Entertainment / GTAIV Coming to PC Nov. 18th
« on: August 06, 2008, 09:08:42 pm »
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/06/grand-theft-auto-iv-hitting-pc-on-nov-18/

Here's the link, I don't know if anyone around here was waiting for this piece of news, but I'm glad that Rockstar is keeping their PC market in mind. It kinda worries me that they were able to port this so quickly, but who knows how long they've actually been working on it.

www.joystiq.com - It's buried amongst their live report on Microsoft's keynote at E3. They also mentioned that online co-op with be available and that the game plays an awful lot like RE4, but sexier.

***Oh and they were showing off a playable demo.

Entertainment / Metal Gear Solid 4*Possible Spoilers*
« on: June 12, 2008, 08:24:29 pm »
I am but an hour away from completing my work day and then I'm off to play MGS4 and all it's glory. I've managed to miss most spoilers and I won't participate in this thread until I actually get to play the game, but I figure that I'd kick it off. Thoughts? Feelings?

And please use the Spoiler tags so we don't ruin the fun for others.  :D

Entertainment / Mortal Kombat vs DC
« on: April 18, 2008, 06:33:21 pm »
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-gets-confirmation-trailer/

This sucks... I really love the MK series, but this is nothing more than a quick cash in. It makes no sense with the storyline, it conflicts with DC's no Kill policy, and it has NOTHING to do with Mortal Kombat. I am so heartbroken over this, this !@#$% poor decision on Midway's behalf.

**Edit** Here's Gamespot's interview with Ed Boon that goes into a bit more detail: http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/mortalkombat/news.html?page=1&sid=6189513

I'm not liking what I hear about the gameplay mechanics... it's taking away the free form flow that has disapated since Deadly Alliance. The fighting sounds less dependent on speed, combos, and keypad presses and more dependent on timed blows. It's a shame, they started off so fantastic and then they just dropped the ball. When they said that they were going to start anew, I thought it was going to redeem everything, but now it sounds like they just get further and further from the point.

Entertainment / Xbox360 Achievements
« on: April 14, 2008, 05:33:18 pm »
Can anyone tell me what the the appeal of getting an achievement is? I've owned a 360 for 3 years now and I've never found myself elated to get an acheivement. It doesn't unlock anything, all it is, is text saying that you've done something. I miss it when games rewarded you with an item or ability for pulling off something amazing, but now achievments have become a selling point, but I ask why?

P.S. I got the itch to do this rant when people listed on www.joystiq.com their reason to get GTAIV on the 360 instead of the PS3 as getting the achievements. Just seems so pointless to me... I dunno... someone open my eyes.

Entertainment / Quick question about the 1st LoZ game on the NES
« on: April 08, 2008, 06:43:19 pm »
Ok, I'm at the lower far right shop and they have a shield for $130 ruppees, does it take more damage than your default shield or block more things? I can't remember and I don't want to buy it if I don't have to.

Entertainment / Make Something Unreal
« on: April 06, 2008, 06:48:57 pm »
http://www.makesomethingunreal.com

I've always wanted to get into the Unreal Engine, muk around with it. I think my college courses will eventually include a class that we'll get to choose an engine and to make a mod. Anyway, this is open to students from high school and above as well; haven't heard of many people mention Unreal around here, but doesn't mean you aren't hiding out there.

Other Discussion / "Gaming" Mice and Keyboards
« on: January 02, 2008, 05:05:56 pm »
So I've been curious for awhile now, I'd like to hear some opinions on "gaming" keyboards and mice, especially the mice.

I've seen like a $90 wireless mouse from Logitech as well as a $90 keyboard(g15)... do the increases DPI's for the mice make that much of a difference? And for the keyboards, is the main trend just the macros?

Other Discussion / KOTF
« on: January 01, 2008, 06:55:48 pm »
I want to post this here since I'm not talking about this mod(www.kotf.com), but rather the rant of the fact that it's b.s.

This is somethig I've been following for quite awhile, much like OOT2D. This really pisses me off... because I want it to be true, I want to play this sooo friggin bad, but it'll probably never happen. Much like OOT2D, you hear of this fantastic progress... you see some great things, you even get a demo *gasp*. But unlike OOT2D... this guy lays out specific release dates, again and again and again. Then for weeks at a time, there is no word from him. Usually the forum goes down in this period of time and no comments get posted under the news post. Then he'll post again after 2 months or so to say how sorry he is, how he found X number of glitches that needed to be fixed or how X number of personal issues happened the day OF the release(which is funny considering he'll always post up to the release day). He'll disappear only to promise the release once he returns. Like a good stooge I have no choice but to check the site out the day of the release only to find no updates, no news posts, and certainly no links to the downloads.

Why does this keep happening? If these people are so fuckin good at what they do, to create something sooo fantastic, why is something as simple as a release date such a complicated matter? I mean, fuckin upload the game, have everything ready... then post that you'll release it on X date so when the !@#$% hits the fan, all you have to do is upload the links. Are said games elborate pranks? The guy from KOTF asks for donatations($100 bucks for his game on DVD while he's produced nothing in how long?), so is it about money? Does TRM do it just to have fun with forums? I see these guys, I have talked to them... they're smart, it's fully believable with dedicationt that they could do/have done these projects. So what is with the finish line to them? I don't want to think either of these guys are just jerkin the chains, I really don't think that's the case... but what is the case then?

