Updates / ZFGC Game Jam '14 - NOW OPEN
« on: July 23, 2014, 10:26:47 pm »
Yes, that's right ZFGC!  We are hosting a motha' forkin' game jam!

For those unfamiliar with game jams, developers are given an allotted time to develop a game based around a very vague theme.  The theme can be worked in as a mechanic or as some other part of the game (an end goal for example).

Usually game jams only last the duration of a weekend, or a week at most.  However, we here at ZFGC are forkin' fantastic.  We're giving the whole month of August for entrants to dev dev dev!

THE THEME!!!!
And the theme of Game Jam '14 is....

GORONS!!!

Your game MUST be themed in some way, shape or form around gorons!  We don't care what it is, it could be about a goron picking flowers for all we care.  The only other requirement is a little twist we're adding.

The mystery sound effect!  Attached to this post is a dummy audio file.  This file MUST appear somewhere in your game.  Use it wherever you want.  As a menu selector, as an attack, whatever.  The fun part for everyone is that when we turn these games loose for everyone, we're going to replace that audio file with our mystery sound effect.  None of you are going to know what it is.  Are you going to end up making a cannon that makes cute little fairy sounds?  Or maybe your explosion sound effects are going to sound like Mario screaming as he falls to his death.  Whatever the case is, the provided dummy audio file needs to be references externally from the project so we can actually change it.  If you don't know how to do this, please let us know so we can help you.  And to be specific, this is a sound effect!  It is not music!

So a quick summary of the rules:

1) The theme of the game is gorons.
2) The game must include our provided dummy audio file (attached to this post)
3) Teams are allowed with a max of 2 people per team.
4) Whatever assets you use that you did not create, you must credit them.

For the first time in the history of ZFGC, WE ARE GIVING AWAY ACTUAL PRIZES THIS TIME.  THREE TO BE EXACT.

First place will get this guy!

Second place will get this thing!

And finally, third place will get a pack o' these things!

Games are also not expected to be a fully expansive game.  It can be a game about a goron pooping in a toilet for rupees for all we care.

SO GET ON THIS, ZFGC.  WE WANNA SEE SOME WACKY GAMES.

Hoooly crap is all I have to say.  I finally had the chance to see her perform last night and what a show it was!  I've never seen a concert like that before.  I always knew (as did we all) that she was lively and liked to move around a lot when she plays but I was not expecting what she pulled off!  If any of you ever have a chance to see her, regardless of whether or not you like that type of music, I'd highly suggest you take the chance!  You won't be disappointed!

Here's some video I took, got a lot more to upload.

Code / Just an FYI for any coders (Git issue)
« on: February 04, 2014, 04:09:12 am »
I know there isn't really anyone coding right now, but if anyone chooses to do so please check the following out:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20871549/error-when-push-commits-with-github-fatal-could-not-read-username

There is a bug in the most recent version of Git (1.8.5) that prevents https based pushes.  If you're running this version and need to push (for any repo, not just KoT), then you may need to roll back to 1.8.4

Overworld/Locations / [discussion]Deku Swamp Layout
« on: January 29, 2014, 01:08:13 am »
So, considering the order of things, this should be the next place we design.

Currently we have a few properties we know:
The swamp is poisoned like in Majora's Mask.
The Deku Palace is around somewhere
The Kokiri Forest entrance is somewhere around the Deku Palace (or in it?  I can't remember, need to check the doc)

So with that, I'm picturing a central swamp area with some waterways connecting some smaller areas to the central area.  Also lots of mushrooms and gross looking moldy stuff from the fungus outbreak.  Maybe the Deku Palace will sit in the central area or it can sit in one of these smaller locations.  I could also see this area being a small settlement of Deku citizens who don't live in the palace (the village mentioned on the wiki).  Regardless, it should be at the north, northwest border of the Swamp for access to the Kokiri Forest.

Alright, with the story arc complete, I think it's time to get the overworld in gear.  This is our current highest priority in the world design.  There are some things that need to be decided on right off the bat such as dimensions.  Also, how the map will be divided up.  Are we going to take the approach that MC took and break it into sections, or go with something more like lttp/lbw and make it one giant world?

