Title: ZFGC Game Jam '14 - NOW OPEN
Post by: MG-Zero on July 23, 2014, 10:26:47 pm
Yes, that's right ZFGC!  We are hosting a motha' forkin' game jam!

For those unfamiliar with game jams, developers are given an allotted time to develop a game based around a very vague theme.  The theme can be worked in as a mechanic or as some other part of the game (an end goal for example).

Usually game jams only last the duration of a weekend, or a week at most.  However, we here at ZFGC are forkin' fantastic.  We're giving the whole month of August for entrants to dev dev dev!

THE THEME!!!!
And the theme of Game Jam '14 is....

GORONS!!!

Your game MUST be themed in some way, shape or form around gorons!  We don't care what it is, it could be about a goron picking flowers for all we care.  The only other requirement is a little twist we're adding.

The mystery sound effect!  Attached to this post is a dummy audio file.  This file MUST appear somewhere in your game.  Use it wherever you want.  As a menu selector, as an attack, whatever.  The fun part for everyone is that when we turn these games loose for everyone, we're going to replace that audio file with our mystery sound effect.  None of you are going to know what it is.  Are you going to end up making a cannon that makes cute little fairy sounds?  Or maybe your explosion sound effects are going to sound like Mario screaming as he falls to his death.  Whatever the case is, the provided dummy audio file needs to be references externally from the project so we can actually change it.  If you don't know how to do this, please let us know so we can help you.  And to be specific, this is a sound effect!  It is not music!

So a quick summary of the rules:

1) The theme of the game is gorons.
2) The game must include our provided dummy audio file (attached to this post)
3) Teams are allowed with a max of 2 people per team.
4) Whatever assets you use that you did not create, you must credit them.

For the first time in the history of ZFGC, WE ARE GIVING AWAY ACTUAL PRIZES THIS TIME.  THREE TO BE EXACT.

First place will get this guy!

Second place will get this thing!

And finally, third place will get a pack o' these things!

Games are also not expected to be a fully expansive game.  It can be a game about a goron pooping in a toilet for rupees for all we care.

SO GET ON THIS, ZFGC.  WE WANNA SEE SOME WACKY GAMES.

I just want to point out that art and aesthetics does not necessarily matter! If your game is functional, awesome, and just generally great, it stands a chance against something that is visually beautiful.

Good thing I don't know much scripting, because getting any of those shipped here would be too expensive  :'(

Good luck to all the contestants! I'd love to see some great mini-games for this, and let's see if new people appear for this  :D

Sounds interesting!  I'd want to participate, but I wouldn't be able to use all the time properly, since the next semester starts around the middle of August.  But I'll keep my eye on what goes on here.

I tried to get 3rd place in a contest on purpose earlier this year and succeeded. I'm still not sure how.

So, with this there are some things that need clarifying.

1) Is this a Zelda fan game jam, or is it open to general projects?
2) If it is a fan game jam, what content and how much of it must be created from scratch? (e.g. use of existing sprites/models/audio from the source games or even those provided by the community).
3) Because there are physical prizes, you may want to clarify any details regarding shipping/availability. Where things can/cannot be sent and the like.

Post by: Starforsaken101 on July 25, 2014, 08:06:10 pm
Hey! On a train, will do my best to answer well.

1) we will announce the theme soon. Whether it's Zelda or non Zelda is not something I care about (can be either unless Steve has something against it).

2) seeing as its just a game jam I do not particularly mind where you get your assets. However if you're seeking on de eloping this into something bigger later on, make sure to switch assets or ask permission if done by our community.

3) good point.

DOUBLE POST SORRY FOR BREAKING THE RULES

ANNOUNCEMENT: After some consideration, we have decided that it would be appropriate to work in TEAMS! Teams may be a size of maximum 2 (e.g.: programmer and artist, two programmers, artist and artist, I don't care). What will happen with prizes? Both members of the winning team will receive the same prize (e.g. the participants of the #1 winning team will both receive a nendoroid Link figurine).

Theme and regulations will be posted shortly!

Well that theme throws pretty much any non-Zelda game concept out of the window, ha ha.  I can't say I'm too surprised though; this IS a Zelda fansite after all.  If I was going to do a last minute entry, it'd have been for a quick little original thing, that could later grow into something else.

I don't see how you can't even with the theme being Goron. You make your quick little thing and then theme it around Gorons. It could be decoration, could be anything. Then all you have to do is strip out the Goron !@#$% and develop it into whatever you want later on.

I'd like to point out that Game Maker Studio does not allow external sounds from what I have read thus far with the new audio engine.  THey removed the feature from 8.1 to GM:S as they claimed the new system relies on converting everything to .ogg formats that the exe decompresses and loads on runtime.

Something like that anyway.

Yeah, !@#$% that.  The old engine sucks ass.  Half the time, the built-in mp3 system glitches out which results in music being looped that should be stopped.  It has happened to me more times than I care to count.  I don't ever use that trash system anymore, nor should anyone be required to use it.  When I tell an mp3 to stop, I get "mp3 audio device blah blah blah" stuff in the console.  I've looked it up and there are no fixes.  When this occurs, a song that should be stopped continues to loop or worse - it takes the place of a sound effect.  It's not my code, it just does it.

If it was my code, it should still be doing that glitchy stuff with the new audio engine, but it doesn't.

Just use wav files :P They're larger sure, but it doesn't really affect much outside of filesize.

