 - a 2D Zelda fangame in the tMC style -

By Bermuda Productions

~~~
This is one of many tales Hylian lore speaks of...
Every night when stars rose upon Hyrule, the Dreamkeepers watched over the slumber of the Hylians, from their place beyond the edge of reality.
But one fateful night, when the dreamers where heavy with worry, the Nightmares ascended from the darkness.
The Nightmares plagued the people and soon all hope was lost. With the source of their power withering, the Dreamkeepers began to dissappear.
That was when destiny had a chosen hero...
Traveling beyond the borders of the waking world, the hero felled the nightmares and brought back peace upon the dreams of the people.
The hope returned in the hearts of the Hylians.
~~~

.:Preamble:.
Goal of this project is to create an authentic 2D "tLoZ" fangame with a Gameplay experience similar to that of Nintendo's 2004 Game Boy Advance title "tLoZ: The Minish Cap".
The game is created with Gamemaker 8.1. "Echoes of Aurelia" takes place in a surrealistic setting that is meant to make players wonder and immerse themselves in the world we have imagined.
The game does not try to fit anywhere in the Zelda timeline, though it does use content that has been introduced in the official Zelda titles.

.:Story:.
The Dreamkeepers of Aurelia watch over the slumber of the Hylians. Their task is it to feed the realm of Hyrule with hope.
As Aurelia is formed by the dreams of the Hylians, it is not only a happy place.
The nightmares that plague the Hylians are threatening to bring peril over the Dream Realm.
An evil imp by the name of Alp is summoning ever more nightmares in the sleep of the Hylians bringing more and more danger to Aurelia.

Through a twist of fate, Link and Princess Zelda end up being torn into the realm of Aurelia. To save the princess, Link has to awaken the Dreamkeepers and learn a mysterious melody that has the power to drive the nightmares away: the Echoes of Aurelia.

.:Setting:.
Aurelia is the Realm of Dreams, guarded by the Dreemkeepers.
The world of Aurelia is created by the dreams of the Hylians and thus you can come across basically anything, nothing is really impossible in Aurelia.
Its landscapes are floating islands with elemental themes. For example, one continent is made of forests whereas another is shaped by great amounts of sand.

Echoes of Aurelia centers largely around the use of music to interact with and navigate through the world.
The Ocarina will see an comeback, in all its OoT glory with many new melodies and some old and trusted ones! Much like its sucessor in spirit, the Ocarina will be played by pressing different buttons. Play your song and Aurelia will listen!

.:Feature: the Whispering Woods:.
The Whispering Woods is the first continent Link travels to on his quest to save the realm of dreams.
It's a number of areas that consists of different kinds of forests. Deep within the Whispering Woods, Skyforest Shrine, lies hidden.

Hey, I gave you a karma boost because I really like the appearance of the game and the variety of the screens you included. It's a little confusing as to why the lantern is being used when the area is mostly visible though but overall this project is one that I will be following. Please keep up the good work!

If I include the support image in my signature, would it be alright with you if I changed the URL to refer to this topic though?

Thanks for the support!
And yes I can do that~

As for the lantern, that might be when the area has almost turned into day and the lantern is still active ingame.

Yeah, that's because we have a time system with a slowly transition from day to night. :)
I hope you like our game! We have worked on it since march as we revamped the Time Walker idea.

But really, this looks amazing.  I'm not normally a fan of Minish Cap-style fan games, but this just looks gorgeous!  :D

Just wanted to say hello, everybody. On PZC I go under the nick "Yoshimi", over here I'm "Sheik".
I am one of two guys that invented the original Echoes of Aurelia back in 2009 when it was developed as a Zelda Classic fan game. It was discontinued after it nearly reached completetion and a while ago Gonken has brought the idea back to life. Now we are building the game with GameMaker.
What's my part on it? I am very busy with university (I am making my bachelor's degree in psychology at a German university), thus I'm not really working much on the game anymore. However, most of the concepts and the plot are based and build on ideas by me and I've made some of the custom graphics. The real credit belongs to Gonken, though, as he is the mastermind behind the project. Our coders and our music-head also do fantastic work of course.

It makes me happy to see the overhelming postive feedback we are getting! ZFGC has the reputation to be rather elitist and quick to critique the efforts of other's but my impression here is another one: you seem to be a pretty warm and welcoming community. I'm honored to talk about EoA with you guys. If you have any questions regarding the plot or background story of Aurelia (the world EoA takes place in) or any of the characters I'd be happy to answer if that doesn't mean too much of a spoiler.

The plot is pretty good so far, I saw the wolfos sprite as well.

I didn't get a chance to fully read the plot yet.

The plot is WIP, and written by Sheik. It will be updated eventually when he has time to work on it ;)
The Wolfos sprites are early wip, I'll remake them from scratch anytime in the future. :)

He will not get money from this, so what's the problem?
Giving credit is ok, but nothing more...

