and fast install, for this and all future Kirby's Rebound demos.
-
Is the Kirby icon in the upper-left corner his current power?
-
Bingo, and the HUD is the latest thing I've started, so expect it to be a lot more filled up when I'm done.
-
Is that an original icon, or is it from another Kirby game? And is the Border Line score going to be included?
Also, I remember in Block Ball that when you pressed A when Kirby hit the paddle it was a power hit. Needle power let you stick to the paddle and relaunch. It also broke certain blocks. And Fire power was a missile until you hit a wall. I think if you hit spikes while in Fireball form, you didn't lose it's power. Hope that helps.
-
Looks nice, I'll try it out now.
-
>.> there's no demo...
-
Free the Kirby's!
Although, this does look like a good game, I have played the original, (Rainbow Resort had it in it's archives, I think) now a 3D remake is coming to ZFGC.... "Yippe!"
-
To DeathTails, this isn't a remake of KBB. It's a whole new Kirby Breakout title. That also goes for you Meta. There's not going to be a border line, and I'll be rethinking all the abilities. Oh, and also, yes the icon is custom, as are all my graphics. I guess the fact that you couldn't tell means I'm doing a good job. :D
-
I know it's a sequel; I just was mentioning things from the original that could be in the sequel, as are many things in sequels.
-
Well, when I said sequel I didn't really mean sequel. I was just trying to illustrate how this isn't a KBB remake. It's really an entire game of my own making, so it needn't contain elements from KBB.
-
So it's a spiritual sequel. I got it.
-
Woops, I wasn't paying attention at all. I'll try when there is actually a demo.
-
Okay all. I added a demo. Try out the physics and tell me what you think. :D
-
^_^ nice demo
very enjoyable 7/10
-
Thank you! Did you see anything that I should change. I already know that I'm going to try and keep the vertical velocity away from zero so that it can never get stuck slowly going horizontal.
-
hmm... maybe the controls? maybe the arrow keys
otherwise its pretty good
-
You would prefer to play breakout with the arrow keys? I always thought that the mouse was more accurate and stuff.
-
well i dont really mind just a suggestion
-
Maybe have both be an option? I like the arrow keys, but the mouse if just as good.
-
Mouse FTW.
-
Thanks Luke. Good to have someone backing my decision there. :P
-
Darklight's name is Luke? [insert Star Wars joke here] Anyways, I support your decision. As this is a sequel to Block Ball (albeit a spiritual one) arrow keys would keep a somewhat similiar control scheme. But mouse control works as well, and it is much quicker.

Mouse FTW.
I don't see why you couldn't add new concepts, it is a remake. >_>

Yes my name is Luke, yes i have been subjected to many star wars jokes :P.
-
No prob, I used to know this kid named Luke; at the beginning of every school year I said, "Luke, I am NOT your father!"
I should've said [insert obligatory Star Wars joke]; Luke is a pretty cool name, anyways.

Yeah, I like the name. there's not much that rhymes with it, so hardly anyone can find anything to pay me out with XD.
-
Duke, Nuke, Fluke... there's a few rhymes.
On-Topic: I'll check it out tomorrow.
-
Looks neat, but the collisions are really farked :s

Looks neat, but the collisions are really farked :s
pretty much what I was going to say, forgot to say it.
-
Woah, wait. The collisions are messed up? That's important people! >.< Uh, what ones. And how are they messed up?
-
well maybe because you can smash 3 blocks with 1 hit >_>
i played it over again and found that
-
Yeah, not sure what to do about that.. how do real Breakout games handle this?
-
most breakout games are made in flash or java so i dont know :-\
-

Wait, you could smash blocks? I couldnt.
Also, the pad needs to be curved on the sides IMO so you can hit kirby on angles.
-
Luke, if you hit Kirby near the edges he should move at a larger angle than in the center. I can make the angles more dramatic though if you'd like.

Hum that dosen't sound right, if I remember my physics right the angle of incidence should be the same as the angle of reflection?
-
Well, that's true. In a real life situation the ball hitting a flat paddle like this would bounce back up vertically if it was only moving vertically to begin with. However that's not the way that traditional breakout games work, so...

Not strictly true, it depends how the game works, but thats fair enough. Personally I'm just anal about getting things correct.
-
Okay then. Also, right now I have it set up so that there are five separate "hit zones" of a sort on the paddle, and which one Kirby hits determines his angle when leaving the paddle. I think I'd like to make that a more precise system where Kirby's angle depends on his exact distance from the center of the paddle when he hits.
-
Well the point of the paddle is control...
You should be able to manipulate the angle of the ball by hitting it on the sides of the paddle; that's what determines player skill in those games. The paddle should not apply to the rest of the game's physics rules.
The rest of the collisions should strictly be reversed direction (x or y) if you're going with just solid blocks. If you're going with angled blocks, you need to set up proper collision for them. The issue I found with this is it's bouncing off of the chamfered spots on your wall meshes, when it should just be a strict direction reversal.
-
Okay, I'll try and implement that direction reversal thing into the next build. There are variables in Unity for velocity on all axis. I'll tell the x and y variables to multiply by -1 on a collision. ;)
-
^_^ i love this game i cant wait till your finished!
and u said this was a remake where is the original id love to play it
-
Somehow, I got kirby, to jump from right to left, in continous, for atleast 10-20 seconds, then he came back down to the panel.
Other-then-that, it was a great demo, managed to not let kirby die. =)
-
Kingknight: What I actually said was that this is NOT a remake. But it is, as MetaKirby put it, a "spiritual sequel". The original game is Kirby Block Ball for the Gameboy. I could link you to a rom if it wasn't against the law, so if you want it you'll have to find it yourself.
DeathTailsz: Yeah, I've had that happen as well. That should pretty much be fixed when I implement the direction-inversing thing. Thanks for your comments!

