Discussion / The Patron.
« on: August 09, 2008, 02:01:38 am »
I haven't worked on a project in quite some time. The last I contributed to was AoDC's Oracle of Life, in which I managed all things graphics, maps, etc. Before that was The Legend of ZFGC, a popular and ambitious project with a lot of documentation, but not a whole lot of developing. And before that, well, who cares :P. Basically, over the years, I've observed the better fan games and projects out there and I've realised exactly what it takes to design a good one... talent, skill, dedication, passion, motivation and love. And over time I've been secretly practicing my artistic and spriting abilities. I'm also taking a Software Design course at school to familiarise myself with the concepts, before I actually take a decent look into GML. Basically, I intend to head this project by myself, with perhaps some assistance from my real life friend, who would compose original tracks for this original idea.

You might have noticed the website in my profile. Then again, you might not have, and it's probably better that way because guests and members can see few boards anyway. This place is basically where I'm documenting and planning everything for my project, where my real life friends can access and contribute.

So why haven't I shown off anything yet, or even mentioned what genre the project will be? Easy, because I don't want to get you started in case I decide to quit or hold off this project. Because then everyone will like "nyurrr, these projects always die, nyurr, nyurr, ZFGC sux." Basically, I post this because I want you to know that I am working on something. It may be quite some time before I show off something else.

I guess, if anything, I'll leave you with this half-finished attempt at a logo:

Now motivate me, dammit ;p.

So, what's a game you love (I mean really love) that no one else really loves? And, what's a game you hate (I mean really hate) that no one else hates?

I'd have to say I really love Balloon Fight for NES, because I'm so good at it and I'm obsessed with the concept. It seems to be terribly unpopular with everyone else though. And I love Snowboard Kids and Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

As for hate, I really didn't like Metroid Prime: Hunters on the DS, and I really didn't like Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. I'd say both had uncomfortable and inconvenient controls, and a lot of the concepts in MGS2 really threw me off.

Feedback / Custom Member Title?
« on: July 26, 2008, 12:24:11 am »
I've seen in a couple of members running around with both custom member titles (text displayed under username) and personal text (text displayed under avatar). I guess here's an example, if whatever reason my explanation wasn't good enough.

As you can see, Kyubi has "LOLZ ITEMS 4TehWIN" displayed under his username (the custom member title) and "POKOCHO" displayed under his avatar (the personal text). Thing is, I've been looking all over my profile controls and I haven't found this area for entering in my custom member title. Where the hell is it?

Entertainment / Metal Gear Solid.
« on: July 21, 2008, 08:25:38 am »
I don't know if we have a Metal Gear topic... we probably do, but I'm making this one now for my own purposes :P. Basically, I've been playing through MGS3 recently due to the lack of MGS4 on my 360, and I just have some questions regarding Metal Gear Solid. Here we are.

1. I own Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, but I wish I got Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence instead, due to the extra features and all that. My question is, what am I missing out on? I'm aware I'm missing out on the old Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 games, but what about deleted cutscenes or other stuff that should have been in the main game? Am I missing out on anything like that?

2. What's MGS4 like?

3. Is it worth hunting down a copy of Metal Gear Solid on PS1 or Twin Snakes on GameCube?

Thanks.

Seeings as these are the least important passwords in our lives, and no one will easily be able to make use of these passwords to send masses of pr0n to your PC (unless of course people you know irl go to this forum), we may as well take it like men (and women) and reveal these insignificant passwords.

The password for my home computer is dAISY. My friend set this password after a round of co-op in Double Dash!! years ago, like when it was released (HI I'M DAISY HI I'M DAISY HI I'M DAI-omfg stfu >_>) and he forgot to turn off caps lock when he set it. Took us a while to figure out what he had done, even when he told us what the password was :P.

And the password for me to log on to my school network is an9826. But we share those passwords around at school anyway, because some people have certain games >_____>.

How about you?

I think that there’s probably one other element to it, and that’s that our view of how we use E3 has changed. For a very long time, E3 was an event where — and certainly Nintendo included — catered specifically to the core gamer. Now we look at more … an opportunity for us to introduce new concepts and new types of play that we intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now.

So while attending an E3 event like this, they might be given the impression that Nintendo is no longer focusing on the games that appeal to the core gamer, in fact we’re still working on many of those titles, but it’s just not the type of event where we’ll be showcasing that anymore.

Source: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25710005/

I think it's a fair enough thing to say. I mean, look at what Nintendo brought to E3 last year... Wii Fit. That was it. If HAL hadn't brought along their Brawl demo we all would have been super pissed like this year. Fact is, Shiggy did mention some good games to interviewers when they got it out of him - namely Zelda, Pikmin, Mario Galaxy 2 and New Bros. 2. Shigeru and Nintendo just didn't see the point in revealing it at an event full of silly reporters.