You should give credit for everything that you did not make on your own. Generally, if you did not make something in your game and neither did Nintendo, if you don't give credit it makes it look like you did it. It is wrong to take credit for something you did not do. In terms of asking if you can use it, it is the extension of being courteous - you wouldn't want someone taking something from you without letting you know.
Title: Re: [Screens] tLoZ: Echoes of Aurelia
Post by: Metal_X on July 02, 2012, 03:15:14 am
I agree about the credit, but ask permission is too much, it's fan game made from fans to fans, nothing more than that. The more barriers we put fewer fan games we see.
I really think that the prior here is to make a good and interesting game and learn a lot from that. We are amateur devs, not professionals.

I don't see anything wrong asking for permission for something someone else decided to take time to make, more if the artist doesn't mention if he wants his work to get used in a game or not.

Yeah, I guess its somewhat of a hypocritical thing on the artists end to ask for credit on a ripped asset or a slightly modified asset. But yeah, credit's good as for permission? Well, lol. That's a conflict of interest especially in this case.

It's like saying that you should ask for permission to take a !@#$% in your own house. I don't know why I used that analogy, but it is another "wtf" scenario. Nobody wants that.

Quote
We are amateur devs, not professionals.
Quote of the day. Copycats *cough*zygna*cough* shouldn't be allowed to claim ownership of anything. You win the internets!

EDIT: Oh and I forgot to mention, them bushes that Kren was pointing out might be custom work. So the whole "hypocritical" argument might not apply entirely in this case. If that particular sprite ISN'T custom? Then Metal_X's argument fully applies, Kren.

The area is not a snow area. :P  Its a forest.

I didn't know the name of the sprite creator, If i would know it I would've credited him.

Well then that settles it. It's not a big issue in all honesty, Gonken. It was just an oversight that got pointed out and lead to a somewhat pointless bickering lol. Anyhow I look forward to further progress on this project. :)

Title: Re: [Screens] tLoZ: Echoes of Aurelia
Post by: Sheik on July 05, 2012, 09:00:39 pm
Gonken is doing a wonderful job on the mapping indeed. :) I hope that I'll find some time to learn GM8 mapping and map some parts of the world myself, but we will see.

Meanwhile, I thought I might show you some of the concept art I drew for EoA. Here's two pieces centered around creatures known as "Dreamkeepers". The Dreamkeepers of Aurelia have the task of giving hope and new energy to the dreamers ( - "dreamer" is the Aurelian word for the Hylians).
(Edit: In the terms of Aurelian lore, the Windfish of Koholint would be considered a "Dreamkeeper". One of impressive power though, as he holds control over a whole dream realm on his own. Aurelian Dreamkeepers aren't as powerful on their own.)
Notice the paralells to the Link's Awakening theme of dreaming? They are intended. Aurelia is supposed to be one of many "possible" dreamworlds, much like Koholint. (I was pending whether to give away that Aurelia isn't "real" in the sense that Hyrule is considered real, but I suppose that's clear so early in the game that it's not spoiling the player too much. There's waiting real threaths in Aurelia, though!)

The concepts are in the spoiler tag below. They are kinda big, that's why.

The music sounds beautiful. What program does invertedman use to make it?

The graphics are also beautiful, and I love the surrealistic approach, it's one I don't think I've ever seen in a Zelda game, but one you're making fit really well. The graphical style is seamless, everything fits very well together and looks marvelous. Any word on the gameplay, though?

Now what can I say about the engine, Freki did an amazing job with the engine and everything runs smooth at 60 fps, there are still a lot of things that has to be done before the first Chapter is complete, the other coders are doing a good job too I suppose. ;)

I can say that we have been working almost every day, more or less, and that Xfixium has joined the project. -He is working with the engine just like our other coders are.

So, we have gotten some new engine stuff ready, but mostly we are redoing a few minor things for faster performance and less bugs (+ easier coding in the future).
I am working on refining current maps and making the final maps for the Prologue and Chapter 1. Gameplay video will be added when we have a few more enemies, however, updated screenshots may come anytime. :)

This game has caught my attention. It makes me think that I should start a 2d game or find someone making one so i can get something done. The music was AWESOME! and the idea doesn't sound bad.

I wanna be a part of the community! So if you guys need ideas for enemies or boss fights let me know. I don't have any way to support physically but i'm mentally available.

You can see that the mountains are better and much cleaner now

(http://i.imgur.com/plTGr.png)

(http://i.imgur.com/dqssw.png)

Eastern Aurelian will be the area with lots of mountains and fun while the western will be more of flat plains with more skypits, however; both will have two chapters connected and lots of secrets will be hidden.

There isn't a lot of new areas to show because we are polishing and working on the engine still.

The 'pond' actually is a hole in the ground with the sky beneath. It's easier to 'read' (visually) when the sky backdrop is animated (as in-game).

The update screenshots look beautiful as always - like you could just stand in place and enjoy the world rather than move around through it. It's really immersive and it makes the game that much more appealing. Good luck with the new areas after you get your engine polished!

