Other Projects / [Released] Starling Fall for Android
« on: January 25, 2014, 09:20:31 pm »
Hello ZFGC, I would like to present to you the release of my first Android game: Starling Fall!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIaZq5WqRBI

This game is a frantic arcade game in which you collect green orbs and bring them to your crashed space ship to earn points. It has high scores and achievements powered by Google Play Games, and I personally think it's a lot of fun.

You can download it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nickavv.starling

Thanks for checking it out!

For a game

Just got the arms down right now. I'm proud of them because usually when I model robot arms I just slap some spheres/cylinders together, and give it lego hands, and call it a day.

Other Projects / [WIP] Volatile Space [7/22/12 new video]
« on: July 03, 2012, 02:44:42 am »
Volatile Space (Working Title)
Scientists aboard the research vessel known as the Pea have been drifting into the depths of space to record data on uncharted regions of the cosmos for months. They have recently drifted into an area they call Volatile Space, for its random oceans of extremely hot and cold gasses, and relentless waves of icy and fire-y meteors.

To ensure their survival you will have to man the defensive shield, which rotates 360ยบ around the edge of the ship. If the ship is drifting through a cloud of hot gas, you will have to block fire-y meteors, and allow icy ones to hit the ship. Vice-versa when the ship is in a cloud of cold gas.

If you let the ship's temperature go beyond its maximum or minimum temperature thresholds, the hull integrity will begin to drop. If you manage to get the temperature back under control, the engineers on-board can repair the damage, slowly...
Occasionally you may also see solid asteroids which, if not blocked, will directly impact hull integrity! Be careful!

VIDEO (7/22/12)
Video showing off gameplay concepts. Some graphical glitches are present, some envisioned features are not yet implemented, and some numbers need to be tweaked for optimal gameplay, but the core concepts are here in this video

Latest Screen: I can now control space-clouds through code. I don't think I'll sandwich them together like this ever in-game, but it certainly looks cool!

EDIT: I should mention, this is going to be a mobile game, targeting Android at first, and iOS at a later date if the Android version is profitable

Other Projects / [WIP] Disc Golf
« on: May 31, 2012, 04:15:56 am »
I got my ass handed to me again today in Disc Golf by my cousins/dad/uncle. I'm going to have to find some courses out east to practice on so next time I come out here to visit I'll be able to hold my own better. Until then, I'm working on a Disc Golfing game, just for the hell of it.

As of today I've modeled a disc, and a basket (no chains yet), and gotten some basic physics working. Check it out:

super short video

Stay tuned!

Now that Portal 2 has an awesome Puzzle Editor, I figured I'd make a thread to share maps you've made. Here are mine:

Characters / Gator-head
« on: May 04, 2012, 10:14:25 pm »

"RRRGHRH", Gator-head growled, slowly coming to from an uncomfortable unconsciousness.

"Excellent question, my friend." a decidedly unfriendly voice responded from the shadows of the white room.
Gator-head looked around. He was strapped to some sort of operating table. Harsh lights shone down on him, heating his reptilian blood.
"Oh, I'm terribly sorry, I haven't introduced myself." said the voice, as the operating table rotated to an upright position. "I am Doctor Hawthorne, PhD."
Gator-head gave the doctor a once-over. He was wearing a white labcoat. His bald head was punctuated by a jagged scar over his right eye, and a black handlebar mustache. He couldn't have looked more like a cliched evil doctor if he had been trying. Perhaps he was trying.

"In response to your earlier question of where you are, you are in one of the operating rooms of my lab. You are the result of a particularly excellent experiment indeed."
"GRAGRGH" Gator-head said, with displeasure.
"What sort of experiment? Well, look for yourself!"

A mirror swung down from the ceiling, and Gator-head looked at himself. To his horror, his head appeared to be that of an Alligator. Or maybe a Crocodile. It definitely did not look like that before he had been kidnapped and taken here, though Gator-head couldn't remember the details of his life before this rude awakening very clearly. Regardless, the new head explained why he was only talking in guttural growls.

Doctor Hawthorne began to laugh maniacally. He had really nailed this evil doctor role.
"That's right! You're the world's first human-reptile hybrid! Or at least, the first one to survive" he added under his breath
"RAWRHGHRR"
"A cure? Well, I do still have your old head in cryogenic storage, I'm sure it could be reattached. But that's really not important to me. I've learned all I need from this experiment, and with that, I bid you adieu."

With a mechanical whir, the operating table rotated to a full upright position. A segment of the floor, directly under Gator-head, slid open, revealing a shaft with no bottom in sight. The binds released and Gator-head fell into the pit, the sounds of Hawthorne's laughter ringing in his ears.

