Why do people tend to cancel Zelda fan games?

It all comes down to them not being bothered, they find something they can't do or are too stressed out, so they think 'Why bother?' and Quit.

Over ambitious projects, that take too long to finish.

They forget about them and don't return to them. That was almost my case with Bloodlines; I started working on it again recently.

It is because they run into challenges and get too frustrated with them.  They also tend to try to do the project all on their own with little thought put into the actual project in regard to things such as a story.  It thus becomes mostly pointless to continue and because the person making them is at a computer, the chance of them being used to being lazy in some regard makes them quit.

I think its a few things.
Most of them appear to be first time programmers, who don't realize how big a task it is.
A lot seem to post on a forum (such as this one) before they've made a substantial amount of progress so get demoralized by people saying "this looks terrible"
Too many try and remake the 3D Zelda games, which means they'd have to figure out how to convert it from 2 to 3D.
A lot seem to come up against one challenge and the give up.

I think the issue is Zelda fan games... are just not the best base to go with.

A lot of people don't even know how to properly plan out a zelda game in the first place... My biggest annoyance is naming conventions. IMO If you see a Zelda fan game with an ambiguous name that doesn't involve an item in the game, then it's going to fail quick and hard.

You cant have a game named (making one up) "Zelda: The Gods Wrath! Rwar" and think people will take it seriously. It's out of place. It Zelda game named like that would never get released because of the current naming conventions for Zelda games. Been that way since lttp (The Triforce of the Gods; starting the "Zelda titles named after items" trend).

I think those fail because theres no possible way they could feel like a zelda game.

lol, one of the items that I was going to have in one of my first Zelda game attempts was called the "Moon Bassoon".  The title of the game was "The Legend of Zelda: The Blue Moon" though, but yeah, cool or decent titles cannot salvage progress.

They never realize what they're getting themselves into, and are always in over their heads. It becomes too hard, people stop showing interest, or they simply just can't manage to keep it up. Life gets in the way, video games get in the way, or most often interest just fades. They'll get new ideas and start new projects, or reimagine their own project and start over, never getting anywhere. Most fan games are learning experiences, and the farther you get into them the more you realize how poorly made and obsolete the beginning of the game is. Everyone likes to think that they can be the one to make an amazing, ambitious Zelda fan game, and nobody ever thinks about exactly how much that entails. They're like a newborn child who wants to run before they can even stand.

I think it's the fact that they lose interest in making the game and/or it's because they don't have proper motivation.

Lack of interest.
Lack of fan base.
Lack of sprites.
Lack of staff.

The list goes on.
My continuation:
Lack of skills
Lack of effort
Lack of concentration
Lack of comman sense. (Target the noobs who try to remake LoZ:OoT!  Except Dampe, and whoever atleast did GB-OoT, those two demo's might be the only good OoT remakes i've seen.)
Lack of the ability of patience
Lack of Inspiration.

Basically, they assume it will be a piece of cake and storyline, sprites, sounds, etc. will fall into place as you go in. Hey, who needs a magic bar system, I'll cross that bridge when I get there! Well, you end up skipping so many bridges that...something happens...and...something. Anyway, the project gets dull and boring.

I think it should be up to Nintendo to make Zelda games...We can make indie games. (unless you really are talented, and then be my guest).