The idea was actually by Yoshimi, and a guy called Joe123. Back in 2010 (http://www.purezc.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=44571) they started this game smaller and in ZC, with the same surreal setting and the world taking place in the dreamland / skyworld Aurelia. However, this project was later cancelled due to inactivity.

When I started working with Yoshimi, in 2012. -I was working with Time Walker, but with the lack of a good story and lack of interest we started to talk about renewing EoA again, with a better platform and new ideas. We made some concept art and Yoshimi brought the lore he had and improved it and when we had most of the stuff planned out we decided to start working with it.

Echoes of Aurelia was a concept that I really liked, and something I probably will keep working on as long as I have a team that helps me.
So yeah, the idea started in 2010 where it was cancelled and then renewed. As stated in the main topic.

Two of our coders have been very busy for a few months. I and Rayo are still working on it often.

I want to make a trailer or any kind of gameplay footage, but the software wasn't working as It should when I tried it last time. I might return with new screenies however If anyone is interested. Prologue and Chapter 1 have very much completed, yet things have to be done In order to finish them. Whenever we have active coders, we will push for a playable demo.

Skyforest Shrine, the first main dungeon of the game. To reach the Skyforest Shrine, Link has to make his way through the Forgotten Grove. In order to do so, the aid of the forest spirits has to be summoned, as anyone who travels the Forgotten Grove without guidance will get lost. The Forgotten Grove lies deep within the Whispering Woods.

The dungeon has a forest and wind theme, true to it's name. It's a floating temple built long ago that nowadays is inhabited by monsters. Especially the peahat enemy is a prominent resident of the Skyforest Shrine.
Puzzles mainly focus on the use of explosives, bomb flowers for the most part. When Link obtains the dungeon treasure, the bomb bag, he will be able to solve puzzles that formerly seemed impossible.

The endboss of the dungeon is the giant Peahat.

I don't know why, but alot of the tiles remind me of Pokemon Ruby I used to own.  Maybe it's the roundness of the tiles.  Zelda games usually have pretty straight angles for the tiles. 90 and 45 degree angles.  Not saying it's bad, but I would have to actually play the game myself to see how it would grow on me.

Not saying it's bad, but I just keep imagining some !@#$% popping up with a stupid exclamation point above their head when all Link wants to do is get to the next fairy fountain before fainting.

^Like

Anyway, It's a good look. I love how you guys managed to make the world look alive by use of realistic shapes and varying sizes of stuff. It isn't at all bland and the designs really fit the music according to the trailer. And about the music, it is VERY relaxing, don't know if that was intended. Much of it sounds like village music and reminds me for some reason of Brave Fencer Musashi even though it's nothing similar. Just sounds like RPG music I guess but with a Zeldic vibe.

Thanks for the support everyone! "Visual" game progress and planning/mapping continues, however coding has started to slow down. Freki has been very busy and inactive and we've lost connection with him for now.
We currently have one active coder, and one who is coding when he has free time from his main projects.

If anyone is interested in helping/joining, as anything, contact me via PM.

I had to post and tell you guys that I like this Zelda game more than any other 2D Zelda fan game I've ever seen (yes, "EVER"). The music is incredible, the atmosphere is awesome, the engine looks like it's coming along very well, and the world already looks pretty vast and also perfectly designed imo and the details with rain, snow, tree leaves casting a shadow that gives the impression the wind is moving them, etc. - it's all very beautiful. As I was watching that trailer, I was actually saying stuff out loud, like, "dang", "wow", "shoot", "it's still going?! O,O" and "holy mudder chunkin waffle fries!". And that last one sounds gross, but it just randomly came out... ok, that sounds even more gross... uhh, I just have strange ways of voicing excitement when being in awe of something truly epic. Don't kill me guys, but I like this better than any OoT2D I've seen. :o As I said above, this is my favorite 2D Zelda fan game ever. The EoA team wins. /fanboy rant

Just figured I'd quote that so other people would see it (because my post went on a new page). Unfortunately, I can't help. I'd love to, but I have to withhold myself because my own projects will never see the light of day if I don't have enough self control in this area. XD

Thank you for the overwhelming support, everybody. I am really glad you like our game!

So I suppose most of you would like to try out the game yourselves. We are doing our best to get a demo out as soon as possible, but I am afraid I can not give you a definate date.
I can, however, tell you what the demo would most likely contain! 'Chapter 1: The Sheltering Forest' covers most of the Whispering Woods island which includes the Tidal Forest, the Forgotten Grove and the Skyforst Shrine (first dungeon) among other places. I am not sure whether the 'Prologue: Nightfall' will be featured in the first release of EoA, though. I guess that depends on how soon we want to get the demo out.

On that note, I might as well explain how the plot in EoA progresses. As you can probably tell from the above, we have organized EoA in 'chapters', pretty much. Naturally, you can revisit all the areas of previous chapters at any time. A chapter usually ends with Link learning another part of the Echoes of Aurelia (the song that is played at the very end of the trailer, btw!) and learning his next objective. EoA consits of five chapters and the prologue. I suppose the conclusion will be presented in form of a short Credits cutscene at the end of the game.