Wii Sports Resort and Wii Music are just two games in Nintendo's cauldron of goodies. Two games that are extremely casual. Everything else is sure to have some old-fashioned Nintendo Seal of Quality.

Thank !@#$% god. At least we know there's a new Mario and new Zelda about somewhere. The question is whether or not Nintendo are going to announce it before they put it on the shelf.

Okay. There's something very familiar about all of this. I feel like I've heard of all of this before. It's like... a cartoon-version of me. Which I can implement into games. I can't recall, but I know I've heard of it before. Oh! And what else! The Xbox interface, or "Xbox Experience" will take on some kind of windowed interface! Oh my, how very original of you Microsoft. I'm sure the hardcore gamers, the market in which you own most of will be delighted to make use of these features.

Graphics / My artwork.
« on: July 08, 2008, 10:55:07 am »

I entered this into my school exhibition.

FAQ:

Who is Dean Richards?

He is a fictional character. I have never lost a friend or anything, and I'm sure there are people out there who can relate to the emotion in this artwork more than I can.

What's that thing in the middle?

I used a little bit too much lead and the flash on the camera is reflecting the light :P. It's actually a projector, projecting onto the black board.

So why is the power cord a snake and a worm?

SYMBOLISM.

You're not depressed are you? Are you sure you don't need help?

I don't usually draw like this. I prefer drawing scenery. Happy things :P. In this artwork... one thing led to another. And this is what I finished with.

What does that say?

If you need to ask what something says, ask.

I just did.

Yeah, but YOU don't exist.

stfu

no u

Are you sure you don't need help?

Yes.

Yes as in "yes please"?

So what should I look for when viewing this artwork?

Don't focus on the physical representations but rather the emotion you feel when you view it.

We just switched roles.

I realise that.

Entertainment / I can't possibly comprehend what my PS2 is doing.
« on: July 07, 2008, 06:54:00 am »
Okay, so my PS2 has some history...

Basically, my brother had it in his ute for a year or so. He had connected up a small screen in there as well, so he could... play the PS2 while he was driving? I don't know. It was very illegal, let me tell you. Either way, that's where it was and I wasn't going to go into his ute just to play MGS3 or FFX.

So we got it out of his ute a few days ago because my sister won SingStar in some radio contest and obviously she wanted to play it. We tried to set up but we discovered it didn't actually work. The PS2 was a brick. To be honest, I wasn't surprised and I didn't really mind that much because I needed a reason to get a PS3 anyway.

But then my sister discovered that power ran through to the PS2 when the console sat at a certain angle. I was like "lolk". But it turns out she was actually right:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92jF4cmXHuA

So yeah. Now my PS2 is sitting on my shelf with a broken PS2 controller being used as a support. It works, it's extremely bizarre, it's probably not safe - but I don't really mind. I can finally finish Shadow of the Colossus.

Moral to the story? I don't really know. Nor was I aware we were meant to have morals in our stories.

Debates / Censorship in art.
« on: July 07, 2008, 02:04:21 am »
Are you for or against censorship in artworks?

It's become quite an issue in Australia recently, with one of our most respected photography artists, Bill Henson, exhibiting photos of a naked 13-year-old girl. The media deemed the artworks as unnecessarily pornographic with themes of pedophilia, even though Bill Henson's intention was to capture the "crossroads" of childhood and adulthood, with nudity used as a means of portraying the "sincere truth".

So these events got me thinking about censorship in art, and I've decided that the perceptions are far too narrow-minded as far as porn in art is concerned. I think it all comes down to the intention of the artist... whether or not they wish to provoke eroticism or some other emotion.

Entertainment / Has anyone earned EVERYTHING in Brawl?
« on: July 07, 2008, 01:39:30 am »
I was just looking through the challenges, and there was one for "collecting 500 trophies"...

I'm sitting there and I'm all like o____o;

Melee had what? Less than 300 trophies? That wasn't too hard. Brawl wants me to get OVER 500? How many are there anyway? I don't even want to think about stickers...

And then there's the music CDs, which appear so rarely on stages.

I'm gonna have to try pretty hard >.>

Feedback / About the signature limits...
« on: July 05, 2008, 02:46:46 am »
Can I just say to all you big men with big connections, that I may as well win the award for the Slowest Internet Connection at ZFGC, with a speed that may as well be dial-up. And, I'll have you know, that I have had no trouble in the past loading images greater than 200 pixels, or larger than 300kb. You'll find that images that are "heavy" on the kbs don't slow down the loading of the text in the posts, or the loading of the page for that matter, and I rarely struggle to load any page on ZFGC ever, as much as I struggle to load say, a page at IGN or a movie at YouTube. And to be honest, this new rule regarding signature restrictions hasn't made the slightest difference for my connection, and you (the staff) may want to consider revising this rule.