Alright, I see the "3d" part, but wheres the "beautiful"? All I see is models and textures of a ball and a block?..
-
Pretty good, except for how when Kirby hits the top part of a block in the wall, he starts to fall. Maybe gravity is set to high? I managed to break all the blocks. And what about BGM? Still, a good game.
-
Ouch ZServ, harsh. ;__; But it's not a finished product you know. There will be background and detail graphics, as well as specific graphics for each individual world.
MetaKirby, background music is on its way. Also, turning off gravity. It worked in the Game Maker version of KR, but it doesn't work here.
-

That's really all breakout is... :P

Which, as I believe Ryan was trying to point out, is hardly "beautiful."
-
Okay, well it was just the way I phrased it to sound promotional. I do intend to get it looking as nice as I can though. :)
-
I added Kirby's Rebound to the Games Database! Rejoice!
http://www.zfgc.com/index.php#?action=games&sa=view&id=42
More work on this game coming soon..
-
I love this game. It's a great game, I'm impressed with this remake. The lighting is great, and the effect is great. Kirby is harder to control than most balls in Breakout games. I like doing the thing where you get the ball above most of the blocks and eliminate most of them in a oner. That's really hard, almost impossible, to do with KR.
-
Yeah, I've noticed that as well. When I put in the code that just inverses the direction of Kirby it should solve that.

Welcome Waddledee to Kirby's Rebound everyone!
-
Looks good! Don't forget Waddle Doo and Gordo! And the fly (forget its name)!
Also, that is totally a NEW CHALLENGER screen there.
-
Heh, I didn't forget them. Waddledoo will be easy, as he shares a model and animations with Waddledee. Also, the flying guy's name is Bronto Burt.
-
For a Kirby fan, I'm ashamed that I forgot that. Need to play more Super Star. Bronto Burt. I was thinking of the ball-shaped enemies. I guess Rocky would fit there too (you need Stone Kirby!)
-
A very fun game. I can't wait to see all the wacky levels you could come up with :P.
The full release will be killer. :)
-
Yes it will. Also, couldn't resist:

-
Thanks guys. :) Nice pic Meta.
-
Hey Mold, you could make it so that you can be one of the following
-Kirby
-Waddle Dee
-King DeDeDe
-Meta Knight
And each one has different abilites. Just saying...
-
I had thought of perhaps doing multiple characters, but I don't think it's a good idea, for the sake of actually completing this project.
-
Well, get the main bulk done (The stuff that must be done) Then when you have the complete project, extend it.
-
It's just that I don't see how those characters could really work. Kirby is the only one who can get powers, so he'd be at a big advantage to other characters. Plus Waddledee is an enemy and Dedede is a boss.
-
Ah true. Nevermind then. Maybe instead, you make recolours of kirby availible?
-
Now that I could do. ;) I want to have some unlockables after all, for more replay value.
-
I know!! Then you could do Meta Knight and Waddle Dee ones. No abilites just anotehr version to play as. It doesn't need to make sense. IT'S AN UNLOCKABLE!!
-
>.> We'll see. Anyways, unlockables don't have to be characters. They could be modes, stages, sound test, etc.
-
Or combinations. Technically Meta Knight was a mode in Nightmare in Dreamland. Also, glad to see you liked the pic. He was in a fighting pose. Ideas:
CHARACTERS
Waddle Dee
Meta Knight
Gordo (Breaks any block, kills any enemy, maybe could be a secret power or something)
OTHER STUFF
Stages (I think Block Ball has a secret stage; I'd check it out if I could beat the damn Border Lines)
Time Attack (how many stages can you clear in 1, 3, or 5 minutes?)
Boss Rush
Just some thoughts.
-
BTW, your project of the week. :D. Check front page.
-
I noticed that when I logged on earlier.
-
Woah, didn't notice that. Cool! ;)
-
Congrats moldorma :D
-
Hey, this is a cool game and i enjoy it, but when i hitted kirby at a corner he changed direction and flyed out of the screen and nothing happend, cus you only loose if he goes down and not left or right.
( idk if this is allready posted )
-
Hold on, how exactly did Kirby get out of play? He must have gone down the Z axis.. >.< I guess I'll keep him forced to one Z value. Sorry about that!
-
How are the new enemies coming, Moldorma?
-
I haven't had much of a chance to work on this for the past few days. With summer ending so soon, my family is trying to do as much stuff as possible. Plus I'm working on our commercial game Superstar Galaxy as well as this, and that clearly takes priority. Wait for the next rainy day. ;)
-
Look amazing. I will most certainly be giving this a try.
-
August 13, 2008, 07:44:08 PM <-- That was the last post befor Ace.
Is this project dead or something cus i want this to be finished, it is pretty fun to play when you have nothing else to do. XD