The original plan for EoA was to release a new 'demo' of the game each time one chapter is finished. This would mean that you get to play the game while it's being developed more or less. I'm not sure whether that still is the plan, but it seemed like a solid concept to me back when I suggested it.

Edit: I might as well post some screenshots, I suppose. :) The first one shows a part of Reliaton, Aurelia's central village. Do you recongnize the house? It was drawn by some pixel artist (I don't have the name available right now, sorry!) who has kindly given us permission to use his graphics in EoA. The second screen shows Link just having arrived in the Quiet Mists.

Here's an update explaining one of the features added, and a sneak peak of the upcoming dungeon in Chapter II: The Insightful Ice.

Dungeon sneak peek:  Skyforest Shrine & Cave of Ice.

(I'm sorry you missed the miniboss fight.)

Feature: Seeds & Planting:

Here's a mockup image of the planting system. You can find the seeds of various types in chests hidden around the world, and then bring them to their corresponding soil. As shown in the image, you have to pour water or let it rain on the soil after planting the seed, and wait a night for the seed to grow into its plant.
Each plant has its own use, such as the Tidal Plant in this picture that naturally grows in the Tidal Forest. Which has the ability to supply infinite water.
There are currently 10 planned seed, some of them grow into collectible items such as Heartplant and Bombflower.

Menu has been worked on for a few days, It is currently functional in-game with an opening/closing effect and the item page.
The tabs are still missing a headline, the second tab is almost complete.

Here's the menu showing every item in Echoes of Aurelia.
Equipment such as Swords and Shields are on the quest status page, along with dreamshards/heart pieces plus the four notes of Echoes of Aurelia and other quest items.

It seems just a tad too generic, imo. I'd like to see some kind of detail in the border and/or a more defined theme, like some kind of wing-like or cloud/floaty border design and the headline would be surrounded by a bigger design having more detail and being different but staying with the same theme, of course. Zelda games have gone with a map texture style with serrated edges, also stone tablet with hieroglyphic-type marks to make up a border, etc. Of course, they always had a theme that lined up with the game. For example, Wind Waker used a sort of palm leaf style that fit well with the theme of islands. The current style does fit well with the game, as it feels clean/refreshing/air-like, but it just doesn't have quite enough detail. I guess my advice is to "expand the detail" on the theme idea that you already have going there. You might want to check out the Skyward Sword inventory graphics design (excluding the layout design, of course, since that is made for motion control and such). That seems like it would be fitting inspiration for this.

I think the layout is awesome, it's just the graphical design that could use some more detail.

Hi everybody!
It's been a while since someone updated this topic. Well, soo I have to update it. ;)
I hope there were no rumors about that this game has been cancelled. During the past few months we were often busy and one of our coders didn't report us. So we couldn't release a demo to the beginning of the year. But we try to be done until this year's NCFC. Okay, what's new you may ask? We will update this topic with the new stuff - Yes, there are new things. I go through the whole engine updating old code and fixing a lot of bugs. Probably there will be some engine videos soon. These are two new things that have been implemented, working bombplants and creative pathfinding for some npc's:

Hmm, just looking at the title screen I think it would look better if the words ZELDA was given a sort of glassy 3D semi transparent look. I think that'd look really nice with the cloudy background.

By the way, if you had to give a percent, about how much would you say this game is completed core wise?

Hey, we are now on Fantendo! The coherent plot will be written on our website later, too. Thanks to Sheik for writing it. If you want to read it now, here (http://fantendo.wikia.com/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Echoes_of_Aurelia) it is.

Quote
By the way, if you had to give a percent, about how much would you say this game is completed core wise?

Well, the game has 5 chapters + 1 extra. After each demo we have done 1/5 = 0.2 = 20% of the game.
Of course we did more stuff for oncoming demos, but I will ignore that. Now it's version 0.17, so yeah...about 3% until you can play it. ;)

Oh, yeah. Here some new screens if you haven't seen those on Facebook:

I can't wait.

Bombs are finally finished! You can pick them up, throw and even place them. Using a bomb, it will create black smoke and detonate after a while.
Here a sneak peek, of course the upper features are included in bombplants as well:

Are you guys retaining any of the old map concepts from the Zelda Classic version of EoA?  :huh:

Yeah, kind of. More like the general ideas, though. Little of the actual layout.

Just wondering, when is a playable demo coming out?  Your team has had this posted here at ZFGC since June2012 but no demo?

:<

Looks like a really beautiful 2D Zelda game.  I'm just the kind of player that has to "feel" the game in real-time to make better judgement than just pictures and videos(blame the bad games in the last decade from real publishers lol).

I just find it a little weird that no demos have been released yet.  Are you guys waiting for NCFC 2013 in November?

Sadly, we won't get finished until NCFC 2013 in November. I don't think that we will participate this year.
I just can assure you that I won't abandon this game. And the reasons for the slow progress have already been written.