I create this thread for the input of the other dial-uppers on the forum, should there be any, as well as anyone who has been even slightly bothered by this rule.

Entertainment / The Wii's Summer Line-Up.
« on: June 22, 2008, 12:38:50 am »
Let's take a look what the Wii has to offer over the next three months (according to IGN), shall we?

Rock Band: Special Edition
Top Spin 3
Alone in the Dark
WALL-E
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon
SNK Arcade Classics: Volume 1
We Love Golf!
Order Up!
MLB Power Pros 2008
Madden NFL '09 All-Play
Mario Super Sluggers
Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility
Tiger Woods PGA Tour '09 All-Play
Sam & Max: Season One
LEGO Batman: The Videogame
Monster Lab
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
de Blob
Samba de Amigo

Right. Hm.

What kind of list is that?

Actually, it's not a bad list, really. But at the same time, it is. There are some games on that list that have the potential to score really well. Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Top Spin, We Love Golf!, Mario Sluggers, Sam & Max, LEGO Batman, Star Wars, de Blob and Samba de Amigo at least have the potential to score in the 8s. But is anyone even looking forward to those games? The only games there that are actually exclusive, or not remakes, are We Love Golf!, de Blob, Mario Sluggers and Samba de Amigo. But is anyone even looking forward to those games? My point, the casuals seem to have a nice selection with the above list (what with Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Tiger Woods, Madden and so on) but the core gamers have NOTHING in that list. The Nintendo fanboy has Mario Sluggers, yippee.

Now, such a cynical topic wouldn't be complete with the Xbox 360 list, would it?

Baja: Edge of Control
Battlefield: Bad Company
Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
Infinite Undiscovery
LEGO Batman: The Videogame
Madden NFL 09
Mercenaries 2: World in Flames
Midnight Club: Los Angeles
NCAA Football 09
NHL 09
Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution
Soulcalibur IV
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Tales of Vesperia
TNA iMPACT!
Tom Clancy's HAWX
Too Human
Unreal Tournament III
World in Conflict: Soviet Assault

Blah. What a good line-up. There's something for everyone in that list, not just casual gamers. Fighting gamers can get their hands on Soul Calibur IV, FPS lovers will have UT3 and Battlefield, RPG freaks have got Infinite Undiscovery and Tales of Vesperia, and racing fanatics will have Midnight Club to look forward to. Not to mention the sports and strategy games there. Oh, and Too Human for guys like me who love a good action-adventure.

What's Nintendo and the third-parties doing? Why do the next three months on Wii look so bleak? You know that when games like Order Up! and Wall-E make the list, something is definitely wrong. I can't see myself getting anything on the Wii list, except maybe de Blob because I like to support Australian developers, and Samba de Amigo depending on the reviews (I'd get GH but Aerosmith sucks).

Where on 360 I'll most definitely be picking up Soulcalibur IV (very hyped for that one) and I'm considering Too Human as I type.

Fingers crossed Nintendo and third-parties will show off something decent at E3, so the holiday season on Wii will have something to compete with Gears 2.

Other Discussion / Funny story from school.
« on: June 20, 2008, 10:34:46 am »
So, my school was running our so-called "showcase" which is basically just a musical talent show type thing where all the music and drama kids perform their stuff for parents, teachers and students, and what not. Basically, all of the singers and speakers were given a headset-type microphone which they were expected to turn off when their act was over, or, otherwise, whatever they said afterwards would be projected over the entire audience.

So, during one of the piano performances, one of the guys in the grade above mine, completely oblivious to the fact that his microphone was still on, was speaking backstage, and for some reason decided to say:

"I'm going to rape everyone in the audience with my giant !@#$%."

I think he actually made a couple of women cry, and he got a big talking-to from the principal and the music coordinator. Not sure if he's getting suspended or something. Oh well, I lol'd.

Other Discussion / Déjà vu.
« on: June 12, 2008, 09:30:41 am »
Why doesn't anyone else seem to think déjà vu isn't at all strange?

It's like... it happens occasionally, you're with someone, or you even say it yourself. It just comes out of nowhere: "Hrm, déjà vu", and a then a response: "Hrm." It's like... no one at all finds that déjà vu is weird, they just take it as it comes, and they don't think about how bizarre, or even how scary it is.

I understand scientists have looked into it, and some have even been able to spur déjà vu using hypnotism. But none of the theories really give anything remotely close to a concrete answer as to what the hell déjà vu is or what it is doing with your head. What if you're mind is trying to fool you? What if whatever it is you're seeing actually happened before?

BE SCARED DAMNIT.
