Well, an hour or so ago, I began my journey into Game Maker.  I have 6.1 Reg.
I bought Game Maker's Apprentice about in February, but I lost my disk and never really did anything with the book
except read it when I take a !@#$%.

So, I just dove in head first with no tutorials and started making a Gradius Clone...

You cannot die.  All it does is loops the timeline so enemies keep coming.  You can shoot with Control and destroy them.

Here is my version 0.01 results...

Dowload version 0.02
http://refgc.sitesled.com/Gradiusv002.gm6
New enemy type.  Collisions are a tad bit better.
EXE file.

Download version 0.01...
http://refgc.sitesled.com/Gradius.gm6
I do not know very much about Game Maker so is this required?
http://refgc.sitesled.com/Gradius.gb1

Well, how is that for an hours worth of figuring stuff without guides/help/tutorials?
Any suggestions or better ways to handle objects and such?

It would help me(Who doesn't have GM at all" if you could upload an EXE, screen looks nice tough, you did more then what I did at my first GM project(I followed a tutorial) =P

the gb1 is a backup of your project i think, and is not needed.

EDIT: As I joined the forum not long ago I'm a bit unsure, but isn't this the wrong place to post this?

That's good for someone who just started. =)
Some time ago a friend of mine downloaded GM (because he saw I could make games with it so he wanted to try to do his own games too), and his first "game" was something much more basic than that. :P

(offtopic) BTW:Are you still learning C++ or you intend to learn GML first?

EDIT: As I joined the forum not long ago I'm a bit unsure, but isn't this the wrong place to post this?
This isn't a project, this is more like a simple "game" he's done to see what he can do using GM. So it wouldn't be very good if he posted it in the project section.

Meh, I go back to C++ every few days or so...I got discouraged with it.  I wanted something fresh so I just decided to do GM.

Update!
Added new enemy type.  Bullet collisions are better.  Still cannot die.

I would still like to see an EXE version =/ Can't open Gm files =(

I learned GML before C++, and it made learning C++ a bit easier(Ofcourse, I had learned PHP before then again =P)

But again, really good for your first GM game from what I see... Usually pong or "Click the clown" is ones first game =P

Pretty good for your first game. I'm probably going to download the GM6 file later on today so I can take a peak at your programming.

Oh, and GB1 files are backups. If your GM6 file gets corrupted, just use the GB1.

Seeing as I never used GM before :)

Ok, I tried it, but two things bothered me:
1) When you fire rapidly, and hit an enemy, all the bullets currently fired will dissapear.
2) Whats with the "up" sprite?

Other than that, a good start.

1. I thought I fixed that...>.<...(Must just be fixed on my computer/Forgot to upload it>.<)
2.  That is the actual up sprite from Gradius.  I know the bullets don't come out in the right spot...
I do not know how to fix that.

How do I keep the window size at 320x240 but have a long level with a length of 2000+?
Everytime I try something the window gets as big as the level...
WHat do I need to do?

You can use views, but there are other ways to do that too.

(go to the room and click "views". Try to discover what can be done using them, they can be very useful).

Thankyou, good sir!

EDIT:How do I get an object to keeo it's position on screen...even when the view is moving?
So far, I've got an object that moves at a speed of 1 and the view is centered on that object and keeps the object from going within 160 pixels from the edge.  The screen moves to the right to compensate.  No problem.
But, the player's object is acting as every thing else now and moves "backwards"...The player would have to keep pressing forward to keep up with the screen.  How do I make it so the player's object doesn't move in the view unless the keys are pressed?
Do you know what I am saying? You know how in Gradius, the screen moves but your ship stays still and only moves when you push the d-pad...That's what I mean...
How would I go about doing that?I've tried H speed, but it is negated when  <no key> is pressed>.<...

Okay, I fixed the problem above by having horizontal speed when no key is pressed.
I added horizontal speed to when up is pressed and when down is pressed.
I increased right movement by 1 to compensate and decreased left movement by 1 to compensate...
Is that a bad way of making the object stay in the view?
I have not uploaded it yet, because I do not think you guys want a play-by-play of everything I accomplish.

No, it's perfectly okay.
That's how dealing with views is done (or at least it's the way I do :P)
Don't forget to change the movement of the enemies too.

EDIT:About the object moving to change the view: It's okay to use that, but there is a way to make the view move without having to have an extra object - you can use this code in the step event of an object:
Code: [Select]
view_xview[0]+=1;
