In my opinion 'that third one' is usually better. What do you think?

Always the Original.. Normally sequals are flops.. though in recent years they've been significantly better.

Sort of like when you go from a book to a movie.. it normally doesn't work too well.. (Cite the difficulty with actually turning Ender's Game into a movie..)

I agree sequels aren't usually as good. But in terms of video games (at least old-school Nintendo), there was a clear pattern. Good original game. Bad sequel. Better third game.

Legend of Zelda: Good original game
Adventure of Link: Bad sequels
Link to the Past: Better third game

Metroid: Good original game
Metroid II: Bad sequel
Super Metroid: Better third game

Super Mario Bros.: Good original game
Super Mario Bros. 2: Bad sequel
Super Mario Bros. 3: Better third game

That's just the ones off the top of my head. ;)

A New Hope > The Empire Strikes Back > Return of the Jedi

The first was best.

---

Manhunter < Silence of the Lambs < Hannibal < Red Dragon < Hannibal Rising

Every movie got !@#$% better.

---

I can't think of any more examples.  But my point is, it always depends on what you're talking about.

That's also true, but at least we know that usually the first sequel isn't very good.

Raiders of the Lost Ark > Temple of Doom < Last Crusade > Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Ultimate Force Season 1 = Ultimate Force Season 2 > Ultimate Force Season 3 = Ultimate Force Season 4

Pitch Black < Chronicles of Riddick...

Raiders of the Lost Ark > Temple of Doom < Last Crusade > Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

To simplify this
Last Crusade > Raiders of the Lost Ark > Temple of Doom > Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

The first and third are the best, followed very closely by Temple of Doom. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is so far behind it boggles the mind how something so !@#$% could exist...I suspect, like all things in life, it needs more Sean Connery.

3rd was best in the whole series.

Original: Hey, we got a good thing going here!

Sequel: We're going to try to change things up to make it fresh and exciting, creating a horrible abomination that nobody wanted.

Third installment: So we realized that we !@#$% up with the sequel, so we're going to return to the principles that made the original great in order to provide an entertaining and worthwhile experience.

Manhunter < Silence of the Lambs < Hannibal < Red Dragon < Hannibal Rising

I'm afraid I disagree. Silence of the Lambs is superior to all other Hannibal movies.

…It's superior to your face.

But yeah, in my opinion they get progressively better.  They are all awesome though (except Manhunter).

Paper Mario = Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door = Super Paper Mario (IMO)

More like... Paper Mario > Super Paper Mario > The Thousand-Year Door

Also... Mario Party 1 is the exact same thing as Mario Party 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. They suck equally bad.

Personally, I enjoy some "sloppy seconds"!

Resident Evil 2>Resident Evil 1 = Resident Evil 3>Resident Evil 4 > = all other RE games > Resident Evil Gaiden = poop

Also, AoL was not a shitty game like everyone thinks.  I thought it was horrible back when I was a kid the first time I played it.  But when I play it again and again, I love it more each time as I try to find uber fast ways to level up and find !@#$% before your supposed to and what not.

Also, alot of people would argue that the sequels blow as in the Lord of the Rings movies.
I personally still like the first one most.  But most people I know, enjoyed Two Towers the most. :/

The Mario Party games on N64 were the best and the rest are worse except maybe Mario Party DS so I've heard. TTYD was an awesome game. I find all three of those games in the same league, they're all awesome equally.

Oh wow, I was the only one who said sequels were the best O_o.

I've always enjoyed a good sequel. Normally, I can understand that they're never quite as well-designed as the original, but I always seem to enjoy them more. A couple of my favourite sequels are listed as follows...

Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest. A lot of people, and I mean a lot of people, put a lot of !@#$% on this movie. In my eyes, it was more adventurous than the first, and far more enjoyable.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Sure, it's the sixth game, but also the sequel to OoT. And the sequel to Ocarina of Time could not have been better. Darker, scarier, more meaningful, and completely off-track. It's what the series needed.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. My favourite in the Harry Potter series. Where the later books seem to focus on just the works of Voldemort and Harry's efforts to stop him, the second book (and the third) expanded on what the first started; which was opening and exploring this new fantasy world, in a similar way, but also differently. The introduction of the Basilisk, Tom Riddle, Ginny Weasley, Gilderoy Lockhart and the Polyjuice Potion created a really excellent adventure of new discoveries, and a couple of murders along the way.
The Matrix Reloaded. The original was fantastic, but the sequel was an excellent dose of action. The street scene with the billions of Agent Smiths come to mind, and the highway chase was also downright awesome. This film really showed off what Neo and The Matrix world was all about, right before a sloppy "third one."
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. My respect for Modrill dropped when he placed this game as worst in the series. It is undoubtedly one of the greatest Mario games of all time, with excellent dialogue, a robust battle system, lengthy quest, captivating storyline, challenging boss fights and meaningful themes. By far one of the best games I've ever played.

And yeah.

I agree TTYD was best, and I kind of agree about Majora's Mask as well (I can never quite commit to a decision between OoT and MM).

As for Harry Potter, though, I felt the books were each better than the previous, with the exception of the sixth book which I liked more than the seventh.  The Half-Blood Prince is easily my favourite Harry Potter book because it reveals so much about Severus Snape and Tom Riddle, who are my favourite characters.

Depends on the medium. With video games the original is rarely the best but with movies the original is usually the best.