"RRRGHRH", Gator-head growled again, slowly coming to from an uncomfortable unconsciousness again. He was in a dark alley, lying in a puddle. It was very cold. He was still wearing white loose clothing from the lab, with a barcode printed on his shirt. He didn't remember who he had been, but now he was Gator-head, and he would find Doctor Hawthorne and get his head reattached, or die trying.

Discussion / Zelda: Modern Concept
« on: April 08, 2010, 10:15:43 pm »
MAJOR PLOT TWIST DUDE. I am not actually referring to a Zelda game set in modern times. I am instead referring to a Zelda game designed with more modern gaming conventions in mind to make something unique and enjoyable. Here are the main elements that differ this concept from current Zelda games:

OPEN WORLD
The Legend of Zelda series is just begging to be open-world. After all, the first game was, allowing you to go anywhere and do anything you wanted as long as you had the rupees and the right items.
This would be true in my game as well, save for a few world elements that would need plot-based activation (such as a hidden dungeon entrance), but there would be no specific order for the dungeons, or anything else for that matter. In addition to the main plot, side quests would be able to be accepted from NPCs. Link would keep track of these in a quest book.

MINIMAL HUD
The heads up display would be kept to a bare minimum. Hearts and Rupees, and menu screens when necessary. For the map Link would pull out a physical map and hold it close to the camera, while the game switches into first person. For the quest log Link would pull out a physical book in the same manner. Other things, such as interaction cues, would be shown hovering over the interactive object in the game world rather than on a HUD.

CONTROLS
As this would be a fan game, controls would be designed for PC like modern third person PC games. The mouse would look, left and right click would perform the primary and secondary functions of the currently equipped weapon or item. WASD would move Link, etc.
Mouse looking means you would be able to aim Link's sword to attack enemies above or below you rather than use an artificial lock-on system.

NPCS
Not a ton to say in this section, but the NPCs would be voice acted. Link, of course, would remain stoically silent, as is his character.

Yeah, those are my ideas for the time being. If you have any really good ones feel free to chime in. Also, I'd be happy to make this game, but I kinda absolutely suck at 3d art, and I admit that. So if any 3d artists are willing to go collab with me I'd love to give it a shot. (Art style in my head is somewhere in between Wind Waker's full out cartoony graphics and proportions, and the realistic style of TP. Like, realistic proportions, but with simple textures and lighting. Of course, whatever you're capable of works for me).

Discussion / Untitled "2.5D" Zelda
« on: February 23, 2010, 03:38:30 am »

I'm going to make a small Zelda game in Unity. 2D gameplay, like the old games. Right now it has a Wind Waker Link model, rigged and animated, and an 8-directional walking engine. Broken sign reading, and a half-completed hearts system (not pictured).

I'll keep you posted.

Hey guys! So I made a game for iPhone/iPod Touch. It's currently for sale in the App Store! I'll keep this updated so you know how the review process is going. Entertainment / What games would you like to see remastered
« on: January 17, 2010, 02:46:28 pm »
Okay, so we all know what that God Of War Collection for PS3 is, right? God of War and God of War 2, two PS2 games, remastered with high definition graphics, and with trophies added for both games.

My question to you is, what other sets of two PS2 games would you like to see put in an HD collection like this. Here's a couple of mine to get you started:

Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 (substance/subsistence versions of course, including subsistence disk 2)

Viewtiful Joe and Viewtiful Joe 2

So, today's WAR update for TF2 announced that people can make propaganda posters and send them in for a chance to win a unique item with your name on it in TF2. I side with the soldier, so here's mine:

Post yours, if you plan on making any.

Guess what? I played TFC today with actual people! Last time I played it was around a year ago, and there were plenty of servers but they were all 100% bots. Today there seems to be a good handful of human only servers (even one humans vs bots server). It was fun. :P Anyone wanna play with me some time?

Audio / Moldorma's Music Thread
« on: October 10, 2009, 08:35:54 pm »
Hey, I made a music thread! Would you look at that (oh wait, you already are!).
Anyways, I'm gonna put all my music here from now on.

Marble Zone - Done
Listen now! (Version 1)
Listen now! (Version 2)
Listen now! (Version 3)
For my Marble Zone piece I'm leaving the main melody as close to the original as possible. I'm aiming to use instruments that give you a feeling of ancient jungle ruins.

Sonic 3 Act Clear - Done
Listen now! (8-bit edition)
Sonic got through act 8-bit!

Green Hills Zone - Done
Listen now! (Version 1)
Listen now! (Version 2)
It's Green Hills Zone from Sonic 2 GameGear! My first time using VST plugins rather than soundfonts. This one's done now too!
