Other Projects / TANK TACTICS is Finished! I did the thing!
« on: April 03, 2022, 01:02:00 am »

Hey everyone! I did the thing! My team and I finished making a game after 10 plus years of messing around with the concept. Thought I would post here since I used to be a fairly active member here and even talked about this project who knows how long ago.

About the Game:
Tank Tactics is classic arcade throw back as a top down action shooter puzzler. You are the hero in a world overrun by the ATTF (Autonomous Tank Tactical Force) which has "Almost" completely erased human society. Little do these robotic overlords know in a secret human base was developed a powerful new human controlled prototype tank capable of fusing any two weapons together to create overpowering combinations! Save the world with you and a friend to free humanity with your skill, quick thinking, and smart calculations of trajectories because... Bullets bounce!

Features:
Single/Local-Multiplayer Campaign
Arcade Mode
Battle Mode
In Game Store (None IAP)
Loads of Unlockable Content
Achievements
Prologue / Epilogue Story
Semi-None Linear (Pick Your Path Through Each Area)
Complete Level Editor (Used By Our Team to Design the Game)
Customize Keyboard/Mouse Controls
Great Classic Graphics+ (turn on shock waves for a neat effect!)
Xbox Controller Support
PS4 Controller Support

About the Development:
Tank Tactics started out on the GMC forums in the late 2000's back in the GM7 & 8 days when I was learning to make games as a hobbyist. I also came here to ZFGC to learn and share knowledge about game maker and this community was a perfect place for learning back then! Tank Tactics has evolved and developed immensely over the years until now it has a full coop campaign, battle mode, an in game store, and a complete level editor all finally ready for release on the windows platform with STEAM. Something I always wanted to finish, but life kept getting in the way... Until Now! I can happily say Tank Tactics is ready for release. I hope you all enjoy playing it as much as I and my team enjoyed making it!

Feedback:

Do you enjoy Tank Tactics, want to give constructive feedback, or just talk about the game? Please rate and leave feedback & reviews on STEAM, or talk about it here as well! We would love to hear what you have to say! You can also reach us at aerogames.sup@gmail.com but there are only a few of us so please be patient if we don't get back right away but we will try! I hope we will hear from you one way or another! Thank you!

Discussion / Lines of Code
« on: March 18, 2017, 03:56:18 pm »
So I have been working on my game Tank Tactics for a long time. Out of curiosity I downloaded a

"Line of Code" calculator: https://forum.yoyogames.com/index.php?threads/lines-of-code-counter.3307/

Here are my results

Quote
Rooms:
   Lines: 15548
   Empty lines: 2491
   Characters: 270917

Shaders:
   Lines: 90
   Empty lines: 15
   Characters: 2007

Objects:
   Lines: 71793
   Empty lines: 4802
   Characters: 1897633

Scripts:
   Lines: 7003
   Empty lines: 703
   Characters: 200936

Total:
   Lines: 94434
   Empty lines: 8011
   Lines (excluding empty lines): 86423
Empty lines ratio (empty lines/lines): 0.08
   Characters: 2371493
   Characters per line: 25.11
Characters per line (excluding empty lines): 27.44

I found this to be quite high. Some of those lines are comments I believe... At least I'm not sure if the calculator takes them out or not. But I have apparently made a game with more characters than many novels. Keeping in mind this project has spanned about 4-5 years of development.

I was curious how many lines of code you guys typically have in your projects?

Entertainment / AM2R is Amazing!
« on: August 19, 2016, 05:08:44 pm »
I haven't been on these forums much recently, but I didn't see any post here about project AM2R. So for those who may not have heard the full release of the Metroid 2 remake is out and it is really good! It is well worth your time if you like Metroid. The AM2R team did a fantastic job. It is every bit good enough to have been made by the big N themselves. Congrats to them on finishing a fan-game in such a spectacular way!

The AM2R site is http://metroid2remake.blogspot.com/

Other Projects / AeroGames Presents: Tank Tactics [DEMO]
« on: March 08, 2015, 11:46:41 pm »

Hi guys. I have been a member here for a long time and have made many games that some of you may remember such as Smash Bros ZFGC. Over the years you have heard me mention my new game Tank Tactics that I have been working on. It has been a really long road considering I am working full time and am only programming on the side (as the sole programmer for the game), but we have now released a demo in a greenlight campaign for Steam. I would really appreciate it if you would take a minute to look at it on steam and up vote it and perhaps pass the demo around. Thanks! You guys have been a great resource for questions and answers over the years so thanks again! XD

About Tank Tactics
Tank Tactics is designed to be a fast paced, arcade style shooter requiring high levels of dexterity, critical thinking, and a love of blowing the smithereens out of everything! It features multiple play modes, difficulty settings, and interesting game elements like gravity wells and teleports. And of course... The ability to combine any two weapons you find into bigger badder enemy splattering rounds of ammunition! Tank Tactics also contains both elements of high density action and mind bending puzzles.

