Entertainment / Re: Zelda music is mathematically golden
« on: December 19, 2008, 11:54:33 pm »
Not new, in fact almost 2 years old, but I just found this after some intense web surfing. Anybody who particularly loves the Zelda series music (head count?) should find this interesting; anyone who's also a math and music theory nerd should grab a change of underwear.

http://www.thetanooki.com/2007/03/03/zelda-music-of-golden-proportions/

This writer, a student of music, did some major research and describes, using applications of the mysterious "Golden Ratio" and some specific musical terms, how it's beyond coincidence that there's a reason why many Zelda tunes seem so magnificent, aside from powerful melodies and chord progressions. Results are decidedly awesome.

Don't worry, he summarises in simple enough wording, so that the mathematically-impaired or anyone who doesn't know a lick of music theory can still understand. Audio samples are included, naturally.

I would worship Koji Kondo if it made any sense to do so.

I did just change my underwear. This is epic win. Thanks for posting.

Discussion / Re: Possible way for Mac and Linux users to make GM games?
« on: December 14, 2008, 10:31:10 pm »
Yes, he has extensively studied the GM runner among other things, and is constantly working on G-Java, a program that takes a .gm6 and spits out something that compiles as Java - so it'll run like your game normally would, but work on any computers because of Java's cross-compatibility. I don't know much about it -just send a PM to ismavatar at the GM forums.

Of course, I prefer GM. You can pretty much do anything you want in it. It has downsides in two main areas: security and speed. I doubt you'll be creating the next Crysis, though, so for hobbyist Zelda games, I really think GM is the best deal.

I agree. Even though I'm interested in development, I don't think everyone else should have to be. You can center a forum around development whilst allowing people to discuss about other things, as well. Those people who don't come here for the games might as well leave now.

Yeah, I guess the admins are trying...but this is a bad, bad move.

What about Futurama? Actually, for some reason I think Spongebob is !@#$% hilarious.

Actually, I think Courage the Cowardly Dog is one of the finest, most original, and most varied/interesting cartoons to grace the Cartoon Network in the past couple of years.

Zelda Projects / Re: [DEMO] The Legend of Zelda: WORKING TITLE
« on: October 22, 2008, 11:12:15 pm »
i have decided to change the concept for the game from using portals to something else, I'm not sure what yet but i have some ideas for what i might do instead.

...Now you're not thinking with portals.

28
I'm a bit confused. KM, are you releasing a new demo for NCFC? Cuz I don't see a new one up - unless you just haven't gotten to it yet.

I mean, no comments are necessary from me. Same high quality, as usual. Wish he'd work on ZFGCCP with us, but you know how it goes :D.

From the boss fight with the Maren, I'm a bit worried that the game will be too easy - but that's just preconceived notions. I'm hoping for some difficulty after Minish Cap was disappointingly easy.

Out of curiosity, what is your profession? Are you a graphic designer for some company or something? I mean, that's what I'd assume from watching this video and your other videos.

Can't wait for the 21st.

Scroll down and watch the trailer.

At first, I creamed my pants knowing the trailer was released; after watching it, I proceeded to bang my head against the wall until I forgot I had watched it.

Actually, that is a really good song, but not in this show. The original folk version is really, really good and I recommend it.

Entertainment / Re: Funny Zelda game experiences!
« on: September 27, 2008, 05:06:41 pm »
In this topic, we talk about amusing experiences or happenings we've had playing Zelda games!

I remember the first time I played OoT...it was rather scary for me. The redeads especially. Redeads scared the !@#$% !@#$% out of me. They still do, a little bit. The shadow temple, oh god the shadow temple....*shudders* that gave me nightmares. And the Wallmasters and Floormasters! Those things made me reeeeeally nervous, even if I never really had a problem avoiding them.

And after I first became Adult Link, I read in Nintendo Power that the Forest Meadow would have Moblins in it. For some reason, this scared me immensely. I was unable to pick the game up for a week until I realized I was being stupid. XD

I remember the first time I played Minish cap, as I was fighting the final boss, I said, out loud, "Die !@#$%!"...

I remember the first time I came out of the Temple of Time as adult Link and !@#$% my pants when I heard the redeads scream at me.

Yeah, FLStudio is nice software, but the quality of software isn't the point. It's the idea of structure and a melody, that returns to a main theme.

Audio / Re: Music Creations

You really just need basic melodies and themes in your songs. I mean...freeform music is really good in certain instances, but yours isn't, unfortunately - because it's so dissonant, and I don't hear any structure in it. Putting down two or three note chords won't make music, unfortunately.

Listen to Twinkle, Twinkle - one of the most basic songs. It has a theme to it - a rhythm, and a key, and a melody.

I really am trying to be constructive...but how are you making your "songs"?? Like, do you just open up Finale or whatever you use and at random intervals put two random notes? In all seriousness - that's what it sounds like, right now.

EDIT:

I took your piece "Not so happy ending" and created something with a bit of structure from it - just to give you an example of where you can go with your melodies and ideas. Granted, it's only about 10 seconds, but maybe it'll help.

I wish we could do a Far Cry tourney. That's really the only FPS I play besides CSS and I think it's a lot better.
