Title: BlazeBigBang's sprite topic
Post by: BlazeBigBang on June 30, 2012, 11:58:00 pm
I suck at spriting, but I thought to give it a try, and post what I got here so people could help me to improve. I'll try to update it tomorrow. What I have 'till now is older Malon, and child Zelda.

Malon looks okay, but looks kinda squished, and Zelda is lacking contrast (i think) TERRIBLY D:

SOOOO MUCH WHITE!!!

Zelda's looking great, Blaze. There could be a little more contrast, or more shading on the huge area of purple on her head. But overall, it looks good, I'm impressed!

Malon, the side view particulately, is Shaped a bit weird. Her head changes shape and she extends to different lengths when she walks. If you don't get what I mean, stick the frames in a GIF file and look at it, she needs to be more consistent.

Ok, here's what I have now for Zelda and Malon. Also, I edited an Epona sprite, and right now I'm work on a Fierce Deity Link.

OoT Zelda! Looking great so far.  For Epona, that sprite looks more like a young Epona, so keep that in mind if you want to make the older horse.

What do you mean that is a younger Epona?

Young epona is from the part of OoT where you are young link.

Ok, then I'll work with Epona. Now, I FINALLY finishied editing Malon

Changing the subject, I'd like to ask you what do you think about this Crusader sprite I did. I need for a "homework", lets say.

I think Malon looks better.

The Crusader's halmate looks like a cone head, you should try rounding it out a bit more.

Well, finished with the Crusader (I think), and kept going with the sprites. Today I'll give you Adult Link, from OoT... at least what I have 'till now.

Her body's kind of out of scale with her head. Try using Link as a size reference (making sure he can fit on her back). There should also be more difference between old and young Epona. Here are some references: Old (http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100101224222/zelda/images/0/03/Epona_(Ocarina_of_Time).png), Young (http://www.zeldadungeon.net/Zelda05/Walkthrough/03/3_Epona13_Large.jpg). Notice the legs in particular, but also the neck-to-head proportions. Your old Epona also looks a bit fat, but that can be fixed by changing the body shape to a more curved one (you'll jhave room for that when you make the legs longer). Other than that, it's coming along well. Keep up the good work!
Title: Re: Sprites
Post by: BlazeBigBang on July 20, 2012, 08:43:27 pm
The Young one I find it perfect. Not because I did it, if not because is how the Minish Cap Epona was. Also, what I don't understand, you are saying to make her neck longer or shorter?
Title: Re: Sprites
Post by: . on July 20, 2012, 09:33:12 pm
You know what? Scratch the part about the neck. It's fine. There are problems, however, with the proportion of the body to the head. Your sprite of even old Epona has a head (+neck) as tall as the body and almost as wide. The head is really the right size. It's that the body needs to be bigger. Remember that she is supposed to be big enough for Link to ride her.

IMO, your older OoT Link doesn't look mature enough... not like he does in OoT.  Perhaps you need to use somebody else as a base for his face...

They look quite nice, but you should add more frames of animation for his walking cycle.
Bellow I added the sprites that people seem to miss when ripping.
Anyway hope that helped ;)
By the way, I really like your Zelda sprites.

It took a while to find but in terms of MC Epona more than a few years ago .TakaM had created some MC Epona animations. I saved them but I cannot remember which of them is a final version.

Credit goes to .TakaM and maybe some other people who edited his sprites at the time as per suggestion to include a stopping animation (I cannot remember back that far).

Looks like my topic got kind of forgoten, but I'm bringin new sprites. Sadly, I didn't have much time to finish Epona, but I asked Martin Dj for his Horn of Balance, and he told me that he needed idle animations for Link. I'm showing you this ones I made (note: this are modifications of MaJoRa's OoT Link sheet).

I would like to ask, for my game, which Link sprites are better for you: the Young Link from MC? Or my Old Link in MC style? Have in mind that the game will have Link as a mature boy. Here, some samples, and teh differences betweeen them.

EDIT: I'm making Link a boy of 13, 14 years old, and changing his colors, so, never mind about this. Thanks anyway, Malefor.

Edit: Never mind, this is a topic about sprites, so let's get back to that.

I was trying something new, and I got the idea of spriting Sahasrahla. I used the official artwork, instead of the sprite from LTTP. Though, I have two versions: the one for my project, and the one depicted on the artwork from LTTP.

LTTP

The official artwork depicted him with those colors. I was to choose between red and green. I'll give it a try later with green robes.

Now, to continue, I'm showing how I plan to make him move.

I'm planning to make him carry his staff that way when he's moving. But, I should ask, how do you prefer it, this way, or like the before sprites?

His robes a bit flat, and the shape of it looks like a cardboard triangle stuck to his front. You could look at the Wizzrobes for a better view the basic idea of how the bottom of robes in MC look like.

First of all, great work, my friend!  :) However, I put some of your images in Graphicsgale and I noticed quite a few tiling errors that you might want to fix.

In the first image, I see tiling errors with the floorboards, mat/rug, and the top left bookcase. Im not familiar with the game these tiles come from but I moved the top right bookcase to where I think it should be placed. I could be wrong about that though, but just throwing it out there...

(16x16) grid -
(http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/9328/16x16gridfloorboardsmat.png)

In the second image, I see tiling errors with the floorboards, table, water bucket and again, the bookcases?

(8 x 8 grid) -
(http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/3207/8x8gridfloorboardstable.png)

You will avoid all these tiling errors if you use something like graphicsgale to make maps/rooms/tiles.

Unfortunately, Paint doesnt have a grid :(
But when you download Graphicsgale, just let me know if you have any trouble using it, because it takes a little while to get the hang of it. You will soon find its just as simple as Microsoft Paint....actually, its MUCH easier and quicker to use if you want to make maps or tiles!
I will be happy to help.

Since I was bored, and I'm on holidays, I decided to return to the good ol' days of spriting. I did Magus from Chrono Trigger and Fierce Deity Link. As always, feedback is always welcome.

I made Link one pixel taller so it actually looked like the Fierce Deity.

And Magus is a custom sprite from Darklink's Gonzo sprite. It's still is a bit fat, and I need to make him a bit thinner. I'll work on that later.

Actually, Oni Link doesn't have a mouth, if that's what you're meaning by jaws. And Magus is everything except ok, he's too fat  :P. I must stop feeding that little devil.