Unlike other tank games you might have played the AI, on the more difficult play settings, can be extremely challenging as the enemy CPU will actively look for ways to blow the tracks off of your tank by calculating bullet trajectories around corners and actively dodging and shooting down bullets you fire at them. You must out think and outplay the enemy in order to take the victory! Do you have what it takes to save this future syfy appocolyptic world from the ravages of these tank tactical overlords?

System Requirements:
* Decent Windows PC running Windows 7 or newer: Specs are in the process of being determined so please feel free to post your specs and game play experience here!
*We will be releasing Tank Tactics on multiple platforms, but since we are currently working to get the game on steam we are focusing on our PC build

and feel free to check our greenlight campaign on steam and vote for the game!
and feel free to check our indiegogo campaign on indiegogo and support its development!

I would love to hear about your experience playing the Tank Tactics demo so please feel free to comment and share your thoughts!

Graphics / Small graphics Request
« on: March 06, 2015, 12:36:12 am »
So years ago SinkinDevil made me this awesome logo that I could use for my games. I really like how it looks, but now that I am trying to make more professional games it might be nice to have in a higher resolution version with perhaps a little more detail. I have yet to actually release my first game so I have no moneys, but I would love to put someones name in my list of special thanks if there was somebody who would be interested in helping me out.

Here is the original (Credit to SinkinDevil)

I really like the color scheme and overall look of this. So sticking close to this basic idea and color scheme is good

I would perhaps like to see deeper reds and gold and perhaps a wider gradiant. Perhaps slightly shiny, but also old looking, and perhaps metallic. My plan is to have the words fall in from the top of the screen and stop at the middle of the screen with a thud like they are pretty heavy, but I will animate all that myself. I just need the basic image.

I am trying to develop with retina resolution with a screen that is 2048x1536. The Logo should fit nicely in the center of such a screen.

Anyhow. I would be very thankful if someone felt so inclined as to help me out. If you have any questions or would like further clarification, please ask.

edit: Not sure if SinkinDevil is active around here anymore or not, but if you are. Thanks.

Entertainment / Netflix Developing Live Action Zelda Series
« on: February 07, 2015, 08:47:40 pm »
So maybe some of you here have heard? Apparently Netflix is teaming up with Nintendo to make a live action series following the boy in a green tunic. Sounds like it is still a long ways out. What are your thoughts? If it had great writers it might just have a chance, but at the same time I just can't imagine a spin attack ever being cool in a live action series.

I am kind of excited for the thought as long as it is really done with care. It would be very easy to mess it up. Animation would seem a better choice, but maybe it doesn't have to be. Also... Link never says anything in his games other than grunts yells and sighs. Anybody else think it is interesting that Link would finally have a voice?

Also... I think that they will have to go with a somewhat more realistic atmosphere if they are going to pull it off.

Here is an IGN link for your review.

Entertainment / Startrek: Into Darkness *Spoilers*

In case you missed it in the subject line this post contains spoilers so I'll put in another spoiler tag.

So I went to see the new star trek movie the other day and I was quite impressed. The original star treks are quite before my time, but I have since gone back to re watch them so I am familiar with the star trek universe including the original series. This new star trek had quite a few tie ins to the original which I found to be really interesting. For instance the tribble scene tied in with the original series and of course the whole part about Kirk dieing the save the crew being an exact mirror of Spock's experience. Some people complain that it was a lame ripoff and un-original while I would contend that in fact it was nothing of the sort. Considering that this show traverses an alternate timeline it was interesting to me to see how Kirk would have indeed been willing to sacrifice his life in much the same way Spock was. To me it makes sense and I found it to be an extremely enjoyable show. Perhaps even better the first one in this timeline. I must say that I have enjoyed Zachary Quinnto's interpretation of Spock as well... Anyway... Agree, Disagree, or agree to disagree?

So I have noticed over the last little while that many of my projects have been removed from the database for some reason. First my Smash Bros game, and then my Mario & Luigi game, and my Warcraft fan game, and also my LOZ Shattered Dimensions game, and even some tutorials that I uploaded. Are they all just falling through the cracks as the site is being updated or does Star just hate all my projects >:D

No really though... Some of them are quite old, but some of them I still work on when I have the spare time so it would be nice if they were still here for me to update when I felt like it, or had reason to. All my old topics are still here, but the download pages aren't...

