I started drawing a head for link, and when I slipped and noticed it looked strange I decided to build a whole body around it as pixel art (also a excuse to practice my shading)

Here is the result:

That has got to be the weirdest reply I've ever seen. Anywho, not too bad, but it lacks any real shading, to speak of, asides from the little bit of pillow-shading going on. Try looking at other pieces to see that the colors are usually used to make distinct forms and whatnot... and that green is a bit bright, lower the saturation. Asides from that, the base is pretty good. Keep it up.

Not bad? Sorry, but thats !@#$% horrible, you mixed pixel sizes, pillow shaded, and the face isn't even a distinguishable shape. And to add to it all it doesn't even look like link, try reading some tutorials.

I know the body sucks, I've never been able to do bodies and It was more of a after though when I'd done the head. And usually I suck at shading (you should see what Links head in Ruins Of Time looked like before I blurred it).

The head reminded me of this cartoon my little sister used to watch ages ago, about this really annoying kid who used to  show people his arse a lot, which is why I kept the head like it is. I tried to avoid pillow shading by only trying to make the darl and light colour seem like a 'light-source' determined it, guess it didn't work.

Try looking at some tutorials and examples first. Honestly, this "thing" is hideous. Be critic to yourself! And don't come with that "It's my first try" excuse. This really looks bad, and if you can't realise that yourself, you won't get any far with spriting/pixelling.

I've tried to change it a bit, improve the shading etc. But photobucket has screwed up the colours. Does anyone know of a better image host (one that doesn't screw up the colours)?

Also, this is what it would look like if I put it through the 'Ruins of Time' treatment:

I'm done some okay faces before (like these I used in Ruins Of Time after stretching and shrinking them in Pixia), but Bodies always look strange...I decided to make this face look strange too.

It's not Photobucket, it's you saving it as a .jpg.

NEVER EVER SAVE SPRITES AS A .JPG
ONLY USE .PNG OR .GIF.

I save it as a .png, Photobucket must be converting it...

EDIT: Okay...I selected .png but paint seems to be saving them as .bmp's...strange... I opened them in pixia and converted them to .png's and reuploaded them...it seems Photobucket converts bmp's to jpg's...

Yes, .bmps have big file sizes. Photobukect sets them to .jpgs when they're too big.

He did give constructive critism, if you look at his post. He said what it is lacking at...

That !@#$% sucks lollololololo
THAT is an unconstructive (and also pretty stupid O_o) thing to post.

I agree, this sadly isn't too good. Of course you can't be gifted, but you should improve a lot before you post your stuff here. You should always ask yourself "Do I like this, anyway?", as Gilga said. Good luck. :)

I recommend starting off editing existing sprites like the standard lttp link; Its a very simply coloured sprite; Try little things like adding horns, and flipping so that they are symmetrical, then say adding other little accessories etc.
I've not learned that way myself, but im sure if you studied existing sprites you would surely learn from them (Though dont post purely colour-edits), and then be more able to make customs.

Im kind of surprised by some of the insensitive replies in this topic. wow.

yea really, hl2world anybody?

anyway, like what was said above start out by editing lttp sprites, then work your way up.  Though I probably shouldn't be talking as the last thing I sprited was Gman...btw, anyone have that?  I can't seem to find it..

Aab, I definately don't recommend editting lttp or other simple sprites.  I have seen very little good come from them. Editting doesn't really help your skills that much, unless you edit a very detailed medium sized sprite(maybe some fighter sprites, or something like that)

There are some great tutorials here:
Go here, click tutorials
If its not in english click "English" in the menu at the top left

Try some of those, they may be of help to you.  And if you really want to get good you HAVE to practice.
1.Try by first getting am idea.
2.Pixel it roughly to get the basic shape(When doing lineart
3.Figure out a light source(Try using an offset light source(one coming from the left, or right, not in the middle.)
4.Put the light colors where the light would shine, then dark colors where the shadows would be.(When you pick you colors, try messing with saturation and hue to get a nice color, dont use a high saturation on anything)
5.Then add any details you forgot earlier.(get the colors count down as low as possible while still retaining the detail, like maybe one of your darkest shade of a color could fit in the place of another color but make sure it fits in.)
6.Post you results get some critique, and edit your pixel art accordingly.

Later after you get better and learn about colors and such, to AAing and Dithering(look for tutorials if you dont know what these are) and see if you can't get better results from that. Even try some hue shifting in your pixels(Sometimes you can use a color in the place of another color that will give you interesting results(like say a blue-ish color in the place of a green-ish color) Good luck with your pixeling ;)
