Title: [request] custom alttp-styled broken wall
Post by: Martijn dh on November 04, 2011, 07:15:06 pm
It's been a while but I have another custom sprite request: broken wall sprites.
They are for a boss fight in the next demo so I'll be adding them to the game as soon as somebody is able to help me.

The idea is that you fight the boss and the entire room gets trashed during that battle. So the light getting destroyed is a the right idea.
I will still leave the request open for more variations in case someone believes they can do equally good or better. More options is always better and it will make it look more believable.

EDIT: The current result

For believability, you might consider littering pieces of broken wall around the room, lay broken lights underneath the torches, etc. and/or create an effect of some dust dislodging and falling from the ceiling.

I agree. Programming it won't be a problem. I'm currently looking for graphics to use.

I'll take what I can get, basicly I'm looking for alternative destroyed wall pieces for variation. Havin for instance a completely destroyed pillar would be awesome. Wreck this room as good as you can please :) And like nabeshin suggested, some rumble flying/laying about would help sell it.Rumble coming from the ceiling is also a really good suggestion. I would be able to use such an animation for in the desert dungeon as well. Actually, I have been looking for something like that for a while now. Really loving that idea as well.

Couldn't you try making some "filters" or layers that are placed at random as the room crumbles?  Like, instead of a full tileset if broken/crumbling walls and lights, you could make a group of 4 or so of cracks and whatnot as overlays that are chosen by random to make it seem more realistic instead of scripted.

Make a grid and as the room "crumbles" you can have each grid painted over by a crack overlay that is chosen from a tileset of 4 or so at random.

Sorry if I am being redundant...that's just how I would do it.

That would work if there was no distinct source for the destruction, like an earthquake. My idea is not scripted though but real-time.

Possible spoilers: My miniboss will be a soldier swinging a big-ass flail. After swinging it around for about 4 times it then lunges the flail towards the player. Whatever wall is hit is destroyed. So it is very directed destruction which the player can mostly control if they wanted to. I already have the basic mechanic done. No it is just a matter of having the right graphics.