Good games need time.

Asking for a test isn't rushing anything, it's just hard to judge it with only images since there are alot of technical parts of a game that you can discern from just images like flow, collisons, interactions etc, though if they don't think they don't want to post a test then It's not like we are forcing them too.

That's what Blizzard said about Diablo III and Realms about Duke Nukem Forver.

Just messing with you.  In the end, it is your fan game.  However, teasing teasing teasing without some kind of tech demo isn't very fun.  :P

I, personally, would like to feel how your combat system is.  You just telling me or showing videos means nothing.  At some point, you will need you combat system tested by someone other than your team as well as other features in your game.  Not trying to rush you, but a Tech Demo using just your game engine could be done that removes all story aspects and just allows the player to "feel" out your game.

Like I said, it's your fan game.  If you feel you need until the end of time, take the time until then.  I am sure our spiritual being(s) will enjoy it. xD

:)

Happy new Year,

I've tested that demo a little and wanne give some feedback ;-)

+ beautifully sprited custom graphics on the overworld, just like shown on those screenshots.
   They look like they belong there and some of them are nice extensions of existing graphics
   ( the long branches, the custom cliffs, stones and different types of chests )
   The new variations of sprites like the dialogs, clouds, heartbushes and items ( Dreamshard ) are just the same quality as the
   original sprites.
+ the gameplay feels good enough for an early test demo, i only wondered a little about the diagonal walking/fighting
+ the soundtrack was just about the right feel and quality of an original game
= in the name selection screen add the notice of the controls (select letter / erase letter with *** )
= maybe an option to have the default "Link" name would be nice, like it is in the originals/other rpgs
= it seems odd at first that you hold the bomb with A/D but you lay it down/throw with W
= maybe add a main menu option for the screen size?
= gray out / delete the language options if there isnt any other language yet
- minor noticed is that the "dialog graphic" of the shield is round and the shield itself is not, it seems kinda odd
- the spawning of the cavebats was a little sudden and to near to the player
- the music in the house stopped in the time it took to look for the controls
- The octorocks walked through the sky ( on the upper right corner of the level, near the ladder )

most of the negative (-) feedbacks are not that great of a deal at all, they are to be expected in a rushed techdemo of an unfinished game, the overall quality of the demo is great. The throwback of the old man is nice,  but i hope you change the location of the enemies or the cave in the later game since you have to walk through the enemies to get your sword. Maybe the moving clouds could wait a little while longer at their end-locations so the player won't fall down, the puzzle was to use them for taking the chest and hitting the switch not the loss of a heart and wait for the platform to come back ;-)
the neutral(=) feedbacks are just kind of suggestions and you made me do positive(+) feedback on your graphics :D ( i almost never do that on a fangame )

keep up the good work!

Thanks for the feedback! We are aware of and have fixed a few bugs already.
For everyone not knowing, this was just an engine/tech demo, and It is nowhere close to what the original game will play like. But hope you had fun testing it!

I'm hoping to release more from the actual game in the future, because the original game will have it's own unique world.
Thanks for playing!

Nice demo! It's gone a long way since I last saw it feels. Also, thanks for the credits, though my username is martijndh instead of martjindh. XD

Going by the style of dotyue:
+ Nice steady framerate
+ Nice graphics / music
+ I really like the small touches like the multible directional sprites used when carrying skelton heads around. It really shows effort put in.
= Swords don't interact with pots and such. I've gotten accustomed to this being possible because of my own game and Link between Worlds, though Alttp for instance did not have this. Never played MC so I'm unsure how it's handled in that game.
= The bats appeared rather close to the character. Maybe set there triggering distance a little further away.
= Throwing bushes against octorocs I felt did not always register. I did not test exstensively, but when the bush I throw was near to the ground it seemed to hit the enemy once out of three attempts. I know how hard it is to get this right so a = rather then a -.
- Dying let's you keep everything you had. I was able to re-get the sword and bombs.
- Walking movement felt a little sluggish. Maybe make it a few procent faster.
- Repeat sword collisions don't always register after you hit an enemy. Maybe the enemy has a invulnerable phase, but I did not visibly notice such a thing so it comes of as weird.
- Menu interaction felt a little bit sluggish. Feel free to up the animations or room framerate

Last time I helped out with coding the itemmenu, but stopped because it looked to become way more work then intented. While I do not have the time to help code a secondary project right now I could help you translate to dutch if you think that'd be an fun inclusion. No counter service required.

Might you switch around the item set on X to make the sword set to X instead? In GC era Zelda games you would have the items set to X & Y which were closer to the locations of Y and B on an Xbox controller. Not to mention, X is the standard attack button on nearly all Xbox action games.

Even though that's true, the controls look like it was meant to be like Nintendo's, where B is the sword, and A is the action button.

Congratulations Germany, you've cup!
For this reason, there is an improved version of our engine demo including better bomb handling, a moving camera in cutscenes, much more intelligent octoroks, the ability to stab with your sword and the support of all foreign accents/umlauts etc...featuring the German translation of the demo.