Yeah, sorry, I don't have the bandwidth to be dealing with .wav formatted songs.  Not everyone has access to dedicated internet(tethering on my phone right now with 15Kbps throttled speed) and the nearest WIFI location is 15 minute drive.  That and it's just a unnecessary waste to force huge .wavs just for some audio system now deprecated by 3 years. :P

Contestants shouldn't have to break their backs for a small stipulation.  I am sure a middle-ground can be met.  Just awaiting what the judges say.

I have a solution if Steve would post it for other GM:S users:
THe sound needs to be saved in a compressed ON DISK format in its properties in GM:S.  Then, the entire game needs to be saved in .zip or Installer format.  This creates the .exe separate from any compressed music/sound files.  The music/sound files are saved in the same location as the .exe.
I assume the game will then load on the fly as needed.  Hence, the issue is worked around!

:D

lol.

I'm glad you found a solution. If other contestants have issues please let us know (a fuss doesn't have to be started). We are very open to making your games work with the rules we set. If any other contestant is breaking their back over external audio just speak up. No fusses needed.

I'm very happy with the teasers that have been posted so far and very much look forward to seeing final results!

Honestly though, using GM:S (1.3), I've had no issues with mp3s using the old sound engine :p it's pretty straight forward and works pretty easily. Although your solution to the external audio is neato and avoids the need for the old engine entirely so that's coo~

As per Gamemaker Studio 1.4 external sound (=old sound engine) has been made obselete.

Please advice on how to procede without the option of external sounds.

When you load your sound file into Game Maker Studio, set its property as Compressed on on file.  It's usually the last option.  When you compile your game, compile it as an Installer or .ZIP.  Your sound file is then made external to the exe instead of baked right into the exe.  I haven't for sure tested it, but anyone should then be able to change that sound file as long as it keeps the same name.

It is possible that Game Maker does a filesize check or a checksum with the exe though.

So, between finals, some recently-arising professional stuff (those of you I interact with outside of ZFGC will know, but don't tell! :D), I'm probably not going to have the time to compete in this. Maybe next time, though!

I'm really curious to see what I'm up against XD I'm really pouring my heart and soul into this project.

Actually I'm really curious about who's seen progress on mine other than people I've sent it to directly. I've posted a couple of things about it when I was searching for an audio guy~

For myself, I'm not in this to win. I'm in it just to have fun. So, complete or not I am shipping what we have. And working with Kren has been awesome.

For my girlfriend and Damien, whatever prize is given(if any), then I am doing it for them.

Either way, I feel like I'll win because win or lose the competition, the experience is good enough. That's what matters, right? Also, gm112 here incase if people forgot who I was. Good to know that there are still three contestants. I actually lost all of my source code today, but I've managed to rewrite almost all of it. Crazy.

EDIT: Update.. just managed to rewrite a lot of my core. Entity system in place, tile system in place, event stack machine in place, main loop logic(cozy delta timing + render tweening) in place, partial map format support.

Almost there with programming game logic exclusively again, so I shall complete the last bits by later today/tomorrow. Awesome comeback on my part, I'll say.

It's probably close enough to the deadline now that I can feel free to say this...

But Theforeshadower and I teamed up for our entry (Which frankly if we hadn't I probably wouldn't have done anything with this lol)

My role in it is more or less done but TFS seems to be MIA right now. So I may be polishing up my branch of the build and submitting that on his behalf as well if he doesn't reappear soon

And uh... It's an old build because I was focusing on one certain feature while he did a lot of the other stuff (It was a big job to be fair) So if that happens it might be a little rough ;) Hell it's gonna be a little rough even if he comes back and we scramble to finish haha

Can't all be organized!

Anyway good luck to everyone and congrats Mammy for being the first person to finish (that I know of)

Do whatever work around you have to to get the file therethere I'm fine with work arounds as long as the file is external.  we provided a small wav as the placeholder,  it shouldn't cause you a million problems.

As per Gamemaker Studio 1.4 external sound (=old sound engine) has been made obselete.
See: https://yoyogames.com/tech_blog/73 (https://yoyogames.com/tech_blog/73)

Please advice on how to procede without the option of external sounds.

When you load your sound file into Game Maker Studio, set its property as Compressed on on file.  It's usually the last option.  When you compile your game, compile it as an Installer or .ZIP.  Your sound file is then made external to the exe instead of baked right into the exe.  I haven't for sure tested it, but anyone should then be able to change that sound file as long as it keeps the same name.

It is possible that Game Maker does a filesize check or a checksum with the exe though.

Just tried it. I does not seem to be working.
How about I just add in the new sound myself right at the end. I can present you our game first, then get the new sound and present the updated version directly after. That way there is no way for us to cheat with the sound (if that's an concern).

I'm having the same issues too actually. I didn't realize they completely removed the load sound function vs just marking it as depreciated.

Far as I'm concerned we have until Sept 1st 12:00 AM EST to finish this. I'm going to take tomorrow to put a little bit of spit-shine polish on it (There are still some things that need to be done)

But we're feature complete as of today and could probably turn it in as-is so... IT'S HABBENING

Yeah what he's saying is... Our game had online (which I was in charge of coding) and by the time we got around to actually testing it... Most people probably won't be able to use it online :P

Soooo it works if you have four clients local at 127.0.01 or if your router isn't very well secured but uh... yeah lol

!@#$% happens. Like polish sausage on a grill

I'm mostly waiting on a music load from Commandycan at the moment- he's a good way done with the music, but there's a chance the deadline will creep up before I have time to implement it. I'll update after the compo with the rest of the tracks so people can try it out in absolute completion too

The admins discussed this, and decided that the prizes are not substitutional. The only way you can switch prizes is by having both prize winners agree that they may switch.