Coding / [Request] C++ Network component/Library?
« on: December 21, 2007, 09:00:54 pm »
Hopefully while I have some time off of school I can work on this card game that I've been wanting to do. It's a PC game, it'll be written in C++, with DirectX. I want this to have a simple online capability with 2-4(or 2-8) players; nothing special, it just needs to be able to connect the people to the game and possibly have chat support.

I doubt I can even begin to create something like that, so my question is: Does anyone know of a library/program/method for me to add network support to this future game? Preferably something that is already done that needs to be plugged in somehow. As you can tell, I'm rather clueless here, any help would be apprecaited. Thanks guys!  :D

I'm getting one for Christmas, I can wait :D

I use to have the Datel Max Media Dock, but damn was it a pain in the ass to play anything. Too many work arounds, but no more! Just need to get something for GBA games and I'll be happy... EZ Flash 3-in-1 is nice from what I hear.

I was really hoping to get this before Nintendo cracked it's whip all the way down.

Anyone else have this?

Other Discussion / Thinking about gOS
« on: November 19, 2007, 07:36:33 pm »
I am a Windows !@#$%, so let's get that out of the way. This would be my first Linux install and I'm doing so because I have an old dell Latitude that runs slow as all hell because it's dirt old. So old, that it does not even have a model number... it's just Dell Latitude. I've decided to use gOS because of it's system requirements and because it simplifies everything which will be very helpful to people who use this laptop and are not computer literate. The use of this laptop is wireless internet access, a word processor, and basic media(ie. Flash, youtube, cds).

My main concern, assuming gOS will even work on the laptop(ie. install/boot/run),is that the wireless may never work on it again... is that true or is there a bunch of wifi drivers out there that I may have a shot with? Does anyone have a good resource site full of downloads(drivers, apps, etc...) for getting started on a new linux build or would anyone be kind enough to suggest software that's relativly easy on the resources and/or may be fun to try out from a tech's perspective? From my understanding, gOS is just a pretty picture on Ubuntu, so I'm guessing what works with one will work on the other?

I checked Dell's site and of course, there's no Linux drivers, but I'm hoping that there's a generic driver out there that may work with this old hardware. Not sure what type of card it is, but I can post that later if that'll help.

Thanks for the tips in advanced and please, please no OS wars here... I just want to use gOS and get it to work. If it fails, then maybe I can start a thread and get some advice on other builds.

Other Discussion / Gaming Laptops
« on: October 23, 2007, 06:14:10 pm »
So, I'm loosly in the market for a gaming laptop... I need something so that I don't have to lug my big ass desktop around with me anymore. I've checked out Dell and Alienware's websites with some interesting results but here's my main problem, I can't apply for a credit card through them because, well my credit sucks. So, that won't change for awhile but it leaves me wondering if there are any other online companies that build custom, gaming laptops that aren't rip offs so that I can shop around for the time money becomes available. Any ideas or suggestions?

Other Discussion / Outlook PST mail extractor?
« on: October 06, 2007, 12:15:16 am »
Hey guys, I've got a user whose PST file is near 2GB and now refuses to open(common issue at our site); I'm not having any luck on finding any programs that can take a PST file and essentially allow you to extract the emails so they can be move to a new pst or 2. All I'm looking for is some freeware or a trail, enough that will at least let me do this fully to one PST. Anyone run into something like this? Thanks in advanced.

Alright, let's show some love for House! On Fox.com they promise to only interrupt House once this year for baseball instead of the disgusting 6 times it was interrupted last year. So let's talk about House, guesses for next season, house-isms, memories, etc...

Other Discussion / PowerPoint - Office XP(2002)
« on: September 02, 2007, 12:30:26 am »
Here's a good one that no one seems to be able to fix:

We have a user that when they go to File - Print or hit CTRL+P, instead of going to the Print Dialog box in PPT, it just directly goes and prints to the default printer. We can't seem to get it to stop that...

We've tried different user profiles, still does it... we've uninstalled Office, deleted all the folder remains, reinstalled Office and it still does it, we've fiddled with the print commands under File Associations, they're the same as with anyone else machine. Deleted any template we can find, it's defintly not the one ppt as we've tried the same on multiple machines and it works fine and all the ppt's on the user's machine does the same thing by skipping the Print Dialog box.

Anyone run into this?

Running XP SP2, all current patches installed, approx. 2,000 users with the same loadset without the issue. Problem didn't happen until the machine was rebuilt.

Coding / GBA Interrupt tutorial request
« on: September 01, 2007, 11:53:51 pm »
Would anyone know of a good tutorial on using interrupts for the GBA? I had my butt handed to me in class and it's over now and I'm still lost; something with examples would be fantastic.

EDIT: Whoops... I should of noted in case it wasn't clear, I'm looking for the tutorial to be in C\C++

What I'm looking for is to use an interrupt to wait for a button input; Best I could do in the class's short amount of time was creat an interrupt that delayed all actions and progression for 2 seconds. I could probably get some hacked job working, but I need something to better explain the concepts and practice so I can better use the code.

Here is my 2 second time delay code so you know what I'm vaguely aiming for:

Code: [Select]
void Delay(int iTime) {

int iMilliSecs, iSecs;

iMilliSecs = iTime % 1000;

iSecs = (iTime - iMilliSecs) / 1000;

REG_TM0CNT = TIMER_FREQUENCY_256 | TIMER_ENABLE;

REG_TM1CNT = TIMER_OVERFLOW | TIMER_ENABLE;

REG_TM0D = REG_TM1D = 0;

while (REG_TM1D < iSecs) {}

while (REG_TM0D < (65535 / 1000) * iMilliSecs) {}

REG_TM0CNT = REG_TM1CNT = 0;

}