So here is the link. Actually the same link as above, but I will post it again :D

Okay like i've said i had no time and the bug report took the little time away xD

first a bug were sometimes the shield is misplaced (attached screenshot1)

sooo a suggestion since you fixed the  second dialog already :P
you should give the fairy a lightsource since even link has one... and maybe a more smooth light for the night since it just looks cut out (shot2)

but like before an overall good quality
Title: Re: [Engine Demo] tLoZ: Echoes of Aurelia
Post by: Rayo on July 15, 2014, 10:32:35 pm
I got the first bug too, just with bombs. But it's hard to fix it because I don't know what the player needs to do in order that this bug cames.
And I would give the fairy a lightsource but Elfin is actually an enchanted butterfly (http://fantendo.wikia.com/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Echoes_of_Aurelia) and not a fairy. I just thought Elfin was a fairy and coded a fairy. :P
Anyway, I will discuss with Gonken if we should give Elfin a lightsource. In the original demo you will receive the lantern before the first night so it won't be that dark.

i got it too when falling into the river without bombs, maybe its when you do something and then use the shield

well enchanted or not... if a human emits more light than a fairy then thats just wrong xD

I gave Elfin a light source. Plus, I found out why the shield/bomb/obstacle bug happened. If yout get hurt while holding your sword and your sword is charged then it happens.
With this information I fixed the bug and reuploaded the engine demo.
I also fixed the bug that allows Link to cut all when he is holding his sword, he just can stab destroyable obstacles now and hurt enemies.

Okay the shield bug seems fixed i couldn't replicate it... but hello its me again nitpicking ;)

1st, Sign outside of Link's house

Hallo Link!

and a suggestion on the namescreen at the beginning...
maybe you should use enter to first go to the end button and again to press end. since you do the same in original zelda games with the start button

And yay i find the ENTER mechanic in the name menu so much smoother now :)

Du hast eine Traumscherbe gefunden! Das ist eins von vielen Teilen, die über ganz Aurelia zerbrochen worden sind. Der Eremit am Friedhof könnte daran sehr interessiert sein.
Here i suggest a changing of text the "teile" part sounds wrong since its a shard and you dont say in a zelda game stuff like "Ey heb das Teil mal auf da"

Code: [Select]
Du hast eine Traumscherbe gefunden! Sie ist eine von vielen Splittern, die über ganz Aurelia verteilt wurden. Der Erimit am Friedhof könnte daran sehr interessiert sein
in english that would be (i guess)

Code: [Select]
You found a Dreamshard! It is one of many pieces, which were shattered all over Aurelia. The Hermit at the graveyard could be very interested in this
but my english could be better i guess ^^;

and why do you tell the player exactly who to find? examples from past game would be (Minish Cap) You cant go through without "sword skills" and then somewhere you  find or hear from the swordschool, go there and then you can pass through... so maybe tell just that there is someone at the graveyard who could be interested in that shard?

okay last one and i think i',m through with the german translation of your engine demo xD
here is the english and german a little different so i guess i try here my luck... the biggest thing on the old text in german was the "werfen"

Quote
You got the Slingshot! Use this projectile-shooting weapon to fling Deku Seeds at your foes! Assign this item to a button on the item menu.

Code: [Select]
Du hast eine Schleuder erhalten! Benutze diese Fernkampfwaffe um Deku-Kerne auf deine Feinde zu feuern! Weise dieses Item einen Knopf im Itemmenü zu.
I would have used "Steinschleuder" or "Zwille" but official Zelda games have "Schleuder" in common. then, the projectile-shooting could have been used 1:1 as "Projektil schießende" and for fling i would have used "schleudern" but since we already have it as the itemname i used "feuern" instead.

so now i'm through with your textfile :P

edit:

okay some stuf i've noticed

Octorocks:
1. Their stones are supposed to be glitchy looking white?
2. You can kill them with a shield, throwing back their projectiles?
3. they kill themselfs with shooting stones! O.o

edit2:
just played a link between worlds and have a possible other heartcontainer text for you

Your project is awesome! :P

Here are my few suggestions:

I translated your demo into French, the ini file is attached to my post :P
You should ask for the default language when starting the game for the first time, and also ask for the kind of keyboard the player is using too, to set the default buttons accordingly.

You're doing a great job, I'm looking forward the next release!
Title: Re: [Engine Demo] tLoZ: Echoes of Aurelia
Post by: Rayo on July 18, 2014, 04:58:21 pm
Oh, you both have mentioned a lot. So where should I start...hmm first of all I will give you both a karma boost :)

@dotyue
I will fix the text. And as for the octoroks they actually don't spit rocks, but water.
The fact, that it is possible to throw back their projectiles with a shield is a bit illogical and should be fixed, that's right. Shooting themselves as well. :P

@Lzard
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
First I find a french lets play (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hA8M5K0JTeE) of our demo and now a translator. I just need these phrases translated to be finished:
(The translation should be not longer than "choose a language")

Quote
[mainmenu]
mainmenu_start=Press Enter
mainmenu_head1=choose a file
mainmenu_head2=choose a language
mainmenu_head3=copy a file
mainmenu_head4=erase a file
mainmenu_head5=copy to where
mainmenu_head6=enter a name
mainmenu_option1=language
mainmenu_option2=copy
mainmenu_option3=erase

I'm going to fix all what you have said. We have just decided to make the night more blueish - This will be so awesome :)
I'm planning to check the system language as default language when someone plays the game for the first time. Maybe I do little Java configuration program to set up keyboard/sound settings and so on.

