I just ran across this:

It allows you to play imported Wii and GC games from any region without modding your console and voiding the warranty.  It's only $20US which seems like a pretty good deal.

Unless you're already using online regularly, you could always turn off your router.  Hopefully Nintendo will turn the other cheek on this one... at least for a while.  If I lived in Europe or Australia, (or knew Japanese), I'd be all over this, regardless of the potential Wii updates.
