Rockstar has produced an edited version of Grand Theft Auto IV for Australia in order to obtain an MA15+ rating.

The Office of Film and Literature Classification awarded the game an MA15+ rating on December 11 last year, advising consumers that the game contains "strong violence, strong coarse language, drug and sexual references".

A Rockstar spokesperson confirmed to Screen Play yesterday that the company had produced a special version of GTA IV to comply with the Australian classification system, which does not currently contain an R18+ rating, but declined to reveal what material had been cut.

The game has been rated R18+ by the British Board of Film Classification, New Zealand's OFLC and the German Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle. It has been rated M17+ by the Entertainment Software Rating board in North America.

The Grand Theft Auto series has a chequered past with the OFLC in Australia.

In 2001, thousands of copies of GTA III were sold before the game was rated and refused classification because players could pick-up prostitutes. An edited version was later released.

2002's Gran Theft Auto: Vice City was also edited for Australian audiences.

In 2005, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has its original MA15+ rating overturned and the game pulled from retail shelves after it was revealed game discs contained a hidden "Hot Coffee" sex mini-game. An edited version rated MA15+ was soon back on sale.

Grand Theft Auto IV is released in Australia on April 29.

Another blow to the Australian gaming community.  Thankfully Rockstar submitted an edited version for review, otherwise there's a strong possibility that it might have be banned outright.  I'm not going to post very much of my own thoughts on the matter in this initial post as I'd prefer to see the thoughts of others, (particularly from our members in Oz), concerning both this particular instance as well as Australia's current lack of an "R" rating equivalent for games.

Also, to those of you that will live there that would like to play the game in full, uncensored glory, keep in mind that if you have a PS3 you can just import it from the US or UK, (the PS3 is region-free  :D).

Yeah, but I think they may be introducing the R18+ rating to Aus games soon... I read that somewhere.

Honestly? Doesn't bother me. While I enjoy the GTA series, I don't find it to be as good as many other people do, and I'm sure everything I would enjoy about the game is still intact.

Although, this does bring up another point about RATING SYSTEMS AND SOCIETY IN GENERAL !@#$% WITH ARTISTIC VISION! That's pretty much the only thing that this relates to that I have a problem with, but I'm sure the game will be mostly the same anyway.

Yeah, censoring art is just plain wrong. And, games are an art-form too. I don't play GTA, so this doesn't bother me as such, but still...

On the other hand, I do believe the OFLC were considering holding a discussion about the R rating in games.

New zealand is gay.

I had a teacher from NZ last year, boy was that fun, everyone except for four people would !@#$% her off to near-breaking point in class, she'd never teach us anything, one time she snapped and gave two kids colouring sheets during class.

But enoguh of my new zealand bashing, we're probably getting r18, in an article beneath that one, it says 70% of aussie gamers are 18+, and heaps of people want it.

It's hard to guess what may or may not have been removed from the game, but it can be assumed that it's nothing major.  I think we can all rest assured, Australian or otherwise, that the game will be just as entertaining either way, (assuming you like this type of game to begin with).  I made this topic more as a discussion on the principal of the changes.

Australia, more often than not, gets the short end of the stick all around with gaming.  Typically games come out far later, (even after Europe, who honestly also get screwed over with release dates), get edited, or banned outright, (for instance, Dark Sector.  I recently bought this game.  It's not fantastic, but it is pretty fun and by no means more violent then certain other games that have already been released there).  I've read, (as others have already mentioned), that they are getting closer to an 18+ rating, and that's fantastic.  I can only hope that this becomes effective almost immediately.

People complain about censorship in North America, and rightfully so, despite how liberal we may be with it in contrast to other places in the world.  Gaming is a form of artistic and individual expression and should never be held back by clueless parents that can't understand this.  Yes, there should always be ratings and age limits for things such as this, (music, movies, games, books, etc), to help parents keep inappropriate content from their children, but in this day and age to believe that video-games are only capable of being "games" is just ignorant.  They can be just as beneficial as a book, an educational movie, or anything else for that matter.

Even if gaming in North America is stifled by ignorant conservatives, as wrong as it may be, be thankful that gaming awareness has become as progressive as it has, as we are minority in the global view.  For those of you in Australia or Europe, be thankful that your respective homes are more progressive than if you were to live in even the most industrialized and modern parts of Africa or Central and South America.  They get !@#$% on with this sort of thing more than most of us could even imagine, and that's not cool.  No matter where you live, you need to stand up for freedom of expression in any and every format whenever possible and in whatever way you can.

That last sentance reminded me of V for vendetta, but yeah, we get screwed over in terms of gaming, we get over-priced games as well, here, a wii game costs... about 90 US dollars. Ah well, I think Australai as a whole is getting better in terms of gaming

Well, obviously that's irrelevant, as it actually makes sense.

!@#$% censorship. An artist's vision shouldn't have to suffer just because some people are too stupid to understand the workings of a !@#$% toaster.

yup, NZ games are PAL.

Only a naive tool would think censorship is beneficial in anyway.
Censorship is just the act of cutting off information.
It's up to you to decide the worth of that information- not teh gubberments<3.

Do you honestly think the content in GTAIV, or anything for that matter would cause you to say- murder someone?
If so- you are a retard, and censorship only works for retards.

It's funny how most gamers that hate Jack Thompson want to murder him. Ironic, huh?
