As I am sure many of you already knew, Nintendo is developing a sequel to Super Mario Galaxy, calling it Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Creative, I know XD)

Here is the trailer:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iO10_IbDUBU" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iO10_IbDUBU</a>

In an interview, Shigeru Miyamoto said that the game will be less plot-oriented than the first. The first game wasn't unique plot-oriented than any other Mario game. It was "Save the princess" once again. True, Rosalina did have background story (which I loved), but nothing more plot worthy. And now this game will have LESS of that. It's safe to say that Princess Peach will, once again, be kidnapped.
This irks me very much. When I play a game, I want to be captivated by the plot as well as maintaining fun value. Mario games have the potential for this. Miyamoto fears that plot will take away the fun value. Personally, when there is a plot, I feel much more connected to the game (Rosalina's storybook and the sheer fun of SMG are in harmony). When there is NO plot, I feel as if what I am doing in the game is pointless, because there is nothing being solved by going through this fun trouble.

What do you guys think?
Personally, I REALLY hope there is more plot than Miyamoto is letting on to believe.

while I agree that I want games to have a deep in plot, Iwant that for Zeldas, Metroids and Star Fox. With Mario Games I want to run and jump, I want to stop gommbas and to throw Koopa Shells about. I really don't play Marios for the plot. After all, the plot hasnt really changed since Mario Bros.

I don't get why everyone wants to "fix" what's not broken... Sorry but these games were never meant for a decent plot. There's never been a decent plot for them. Frankly, they're not very story driven games to begin with. If you want one of those, go play an RPG :x

Mario is not meant for a plot.  Zelda and Metroid are meant for a plot.  When I play Mario, I want to do nothing more than jump on !@#$%, throw turtle shells and see !@#$% that doesn't make ANY sense, yet you accept it as normal, because hey, it's Mario!

Or certain first person shooters. I'm referring to games like the Half-Life series or Bioshock of course.

Never was that big on Mario Galaxy. I haven't even finished the first one yet.
It's all about Super Mario on N64.

Mario Galaxy had a plot? The only long running Nintendo series with anything resembling a plot is Zelda, and even that gets pretty flaky at times...I mean, who the pays attention to Mario's excuse plots? XD

IMO 90% of the time this is how the game should be, unless you're "playing a movie" so to speak (IE MGS series, Final Fantasy 10, etc)

Miyamoto fears that plot will take away the plot.
I'm still confuse as to what this means.

Nah Miyamoto's afraid of making good games again :x Although I don't have any beef against Mario Galaxy or anything, it was a fun game, but lately Shigeru's run of games have been... sub-par.

He was probably meaning the plot isn't so in-depth. Had to establish new characters in Galaxy 1, so there was back story and tie-ins to the mushroom kingdom that needed to be explained. The story will probably be more like Mario 64 (game's story was based on getting a !@#$% cake.)

Two words: Roguelike Wait, that's one word...d'oh.

Basic story tends to be "At the bottom of this dungeon lies the McGuffin of Godhood, go down and get it". A similar premise was followed by a rather famous RPG...Diagro? Diabro? Diamo? Something like that ;D

At the end of the day plot is an extra, something which can make a game inherently much more awesome by being added or an idiot plot can subtract from a good game by unbelievable amounts.

If you are not a big fan of story in a Mario game then don't focus on it.

The problem comes from cutscenes and dialogue.  When you don't care about the story, that stuff just wastes time.  I get so impatient playing Ocarina of Time because of all the cutscenes at the beginning of the game, plus after every dungeon; and that's not even a story-heavy game.

As Shefali just mentioned; it's impossible not to focus on it in the newer games :P They shove it down your throat. Mario Galaxy was probably the worst at that :x
