The Palettes Topic

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A palette is a surface on which a painter mixes colour pigments. A palette may be made of wood, glass, plastic, ceramic tile or other inert material and can vary greatly in size and shape. The most commonly known type of painter's palette is made of thin wood board designed to be held in the artist's hand and rest on the artist's arm.  In this case the palettes are for sprites and if they are to really fit the rest of the graphics (if it uses a particular palette) the correct palette should be used.  The palettes listed in this topic are specific for different games or styles.  Happy spriting! :)

TomPel: that's great, however, is that just the SNES palette?  Or is that exactly the palette they use for LTTP?  Where do you get these at, anyway?

TomPel's image seems to be missing.  Either that or my computer is screwed up.  Either way, here's the "official" LttP palette that people generally use.  However, I have to say that it is by no means accurate.  In fact, someone once made a program that would take any image, change each pixel's color to the nearest color on this palette, and give you the output image.  I put in an actual map rip from LttP and the colors got screwed up.

Nonetheless, if you insist on it:

I use sprites from TSR(sprites that are accurate, some do not have accurate colors)

Lttp Palette(This palette may not have all the colors, but it has most of them):

Mc Palette(This palette has the colors from most NPCs, and other colors, Unfinished)

I never knew Mc had so many colors... Nintendo could have shortened their palette, because a lot of these colors are very close.

png CHANGES a little the color, IMO maybe that's why some colors are very close, meybe are the same. but if someone saved them in png well...

PNG does change colour, you can't expect for a file format to be perfect.

Actually aab is right 32bit-png dosent suffer from color loss, its compression scheme is nothing like gif and jpeg which you guys seem to be linking it to.

Full documentation HERE
Make sure to read the first paragraph and notice this line

PNG supports lossless compression

Hell look at this if you dont believe me, a full color wheel saved in png:

If it had color loss i would have noticed it by now i use png on a daily basis in my projects. And i have never had a problem with it.

Yep. zlibs lossless compression's been around for years. Take what is eqivelant to bitmap data (unless interleaving), slice into max 32 k chunks (so programmers can rely on a static memory buffer which is more reliable and robust to program with - png is designed to be easy and usefull to both use and program with), compress each chunk , then wrap each chunk (obviously it'd be done one chunk at a  time though) with info about it, then add in a header at the start (and palette is it uses 8-bit mode), and whatever other things such as transparent colour, gamma correction etc (or even this: programmers can add custom data to pngs that can be labelled such that other programs most propably know to ignore it, which is a great feature).

zip a bitmap and compare it to a png. They are practically the same size => Standard compression. You dont expect zips to cause loss in quality to bmps.. Also means that the time it takes to zip and unzip a png is more than the extra transfer time taken lol, so unless your really stingie, dont bother zipping pngs (unless they happen to have unusually large headers, or have palette data).

It has none, point blank. Its a fact. ZLib compression is loss-less.
