Right, I'm making a portfolio and thus want to have a really good website layout for it. So I'm pouring my !@#$% heart and immagination into this one. I want to know what you guys think, its not finished yet, there is still a fuckton of work to do on it. And the up-to-date version of it I cant upload just yet. I'm also making Kaede a portfolio much like this one, obviously there will be differences between them. But yeah, what do you think? Anything to add? The big grey box is for content...btw

looks pretty good, the only thing that i dont like is the red...but its just me. And what are you going to have in the right window? is it for your updates or are you going to have a completely different layout for all your content?
-
Looks nice I agree with tofuu though the red is a bit ouchness to the eye. Maybe a darker red or that red with some kind of design in a darker color on it to help break it up.

Thanks, I was thinking about the red colour being a bit...well, ugly. I may keep it over the Christmas Period as a little festivness, or just get rid of it now. And if your on about the Big Grey Box, thats for the content. There is a news box in the top left corner in the updated version.

Thanks, I'll have a play about with it and see what I can make. Maybe a glow coming in from bottom right? I dunno, I'll play about.
Blue?

That was your first suggestion, Windy. And I quite like it. Though I'm thinking of adding some shine to the content and News boxes.

yea the new layout looks great how you have it set up. the only compain is the content and news boxes look too flat..and even when you add thee actual content to it. So trying a similar effect like you did to the navigation section

Yeah, Like I said I was thinking of adding a lighting effect to it, to give it some shine. But thats not the only problem :(...this is.
http://www.binaryphoenix.com/hazard/bert/ In dreamweaver it looks fine, which means I cant problem solve it :@ help?
Also yeah I haven't updated that part yet with the new layout as I'm tyring to fix that before I do it.

Here are some general tips regarding a portfolio site, and they are views held by people in both the gaming and animation industries, as things like this were said by everyone that ever spoke at my uni and the events Ive attended.
- Have a nice clean layout
- Stay clear of fancy Flash intros/sites and such. If people have to wait an age before they can even judge your work, they probably wont bother
- Re: videos. Basically, use quicktime to encode - you can be guaranteed that a person can view it. Ok, they might have to install it, but its not some obscure codec that might not work.
The most important thing you need to remember, is that a portfolio is there to show off your work. Make it as easy as possible for the user to get to it; one click to a gallery instead of scrolling to the bottom of a page, or it being linked away behind other pages could make the difference of your work getting seen, or getting ignored. (seriously, people in the indusrtries are that harsh at times - they have to deal with too many applications and such to waste time on a badly designed site)
Onto more focussed comments.
I think you're limiting yourself far too much with the space allowed for your content, though I guess it depends what you're showing. More muted colours will definately work better, as I think you've realised. They distract the user less, and allow them to focus on the important stuff.
Everyone has different views naturally, but I hope some of what Ive said makes sense and can help in some way. Good luck with it.

Yuck Dreamweaver well that s the problem with that program it does things like this sometimes. This is why I hard code all my pages. Well I would guess that the button's are either the wrong size or have too much padding I would have too look at the code to tell you, but with it beng Dreamweaver generated code, it is only a maybe.

I've tried to go for a small layout as it can fit center to the screen with most resolutions and plus there easier to make :P. As for Flash elements I'm only gonna use them once (I'll explain later) mostly because I suck at flash, and would much rather have a HTML with photoshop created images as my layout.
As for videos, I was thinking of having them in 3 versions; .flv, .MPEG-4, .wmv/.avi (problem with avi is its not a standard codec, and wmv has a habit of shitty quality.) So if you dont have the Flash codec(flv) then watch the QuickTime one (MPEG-4) or Windows media ones (wmv/avi).
As for what I got too show on it? not much at the moment. Just wanna get this out the way and done.

It shouldn't be that hard tight butthole. I'll go through it and clear it up a little. If that dont work I'll rewrite the whole bit with my good friend notepad.