Echoes of Aurelia is looking for dungeon designers!
We already have plans for the dungeons, but we need one (or more) to help us with layout and design!
This includes helping out with the layout of the dungeon, and any input on enemies, bosses, items and other secrets. However, mapping the dungeon will still be done by our mapper.

With this we are planning to remake our current Skyforest Shrine (first dungeon) for our upcoming demo of chapter one!

If you are interested, shoot us a message or email.

Here you go :P

mainmenu_start=Appuyez sur Entrée
mainmenu_head1=sélectionnez un fichier
mainmenu_head2=sélectionnez une langue
mainmenu_head3=copier un fichier
mainmenu_head4=effacer un fichier
mainmenu_head5=où copier
mainmenu_head6=entrez un nom
mainmenu_option1=langue

I tried to make them as short as I could, but they might still be too long... I can make the too long ones shorter by cuting a word, if it is needed (like "sélect. un fichier").

If you haven't read it, read it two posts over my post.

So I fixed and updated all what you have said except to make the night more blueish - It takes a while since I'm still trying to do a smooth transition.
Also, the game checks your system language after the first start and the default language is your system language.

Still awesome :P

For some reason, Chrome is blocking the zip file. I had to save it to my Dropbox to get it. I scanned it with Avast and it found nothing, though.

You should add a little animation when a textbox appears, if you can. Got this idea by reading the sign :D
If you can't, a little pause before the sign's text appear should be fine.

Here are the last translations:
Quote
"Loading..." -> "Chargement..."
"New Quest Log" -> "Nouveau Journal" (actually, it should be "Nouveau Journal de Quête", but I'm not sure it would fit (or even "Journal Quête" as it is in WWHD, though it isn't gramatically right...))
"END" (when naming a quest log) -> "FIN"
"ITEMS" -> "INVENTAIRE"
I just thought, you should add variables that indicates the keys in the translations files (so that "By default, press 'F' to use." would become "Press [key=sword] to use", for example).

I sent a message to Gonken about the dungeon designer job, but no answer so far :P

Keep up the good work!  :)

Tested the new build and I found literary NO bugs/translation faults :)

the octorocks dont hurt themselfs anymore and their water looks like water :D

now a wishlist :P xD

- if you defend against an ocotorock he shoots at you until you have enough and just get hurt to kill it... maybe you should add an attack delay after a few shots so that the player has a chance of killing him without running into his projectile

- the switch-bridge, shouldnt it first sound the secret-sfx and then unfold? or at the same time?

-bombs from the bomb bag have to be thrown by 'w' like the bomb flower... could the button were the bomb bag is used to lay down a bomb?
(just tested the method of a link between worlds as reference: link lifts with 'A' and lays the bag-bombs down with the assigned button for the bomb (Y/X) )

- sign cutting plx?

I agree with not mentioning specifically who may be interested in the shards. One of the greatest feelings in older Zelda games that doesn't seem to be in the more recent ones was exploration. You would find something and it would be up to the player to find out who or what it is used for. You might change it to simply say...

Someone could be very interested in this.

New link, Gonken needs to update the main post:

okay, good to know your opinions. Right now I am working with Martijn on a game for the game jam, but next month I will continue on EoA. We will probably get some supporters who want to help on coding/design.

Woah.  I thought this was a one man project!! :o I didn't know there was a full team.  Good job! :) It's so hard in my opinion to work over the internet.  I just can't collab with people.  You guys are doing an amazing job.

Thank you so much for the engine demo.  The game is very solid so far!! ^-^

I have one complaint and it's just the sword.  Normally, every Zelda games shows the sword in the HUD so we won't forget what button It is.  Obviously, it's not a big a deal.  Just something I've noticed. ;o

While it's a decent suggestion, you might want to do your research before claiming that every Zelda game shows the sword button in the HUD.  Link to the Past and Adventure of Link off the top of my head do not have this. At that point you may as well assume the user is dumb and put every single possible action on the screen and flood it.

Haven't played this, but it looks like it's following the game boy convention of equipping the sword to an item button.

Oh rightttt.  I totally forgot that they don't show the sword in those two games!!! xD

I'd kept checking on this project every few months or so for a long time now, eager to watch this project progress. I always thought it looked really nice and couldn't wait to see more. I just played the demo a couple days ago and holy cow, it was really beautiful. I loved playing it a lot. I did have to download it on some out of date browser that's not one of the major ones to download it though. Chrome thought it was really dangerous.