Anybody else have this problem?

Edit: So after looking into it further... Every single one of my projects have been removed... The only thing I could find with my name on it was an old Fog of War tutorial that never really worked because of a site bug that didn't actually let me upload the file correctly... It must be a conspiracy.

Entertainment / DKC Returns
« on: May 15, 2013, 03:18:26 am »
Okay. So I am very often behind the curve when it comes to trying new games. I just finished playing through Donkey Kong Country Returns and I was thoroughly impressed the whole game through. Very unique and interesting levels, good humor, and very challenging! All things I like in a game. Finally a sequel to a game that is even better that the original (And the original was really good so that is saying something for me!)

All in all, I would defiantly recommend it to anybody who enjoys a good challenge in a platformer. I really hope to see more of this quality in the future for Donkey Kong because this one was gold!

I saw that the title will be coming to the 3DS. I am assuming that it is just a port, but even then it was good enough I would definitely consider getting it. Hats off to Retro Studios on this one.

Audio / I am Looking for Final Fantasy 6 Sound Effects
« on: July 29, 2012, 09:34:36 pm »
I am currently working on a FF6 fan game and I am in need of the sound effects. I need them all, but most emediatly I need all the menu sound effects as that is what I am working on currently. If anybody has these, or knows where to get them I would really appreciate it. I primarily use .wav for sound effects, but I would be willing to look at whatever you might have. Thanks again!

edit: I read the forum rules and I am a little confused... Is it not okay to ask for sound effects from existing games if it is for fan game purposes?

Feedback / 1000 Users here we come!
« on: July 03, 2012, 03:53:39 pm »
So as others may have noticed we are coming up on the big 1000 for the number of registered users here at ZFGC. Although a small percentage of those users are actually active I think it might be cool to present the 1000th registered user with a specialized banner signifying it. So why am I bringing this up now when there is still over 80 or so users to register before reaching 1000? Well I thought it might be cool to have people submit multiple banners and then we will vote on the best banner to be presented to our 1000th registered user. Starting the process now gives us a little time to get it sorted out. So... what do you all think?

Characters / Marrel
« on: May 24, 2012, 05:30:24 pm »
//Since we can submit two entries now, I thought... Why not. Again... Drawing is not my forte, but you get the idea at least.

Twitch... Twitch twitch... Marrel's large bushy eyebrows were beginning to reveal his suppressed inner rage as they danced about his leathery face. Attempting to maintain his composure Marrel set down his hot cup of morning tea and took a deep breath allowing the memories of his past to flow in. In the eye of his mind he could see his grandson's face smiling up at him. "Its just a piece of toast." the boy laughed. The face faded from his memory as the thought of his physician shaking his wrinkly brown finger at his nose came to mind. "Don't even think of it!" His physician exclaimed. You are just too old to be blasting things to bits on your ridicules whims... Never again I tell you, or you"ll be sorry!"
Marrel was glad when that stupid face fell back into the depths of his memory and out of sight. "What does he know... Old fool he says... Too old he says" Marrel looked down at his hands and took another deep breath. His long mustache waved under the influence of the warm stream of his breath... "I'm not that old anyway..." Marrel looked down at his piece of toast sitting on his plate and cringed as his head twitched to the side. Struggling to maintain his composure Marrel picked up the toast and took a bite out of the corner, but he just couldn't handle it anymore. "I hate cold toast!" Marrel mumbled under his breath. He could feel the raging power of his youth crying to be freed. All it would take is just a little blast! Marrel tossed the cold toast across the room catching it in the firm grasp of his mind. "Lightly browned is all" he said as a smile began to reveal itself under his thick facial hair. Then before a blink of an eye he hurled a large burning ball of blue flames at the helplessly cold piece of toast, and just like that the cold was gone... but so was the toast. Marrel looked down at the small mound of black charcoal under the position at which the toast had once peacefully floated. "Hm... A little over done I am afraid..." Marrel turned back to his small cup of warm tea laughing. "better not go cold on me too, or you"ll be next."

----------------------------------

A retired wizard, the only thing Marrel hates more than cold toast is the prospect of getting old. Whats the point of all that power when you are getting too old to enjoy it.

Characters / Darius [New Content]
« on: May 11, 2012, 03:58:43 pm »
It seemed as though a distant voice whispered through the long branches of a nearby willow tree as if echoing the forgotten memories of the times since past. “It is time.” A voice rolled through the dangling vines of the tree.

