Title: Graphical Presentation - What style to use?
Post by: Theforeshadower on April 04, 2011, 12:29:57 am
Graphical Style
Purpose of this poll:
*As a community, we need to set the constraint on the style of graphics for this project.  Why?  It will help give the game design a better, more realistic focus.  Some ideas can work in one style, while others might prove to be too over-the-top.  Also, more members may have better talents say LttP style than they would with the Minish Cap style.

Essentially, it helps keep things in prospective so during the design process, we don't get useless, grandiose ideas that would work for say a 3D project or a more detailed graphical style than what we decide upon.  Later on, the graphical style chosen would play a part in the Art process as seen with the instruction manual examples.

With that being said, here are some better explanations or screenshots:

Link to the Past

Four Swords Adventures

Custom/Original
*There are many resources on the net such as Spriter's Resource for a good idea on custom/original sprites.  However, bear in mind that using custom or original styles will take longer with a high chance of not getting finished but would bring forth some great results.

Combination
*The idea here would be to combine styles.  An example would be to recolor Link to the Past using Minish Cap's palette, then add the Four Swords Adventures filters.

Other
*If you have a better suggestion, vote other.  Things here could be LA, AoL, etc.  It is your choice.

This voting will be closed in two weeks.  Once the community has decided, that will be that.  You are allowed 2 votes as well in case you are in-decisive.  You are being given the power as the community to decide the graphical presentation.  If you do not vote, then you cannot complain.  If you joined after it was decided, I am sorry.

But in all seriousness, have fun with voting. Enjoy; don't rage.

Personally, I am pulling for LttP and Combination.  As the example I have given for combination would be quite amazing, at least IMO it would be.

I'm a little confused. If when resuming the project you are using the elements of its story that have already been put out there, why is the graphical style up for changing when there have been a lot of Minish Cap style stuff done for it as well?

*shrug* It's up to the community.  The Game Design directors have chosen to redefine the style of the game, whether or not that's using a new style or staying with MC.

I don't see a problem it's not like we had tons of graphics from the last project >_<, just link and the city, in which the city might be reorganized depending on what we define, if people like what we had on the last project just vote for the old style.

While this is true.  We feel that it is best to look at the team we have and let them choose.  It won't do any good if we set the style to say Minish Cap, but our team is more comfortable working in Link to the Past.  Progress would either be slow or non-existent. No one on our team knows our teams ability better then themselves.  Now I realize this is up for the whole community, but it is the community that will need to support this project for it's progression.

Hmmm..  I really liked the idea you gave of recoloring and adding filters.  I think that could be both unique and really good looking.

Keep in mind I don't come from a spriting background, but I think a Link to the Past style with the broader color palette and vibrance of MC would be a good compromise, since our spriters seem to have more experience in that style.

Since there are already some graphic resources for KoT, we should just use that, or we can make something sort of mixture of both lttp/mc sprites, that will be interesting.

sorry for then random post, my internet is back up lol.

Guys I know this is gonna be a lot of work but listen.

We should change the resolution of our graphics. Make them a higher resolution... you know so our game can look nice full screen.

Yeah, I've got to admit I'm the one person who voted on "Custom" style over here. I understand this is a Zelda game and stuff but I think it would be cool to have a brand new style. Sure it will probably take more time but in terms of resolution of graphics it would help making them from scratch. JUST SAYIN'!

The only bad thing about custom graphics is it would be a complementary new style and who knows how long it would take to get all the spriters spriting in that style correctly for it all to work.  It isn't like adding just a few more weeks time we are talking months maybe even years we add for custom graphics.  I would love to use something like we had with ZFGC style, but sadly  :'( I am afraid that if we did the slowness of the graphic creation might kill the project.

You're right actually. I forgot there are usually more than one spriter in this kind of thing. (I'm so used to work where there's usually one or two graphic artists per project >_<)

well, it seems that the MC style is decided, I really doubt 10 people will vote for lttp style in the next few days rofl, right now we should also decide resolution, I would recommend staying with the old resolution 320 x 240, actually I would even keep the old screens we made:

Textbox (finished):

HUD
(http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e215/BlondApe/ZFGCCP/HUD3.png)
Titlescreen (needs design)

Registration screen
(http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/5974/questloganimatedql6.gif)

I beleive the Hud and registration screen are wip, both need some minor tweeks but when the time is right will get done.

Again thats up to the community to decide ;3!

Yeah, I actually like the style of those HUD elements quite a lot.

I personally really dig the graphical style. Good job. For the registration screen though, I'd make it something a bit more relevant to our project than mountains and clouds. Maybe a skyline of the city? I understand it's WIP, just thought I'd throw it out there.

Do we have the elements on the registration screen by themselves?

I could rip most of the graphics from the screen if the graphics are for the project

don't worry about the hud elements or how to rip them right now, ;3 better yet go to the threads and start commenting and suggesting ideas ;3! remember that it's your game too!

Don't actually have any ideas at the moment lol

Don't jump into graphics yet, that will come later.  Focus on game elements for now.  The artwork will build on that.

This is fine though, we have our decision on the style, so I'm gonna go ahead and lock this.
