So, does that mean that I could make this in Unity, so long as I didn't use any included assets? And could other users submit things made in Game Maker? Or are you talking strictly real languages here?

Feel free to use what you wish. As long as you don't use a library or pre-built feature designed for special-fx (eg. Don't use a pre-existing particle system) then its ok.

I do have questions: Is it supposed to be a playable demo?

I was about to ask that >_>
Also, we release an EXE, right? I'm very reluctant on releasing the source.

The reason this rule exists is so you don't use someone else's library and compile claiming it to be your own :p

MMF2 may cost $200, but it doesn't mean you have to pay $200 for it ;)

and Lynk, what could you POSSIBLY have that you don't want released to the admins here? :/ Stop acting important.

I might enter, I dunno, I'll talk to you about some specifics later, Infinitus.

Can we use graphics for the effects that aren't ours, so only the code and everything else needs to be original?

You can use whatever graphics you like, though if they don't belong to you you may be marked down if they contribute a lot towards the overal effect.

I'm in on one thing: can we use real-time graphics? I have some skill with the Unreal Engine and would love to make a little something after my exams are over. I can make a movie of it as well as a map that people with UT2004 can play.
Title: Re: Contest #4: Eye-Candy
Post by: Infinitus on May 01, 2008, 04:56:20 pm
Hum, thats getting on the complex side, unreal has a great deal if prebuilt effects systems within it, using them would probably be unfair on other users. But you can have a try if you want, its up to the judges to decide if they think your use is fair or not.

Title: Re: Contest #4: Eye-Candy

o.0

I'm noticing a pattern here... everyone's kinda over complicating the contests; gotta take it for face value--- whatever this threads starting post says is the requirements is the requirements in whole

:P

The point is to come up with eye candy however you can; if you feel you need to use premade stuff, obviously it's going to look bad for you, but if you can make it work, then make it work- the point is to just make the best eye candy you can period :P

Rofl.. Doesn't make a difference to me. My stuff will be 100% custom and that's that. The eyecandy display may not be the best, but I'll try my best to make the engine at least decent xD.

The only things i see myself using is GM, the spire sys, and GML.
If I add lighting, I may have to use particles, but I have a lot of other better craps planned.

Title: Re: Contest #4: Eye-Candy

Just make an effect, the judges will judge it based on its merits, obviously if you use premade stuff you will get lower points. Just leave it as that.

Ah what the hell, put me down. I might not finish but I'll at least attempt. After I finish up my finals I'll need some project. I could release mine as a screensaver too ;D I'm thinking on making something that works with whatever's on the screen when it's run, and possibly setting it up as a screen saver.

In other news, holy !@#$% cpp still visits the forums? >___>

Well so far I have one simple thing... I have much bigger plans but I'm not sure I can really complete them. When I get a good chance (With any luck monday) I intend to code something that might impress myself. Now to figure out which of a few ideas to go through with... >_>

EDIT: (mostly note to self) Finished the first screen saver... not complex but a few people might like it. Keeping it under wraps for now but it's in a zip file... and 6kb >_>

EDIT AGAIN: Dependant on how tonight goes that may be all from me. Some things went wrong today that may prevent me from having the time expected to finish this program. Not sure though, we'll see.

We've got until tomorrow, right? I have a few bugs I need to work out -- I put my new one on the Asus eee to show my girlfriend and it shat a brick. It shouldn't take too long to fix but it's coming.
Depends on your timezone really, I don't mind to much about a 1 day margin though. Go for it.

I'll send soon

Remember:
J : Twili on/off
K : Rain on/off
The Zelda engine is a bit buggy, however the Rain And Twili Effects are perfectly fine.
If you dig in the GM6, It is posible to change whether an object get twili'd or not. You can also uncomment some of the included code (and add some of your own) to enable different rain splatter drops.

cpp, if you decide to update your program, I recommend adding multi-monitor support as well as an options dialog which allows you to customize the resolution the fractal is generated at.. then stretched for the full screen.  IF you generate a lower-res fractal it will render much faster than currently.
Title: Re: Contest #4: Eye-Candy
Post by: The MAZZTer on May 14, 2008, 04:49:17 am
Nope, only shows on one of my monitors here.

http://x.mzzt.net/0174.jpg

It's hard to get a good screen cap since everything goes away once you move the mouse :p

And you would have to make changes, but basically you'd draw your image onto a System.Drawing.Bitmap with one of the 32-bit formats (so you have 8-bit alpha) then use the Transform stuff to resize it to the screen res, and then capture the desktop and draw your bitmap right on top of that new image (the alpha channel will automatically blend everything nicely).

I should try my hand at a .NET screensaver maybe.  Need a good idea for it though, I don't wanna do a simple "make the screen black and draw stuff".

Voting is being restarted, and will run for the next 7 days. The reason being is that some members have attempted to bias the voting by unfair tactics (mass voting, and intentionally mass-voting negativly in all competition entitries, and intentionally mass-voting positively in their own topics).

For the moment I've decided not to disqualify anyone over this, but further attempts will result in immediate disqualification. And may even result in a temporary ban from the forums (Staff are paying for prizes you know, we don't take kindly to this kind of fraud).

Not pointing any fingers at anybody, I'm just saying

I have a question regarding this. Do you want everyone who entered to vote for their own entries, or not at all? I see it as being unfair if some do and others don't.

You are given 1 vote for each project (including your own), your welcome to do what you want with that, as long as you vote honestly (rather than trying to bias the results). What I don't like is people who are mass-voting (using dup accounts / asking friends / etc) negatively on other people's projects, and positively on their own.

All the three others arent mine, well exept for "linkw(204)", but I havent logged int it for a year.