“What was that?” Darius thought to himself as he sat up rubbing his eyes. Suddenly the sting of a thousand needles crept down his right arm. That mind numbing pain that arose all too often. Slowly the feeling began to return as he rubbed his arm. He could feel the defined scar which ran the length of his muscular forearm. An old battle wound, this scar seemed to remain as a constant reminder of his past which he so desperately tried to forget.

“I must have been dreaming.” Darius thought to himself resting a leg on a fallen stump nearby. The emerald green vines of the willow, glistening in the morning dew, danced about his head with the calm but steady breeze.

“I must have fallen asleep” He said to himself squinting as beams of light began creeping over the tops of the Daleema mountains to the east.
There had always been a pleasant air about the Great Willow tree and Darius always loved to rest in its shadows, but it had been nearly 20 years since he had last seen it. As a kid Darius always loved visiting the willow trees with his mother where she would often read stories to him of the Ancients from beyond the borders of the Great Northern Region.

Darius rubbed his eyes again in an effort to further awaken himself. As he looked out across the early morning horizon, he found his mind beginning to wander back to the time when he was first stationed at the gate some 22 years ago. A young man at that time, he would have never guessed what the future held in store for him. He had indeed experience many great and terrible things since those days, yet little at the gate itself seemed to have changed from the time when he first held watch there as a new recruit to the “Iron Army Core” division so many years ago.

“Not much has changed” Darius thought to himself while standing to stretch his back. The cool morning breeze gently whistled as it caressed the cracks imbedded in the ancient stone wall which surrounded the Great Northern Region.

The gate way stood amidst the wall that surrounded this Northern Region, and was constructed of large aged stones, which were hewn from the heart of the Deleema mountains long before the War of the Ancients spoken of in the old legends. These massive stones stood taller than any man that Darius had ever seen, were deep red in color, and most had been there so long that lush green vines had begun to encapsulate them. The gate itself was nothing more than a crack in one of the stones large enough for no more than a man to walk through, and looked to be just as old as the rest of the stones, but strangely, no vines grew in or around it.

Darius looked down each of the beaten paths that followed alongside the Great Wall hoping to see the next member of the Gateway Keepers as they were to fill his position at sun rise. He saw only empty trails.

The sun was now coming into full view over the Daleema Mountains, striking the cold morning air of its curse. Darius unbuttoned his jacket as the thought of the voice he had heard rushed through his mind.

“Where did that voice come from?” Darius kicked a small rock which had rested at the toe of his boot. Striking and rolling through the opening of the Great Wall. “And what is it time for?” He thought to himself.

--------------------------------------

A rogue of sorts, Darius has been a member of the Iron Army Core since his youth. His past has been one made bloody of necessity. Sworn to protect the people upon his admittance into the Iron Army Core he adheres strictly to the Army Core Values.

     Courage
   HOnor
     Respect
StrEngth

After having lost his family to bandits as a youth, Darius devoted his life to protecting others from similar fates.

edit: I've never done this before so I thought I would give it a go... Unfortunately I am not much of an artist...

Feedback / Ugh... Yuck... The Tutorial System is bugging me out!
« on: May 06, 2012, 11:09:54 pm »
So I have been trying to upload a tutorial and have been having a difficult time... First of all the file I uploaded as the preview is not what is showing up for my tutorial and secondly I cannot see where the option to download my tutorial is... Am I missing something? Apparently it uploaded 3 times even though it gave me an error and said it couldn't upload... And it doesn't seem to think I have permission to deleat my own resource...

See my tutorial here: http://zfgc.com/index.php/resources/items/view/451

I just happened to notice that in our new resources set up some of the tutorials I had uploaded are no longer with us. Not that it really matters, they were just some simple methods for custom key mapping and a fog of war system that I have since found a better solution for, but I was curious where they went non the less. I have been under the impression that it was [madrassauce] that stole them, but I could be wrong...

Entertainment / Skyward Sword VS Twilight Princess
« on: January 31, 2012, 04:23:46 pm »
Awhile ago there was a topic her about Skyward Sword and it seemed that a lot of people really liked it and didn't like Twilight Princess ... So I may be opening a can of worms here, but so far I am kinda disappointed in SS. Granted I am only at the 3rd dungeon and am still playing it so don't go giving everything away on me. Anyway. There are a number of reasons I liked TP better than SS so far.

Twilight Princess
-Extremely involving environment/graphics
-did I mention awesome graphics
-Creative game elements including snowboarding, escorting the carriage, horse back battles
-You could skip text
-Perfect Musical Score
-Awesome level design. I loved every level!
-Humorous
-Your guide (Midna) was cool and most of the time not annoying.
-Small text when you are too far away to listen in on someones conversation.
-The game was too easy though...
-I could go on and on.

