Entertainment / Re: Games That Just Dump You in the World.
« on: September 09, 2012, 04:28:37 pm »
I think it really depends on how much interaction you have with the world as a player. A game like minecraft or terraria where you build the world yourself (combined with other factors such as random world generation, lack of story objectives) is suited quite well to the whole dumping technique. Personally I wouldn't want it any other way.
Other games like the elder scrolls/fallout series, while having an initial introduction into the main quest basically thrust you out to explore and interact, although the interaction here is not so much with shaping the world but interacting with its inhabitants. The only thing that goes wrong here for me is I haven't completed the main quest for a single one of these games simply because I end up doing my own thing :P, and I guess I could be missing out on a great experience, or maybe what I make of the game myself is more rewarding.

I think too many games nowdays handhold the player for far too long, especially those that expect you to follow a linear story. I usually find myself getting less enjoyment out of these simply because most of the stories don't capture my attention and I find myself leaning towards games that aren't so restrictive. It definitely works for some games, but I don't think I can even think of one off the top of my head as an example of one that I played and enjoyed.

Entertainment / Re: How does your music taste like?

Oh man, I could go on forever about the genres/songs/artists I'm interested in, so it's probably easier to say what I'm not much of a fan of. Which is in general (there'd be exceptions, I just haven't really found them) country, rap, metal/any over distorted guitar and heavy drums. And that's about it for the well known sort of genres. I guess you can say I've slipped more into electronic music over the last few years, but I still like a lot of acoustic stuff too. Orchestral's one of my favorite, particularly the stuff by Two Steps From Hell, some of that sounds amazing.
As for things like dubstep, I do like but not the heavy stuff that doesn't have a melody.
Anyway, here's a few of my current favorites:

Maybe dubstep music should be installed in the next Zelda installment?  -______- Dubstep = almost the end of music
Not sure how you're defining the "end of music", there'll be some new 'mainstream' (not saying this ironically, actually using the meaning of this literally >_>) genre in the next decade. Music just doesn't 'end'.

And dubstep would not suit zelda at all. Horrible idea :P.

I didn't think much of the movie, actually fell asleep through about the middle quarter. I didn't think it was very well paced.

"I am the bone of my sword.
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood.
I have created over a thousand blades.
Unknown to death.
Nor known to life.
Have withstood pain to create many weapons.
Yet, those hands will never hold anything.
So as I pray, "Unlimited Blade Works."

Oh, I remember the engrish of this one XD

I imagine them playing some gypsy instruments since they are all scattered.
Yeah, the biggest issue is coming up with a well balanced instrumentation of 4 or 5 instruments that sound good together. I have a early mockup of a possible composition on my other computer but I won't be back at college for a week yet.

I may have to import this, makes me happy the PS3 is region free. I haven't played a tales game before but it looks interesting enough.

Or, have a minidungeon type thing where every action costs x seashells, so swinging your sword could use 1 and opening a chest could use 5.

Going this route, I'd almost say use the shells as a way to upgrade how many bombs/arrows/rupees you can carry.

If that's what you were expecting, then you know nothing about RPGMaker tilesets. :/ There is a size limit, and only support 4 frames of animation. They also had to be 8bit. I don't recommend that anyone uses them for this project if you were expecting more.
Yeah I understand that, that's why I'm making my own rips :P They're good for conceptualizing though. I haven't used RM2K as much as I used XP, so I'm used to bigger tilesets that don't have as strict limits.

Ah, no worries :P I started by basing my tile set off of yours, but there was too many tiles missing for my liking, namely the animations and the floor moss etc. I'm trying to go for a concise tile set that can be used by anyone, hopefully without any tiles missing. But they are nice rips, back when I was making my own fangame I was actually using these.

Figurines again? I actually liked that you practically had a mini database of enemy/NPC information in MC. Also, since we're giving ages and other details for NPC's, I don't see why that couldn't be used to fill an encyclopedia type book. Or figurines.
