GM will not work on any Linux distribution, it relies on DirectX, which is a proprietary software by Window$.
Wine...
Wine has it's limits.
It *can* do DirectX, and it's constantly getting better.

I concur. It's getting bloody brilliant. Also, doesn't this imply that the development of Wine will become a lot easier soon?
That's good to hear.

Discussion / Re: Which Language; C++ or C#?
« on: October 25, 2007, 05:55:58 pm »
Depends what you need it for really. C++ is brilliant for low level access but it does have a horribly obtuse and bloated syntax, mainly due to the fact that its essentially just C with a crude for of OOP slapped on. C# is higher level (though it does permit low-level code) and far easier to use and be productive with, its OOP interface is also far more cleaned up than C++'s. However that said as people have noted, it is propriatary and as such cross-compatiblity is an issue with it, if however your only after Windows development then its not a huge problem.

My one complaint is the lack of pointers without having to declare code as unsafe. I'm aware that they are ways around using pointers, but sometimes * is just sooo much easier
You must be doing some pretty wierd stuff to find it easier to use pointers.
You should NEVER be only after Windows development. I think Mono is cross-platform, but I'm not sure.

A simple image editing program does not redeem Windows from the !@#$% hole it dug it's self into.

They should have stuck with XP, Vista is going to be the end of them.
He just wants a decent alternative. I might even make one someday (can't be that hard?).

Which one should I learn?  I have books lying around for both, and I really need to commit myself to one or the other.

Which one is more powerful, and which one is more limited?  I just don't know !@#$% about these things.

If you are just going to tell me not to use a certain language because it's "proprietary blah blah blah", please stay out.

C# (C Sharp) is built to work with the .NET framework. It can essentially be used for anything: standalone programs, DLLs, and web pages (ASP.NET). It's a higher level language, and is a totally different beast than C++.

Then again, this is coming from skimming a few pages of The C# Bible, so meh.
I would completely avoid using it unless you're using Mono.

Yeah, i know not too original title, but hey, i was like 14 when i put it originally:p, well i guess ill try and slowly bring it back to its former self, give me some time though

i have screens and such, its just been awhile since i last used GM

but from what i remember

storyline takes place shortly after MM
Link returns from termina..ocasionally visits termina....all seems well..until one day ganondorf somehow breaks free...and seals the door between the 2 world....leaving link in termina to rot...and him to take his once rightful, throne....youve got to find a way to break the seal, and then break the evil king, lol

Sounds like nothing special.

C# is bloated and the most common implementation is proprietary.

C# does some things like Java, while C++ can access the low-level stuff.

...dammit he's insulting himself with his avatar and personal text!
WE CAN'T HARM HIM!

In my own words: A persons choice to create proprietary, and a persons choice to use it.

After all, do you think a less-computer-savvy person knows how to even find Open Source/'Free' software that is good enough and easy enough to use? Proprietary helps out those that don't know how to help themselves :P Remove it, and odds are a lot of PC users would get really confused and disappear XD
Me or HB?

You have to tell them. XD

Oh to wish upon a star,
Doesn't matter who you are,
I wish I could punch through the internet,
To shut some bitches up.
[Clearly doesn't know the song at all]

I'm sorry, but did you ever think that...I dunno, nobody gives a !@#$%!

Sorry, but every time something like this comes up, at least Dehvknull always comes in arse-talking like mad. Can someone please do something about it to shut them up? This forum is based around Game Maker for the love of God! How can you come here and not expect just about everything to be proprietary software? I swear, you just come here to !@#$% about it! Why not make your own forum just for non-proprietary software, and put all your rants there!

And Microsoft a small market? Yes, the most commonly used Operating System in homes is certainly a small Market <_<

I bolded everything I wanted to just type in Caps Lock...

Now, to end this:

[/end rant]

My patience is always very thin, it's been worn out now.

Anyway, the program runs fine for me too :P
I should send the Red Army after you... >_>

Java.

Bear in mind that Java is a proprietary (non-free) language. It also requires a Java Virtual Machine being available for the system to allow it to run.
Actually it was released under the GPL. I still would avoid it though.

I recommend Python.

Nobody in this topic has any taste in music whatsoever. To top it off, I'm seeing a lot of "geek anti-conformist just cuz".
"Emo !@#$%" doesn't suck, it just doesn't appeal to you.
I'd cough for comical effect, but you seem to be missing a lot of stuff that you typed yourself, so here it is, sans cough: "hypocrite"
Hahaha that proves how much you phail.
Once again we've been graced with Regulus's pseudo-intelligent self.
yeah well !@#$% you ass.
Oh god, here comes Limey...

Not in the least. Read what I'm saying instead of reading what you want me to say. k?

It does suck. They're a bunch of !@#$%/wannabe cabaret singers who have no musical talent and horrible names/titles/lyrics.

As we all know, music is totally measured by the band's name, the titles of the song, and the song's lyrics. Matchbox Twenty's a good example of a band that has crap lyrics but good music.

Who's you? Your pronoun doesn't match up to a noun.
That is along with the terrible music. Lyrics definitely can make a song better.

Nu-rock/metal doesn't peak, it valleys. Whatever the "emo !@#$%" is, it still sucks.

Metal peaked in the 80's. There's never going to be another Iron Maiden or Metallica ever again. There hasn't been anything close to the big 80's metal bands.

"Emo !@#$%" doesn't suck, it just doesn't appeal to you.

Science these days seems to be very much a religion. People cling to it as it is the most comfortable thing to put your faith in.
It's the only thing that makes sense to "put your faith in". Science by itself cannot be clung to, but individual ideas can, which has the possibility to be like a religion.

XD They're not that new.
Damn, now my list of good newer bands is even more painfully short. >_<

I tried downloading it yesterday, but Firefox screwed up. I'm going to try again now.