Skyward Sword
-I liked being able to run... But a stamina bar... Ugh!
-Cartoony graphics... Ugh!
-A very annoying guide (I forgot her name) that prances around at the end of levels and gives you hints you don't even want and can't skip!!!
-The guides voice is also annoying and hard to hear past when trying to read her annoying hints!
-Short/less creative levels... at least what I have found so far.
-Way too easy!
-The one really cool feature is the motion control. Attacking enemies is fun and each enemy is more of a threat than in TP. I is funny to see them role down hills and fall off of tight ropes as well.
-I do find the shop back at your hometown humorous... Thats a good thing too.
-Feels more restricted to me than TP did. The path ahead of you is pretty linear. so far
-I like all the items/bugs you can catch
-The sky theme... when you are flying. Sounds just like Super Mario Galaxy... Just doesn't fit...
-You can't skip text!!! Ugh!!!
-I can't think of anything else right now... but you get the point

Anyway. I am not saying that SS isn't worth playing because it has some good features and I plan to finish it, but it just seems like a letdown after TP to me. Come on... The western villige in TP was classic! I was laughing and enjoying the game the whole way through with TP, and I was sad when it was over... But the same can not be said for SS in my opinion... So... How about you guys?

Legend of Zelda Shattered Dimensions - Legend of Zelda Shattered Dimensions
Here you will find an engine demo for the main portion of the physics of my game. Also the menu and many of the items are functional. There is currently no story line or levels in this demo, but I am hopeing to start putting it together before too long. It has been a long time comming, but I am quite happy with the results of my efforts thus far. With the up and comming NCFC I have been inspired to push harder to add more content as I would like to enter this year, but as of yet I am not sure if I will be able to.

Currently Functional and Selectable Items:
-Slingshot
-Bombs
-Bow and Arrows
-Boomerang
-Roc's Feather
-Clawshot
-Iron Boots
-Lens of Truth

I have finished a couple more items such as the hover boots, and upgraded equipment, but it was not practical to include them in this engine demo so you will just have to imagin how they work for now... Which brings us to the notable features this demo has to offer.

Notable features
-Link has some special evasive shield manuvers
-Link can pick up rocks/bushes/ect.
-Pits/Holes are complete
-Cliff Jumping is complete
-Quarter based heart system is complete
-Unique terrain sounds depending on what Link is walking on
-Rolling is complete
-And of course the spin attack
-And More!

Controls
Movement - A,S,D,W
Sword - J
Action - K
Shield - L
C1 - U
C2 - I
C3 - O

Now if you don't like these keys very much don't worry about it too much. While the keys are not currently selectable by the player I have in the works the ability to customize the keys, but that will come at a later date.

As always I appreciate your feedback so please feel free to leave comments/critiques/compliments and/or brownies for me to enjoy. Thanks again for your time. - Basic physics and menu engine
0 - Most of the physics and items are coded and functional, however there is yet little story coded.
- A resonable PC

Audio / [Request] Make my song a midi... or something
« on: December 24, 2011, 05:52:50 pm »
Hi guys! I have been a member here making games with game maker for quite some time now. I have always just made games for the fun of it, but recently I heard that YoYo games is going to start publishing some of the better games submitted to them... And so I began making a project I hope they will accept for publishing. In the past I have always just used midis or songs from other games, but for obvious reasons I can not do that for this project. So for the last week or so I have been sitting down at the piano trying to figure a good song for a boss battle. Though it is only about a minute and a half long
I have finally come up with something I think is pretty good... enter my dilemma... I actually don't know how to read music... or how to make midi files or any type of music file for that matter. All I can do is sit at the piano and pluck keys until something sounds good. So now I have a song I can play on the piano, but no way to put it into my game. So I was hoping someone here on the site might be willing to listen to my microphone recording of the song and make a music file out of it. There is some complication though... Try as I may I cannot play the song through without mistakes. So there are some pauses and wrong notes. I think it will be pretty obvious what I meant to play when you listen to it.
Anyway. I could really use the help. I would be happy to list those who help as audio editors or whatever seems to be most applicable in the credits of the game... and who knows... You might find your name in an ipod app if YoYo accepts my game... I intend to keep on working on it until they do so that could be a pretty high chance! I am trusting you guys not to steal the song as your own though! Thanks for your time!

Also... Even if you can't help making the music file feel free to listen to it and give feedback! It is intended to be a boss battle theme. Thanks!