I'm replaying it again just now to get a second fresh experience. It's so nice to see that background image for the title screen. It's really beautiful and matches the feel of the game so well. It's almost like it was painted. The small design for each file in the selection screen is cute and pretty. I also really love the animation shown when copying files.

For some reason, you can't place bombs when you're standing standing against a wall of some sort; the only option you have with bombs is to throw them.

It'd be so cool to see a full-fledged clock as part of the final game's GUI. It's really beautiful and I like seeing how things change as time passes. By the way, is the time supposed to continue progressing while you're in the menu or when there is text? I'm not entirely sure if it changing during text, but I can see it during the menu.

It's really cool to see all the things I can cut down. There's the usual grass, small bushes.. But then I can cut these trees! The cut down stumps look really great and natural! Also, it's great to see the heart flowers from Skyward Sword! It's fantastic to see a place where hearts can grow indefinitely. I love how easy it is to cut everything! It feels so good here. Also, it's really cool that even the slingshot seeds interact with the bombs!

----

Unless the game is the top window the music won't loop. Whenever it reaches the end where it should loop, it just stops; it's done this while I was typing now. When you're on the pause menu, the music won't even start back up until you leave the pause menu.

It might be good to either completely automatically pause the music when the window isn't on top or make absolutely sure the music loops do work when on a lower window. I noticed the game itself pauses but the music does not when this is done. This happens in every location.

----

Big edit plus...

Would it possibly be a good idea to create a wiki page for the game on ZeldaWiki since it has its own fan game section? I noticed before that The Shadowgazer had one way back and it felt like it was way further back in development than this.

Also, at some point will we be able to download the entire soundtrack for the game?

That should be so because there is no place to put the bomb.

At the moment there is a clock in debug mode but it should not be in the HUD. Maybe in the menu or something like that. During the menu and cutscenes the time should not continue but inside houses yes.

Yes I will try to fix that I will probably need to find an extension since Game Maker 8.1 has no function to check whether the window is active or not.

There is a page on fantendo (http://fantendo.wikia.com/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Echoes_of_Aurelia) and on wikia (http://zelda.wikia.com/wiki/Fan_games) Echoes of Aurelia is mentioned too. But ok, I will do also a wiki page on Zelda Wiki one day.

If we don't encrypt the soundtrack and the composer says it is ok the OST will be in the music folder of the game.

Its fangames like this that get me excited!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE IT OMFG I LOVE IT

only a few things I noticed from the demo,
When I pushed the block in the cave it did not have a sfx
In the area where you walk on the clouds (right below the green rupee area) I fell off the tiny moving cloud platform and the player re-spawned right on the ledge and kept falling off until I died, I could not break the loop he just kept falling off the ledge, re-spawn, fall again, re-spawn until death

overall everything is solid and feels damn near like a legit Zelda game, keep up the amazing work!

Hi there – I just finished playing the demo release and it is totally great, I can’t wait to see more!

I had a quick question about how the game defines the Xbox Controllers. The reason I ask is because I have two controllers and when I start the game it inverts the settings (Controller 1 becomes Controller 2 and Controller 2 becomes Controller 1), does it pick up controllers based on the USB port they are plugged into? Oh BTW I’m using Windows XP so not sure if that is the culprit.

One more thing, if the controller is plugged in then pressing “Enter” to start the game on the keyboard doesn’t work – I guess that is by design?

Once again really great demo!

please do not rent-a-mod, but instead if you feel a rule violation has occurred use the "Report to moderator" functionality in the post.

That being said (and technically your observation on gravedigging is correct), I think the inquiry into the project status is okay given that Rayo, someone who had worked on the project has been active within the last month of time (and I think this project is really cool). I can't check to see if if the ZC forums topic on the project is up-to-date right now, but I would recommend checking there if you are able as well.

The thread has been achieved on the PureZC forums due to being in a sub-forum that was in need of achieving. I think only members can access it. That said, there has been less activity there.

There are some new things on their Facebook page, but even that hasn't been active for a while now.

This project hasn't been touched for a pretty long time. I doubt we will finish it. I would say yes, it is cancelled.

However I don't want to lose the engine. I am currently working on a very special project using the same engine.
It will not be a 'causal' fan game. If I have at least a playable version of the project I will inform you.
Therefore, look forward for the new and probably last Zelda project I will publish here on ZFGC in the nearly future.
Echoes of Aurelia has been a pretty cool project for me, it got a lot of attention. I thank you all for your support.

This was seriously looking amazing...

If its not much to ask, It would be cool to play what you already had done for the game, even though it is cancelled...
It would also be great to see all the sprite sheets used, there are seriously really good sprites in this project.

I also have to say it was a really great project.
I loved all those soundtracks you made, the tiles looked great and the demo was just "wow".
It was that just that MC feeling but still a new and unique experience.

So.. It's really sad to hear this is chancelled, even though I have expected it because of the lack of updates.
I am looking forward to your new project!
