Just some questions:
Using VBA is there an option to turn off certain square and pcm waves so I can rip sound effects?
If not, is there another way I can rip sound effects without having other background noise from music/etc?

Not sure about GB roms as I'm pretty sure that all of the sound is synthesised and not sampled like GBA, but you can try opening as a raw in audacity and fiddle with the sample rate and encoding options until you find something resembling a sound.
I've done it with GBA but I don't think it'll work with GB.

I tried that :/ All you get is some varied white static noise.

Don't think it's possible without isolating game code then, since the sound is generated like a midi and not actually sampled :/ sorry I couldn't help.

Your best bet is to try to figure out what offset the music is at, and figure out what value is "no music". That way you're free to rip the sfx as you please, since that's all that plays :P...

That's how I typically rip audio from the GB zelda's... Just go into create cheat and compare with "<>" any time the music changes.