We also need to keep certain dungeon orders in mind (the Goron Mines are immediately followed by the Valley of Death for example).

So, to start: The location of Hyrule Town.  Have we agreed on this at any point?  I can't remember.  In any case, I think it should be at either the center of the map or to the north.

Trying to figure out how to create a new type of info box for the header info (boss, mini-boss etc).  Otherwise, this is the template that should be followed.

EDIT: Info box added.

I just wanted to give a shout out to the community that the main story arc is finally complete!  Congrats to everyone who contributed!  This may have taken longer than we wanted, but it's a great milestone in the project none the less!

Management / Story Pass: Sixth Chapter
« on: November 04, 2013, 07:23:58 pm »
This is it! The last chapter before the epilogue! This chapter begins immediately after The Shiekah begin chasing Link.

So, Link is chased...through where?  I think it should start through the ruins of the fortress and then proceed through caverns within the mountains and through the Goron's territory.  Maybe as he's passing through, he can recruit Gorons on the way to slow the Shiekah down.  This could eventually lead to the Gorons blocking the Shiekah's path with some boulders, allowing Link to escape into Hyrule Field.

Updates / NCFC 2013!

http://www.nintendocfc.com/

Yup, it's official guys!  NFCF is back for 2013!  In 25 days, the booths will be open and there will be many games to be played!

NCFC, otherwise known as the Nintendo Community Fangame Convention, is an annual event where fangame communities come together to represent their talents and abilities through making Nintendo fan games. And just because ZFGC represents Zelda, ZFGCers aren't "required" to do Zelda games. The information from previous years are on their site.

Have at it, guys!

Audio / A little One-Winged Angel midi I whipped up
« on: July 29, 2013, 01:46:06 am »
Got some random inspiration a few weeks ago to do a One-Winged Angel guitar cover.  Sooo I pulled up Guitar pro and did some tabbin'!  This is what I came up with...I'm open to improvements wherever needed!  Midi attached!

I'm eventually going to record this with actual instruments.  The midi was tabbed with 2 electric guitars (one held distorted, another switching between a jazz and distorted effect) an acoustic guitar and a bass.  There's also some violin bow in there at one part (yes, I'm going to pretend to be Jimmy Page for about 10 seconds.) :P

Partially inspired by this !@#$%:

Management / Story Pass: Fifth Chapter
« on: July 14, 2013, 10:12:29 pm »
Here we are finally, the last challenge Link goes through before fighting his way through the Celestial Clock!  This part of the story focuses on the Sheikah and Gerudo, two rival races.  Here's what the Wiki says on the Sheikah:

Quote
Residing in a series of temples throughout the Valley of Death, they are the rivals of the Gerudo. Their elders reside in the highest parts of the the temples and are rarely seen on a normal basis. They have countless books and literature on the history of Hyrule and are the most knowledgeable about the world, magic, and combat. The elders are the only ones in all of Hyrule other than Ganondorf who are familiar with the ancient Hylian Language, far different from the modern dialect.

So we basically know at this point that the Sheikah and Gerudo are at each other's throats and the Sheikah kind of sort of know Link's quest isn't as heroic as he thinks it is.  Mayhaps we can do something like...Link goes to talk to the Sheikah to get their cog and they turn him down (reason being their knowledge of Link's quest and because they just can't get the !@#$% into their own temple because it's sealed with a raging beast inside.)  As a result, Link contacts Ganondorf by some magical means (we still haven't figured out how that's gonna work yet) to inform him who could say something along the lines of, "They wouldn't let someone of your skill have the cog? How insulting.  Seek out my people, they will give you the tools you need to overcome the Sheikah" effectively pitting the player against the Sheikah.  Then we could go off and get the Fire & Ice arrows from the Gerudo, who LOVE the idea of Link going after the Sheikah.  Link fights his way through the Sheikah to get to the elders, who eventually decide to allow Link into the temple.

This is what I've come up with for a premise. Has some holes and whatnot in it, and I'm not entirely sure what would convince the Sheikah to let Link into the temple all of a sudden.  Thoughts?

EDIT: Also, I can't remember what characters we've come up with and approved for this part.  I know we have Abigail so far.
