Maybe a flash of red or something. At the moment, you spurt blood. The characters are made of 2 sections, so having "attacked" frames would double our current sheet size.

Looks pretty awesome, sweet sprites, zombies are the best, etc.

When blood gets on the escalator it should disappear for a bit then reappear at the bottom again.

About a week into development...

This is a nice trailer and just showing one week into development?! Are you guys planning on having ctf mode and stuff like that? Because just going around shooting up zombies can only be fun for so long. This game is looking amazing though. Oh, and the flamethrower looks dang sweet.  XD
Title: Re: Zombie Grinder Trailer 1
Post by: DJvenom on July 06, 2009, 12:42:26 am
It's not gonna have any sort of versus. The closest thing to a CTF variant would probably be get past zombies to get item X and return to starting point. Right now the gameplay is going to be objective driven campaigns, and a few "save the uninfected" maps (in the style of Zombies ate my neighbors) as well as survival maps (single player)... At least that's what I personally have planned :P Infini also has tons of ideas, so there will most likely be at least 2x as many gameplay variants ;)

For anyone who cares, I uploaded an old development build of this game as its unlikely most of you will ever get to play the 2D version of the game.

This is an old development build though, so I want to make something clear; DONT ASK FOR SUPPORT OR REPORT BUGS, I don't care. This version of the game isn't even being developed anymore, its all 3d from now on :3.

3D, kind of lame. The art style had something really special.

If you use sprites for players still, a fixed view, and only have the environment being 3D, I'd forgive you.

That might be your plan but I didn't read the thread. :D

You have to be joking <_<;;

The art style would remain unchanged... It'd just be in 3d instead of low res 2d... <_<;; Gameplay is going to remain the same, graphics are just better, and scalable.

Trees and bushes look too fluorescent, try toning it down a bit, the name tags and text boxes(the one when you get soda not the chat log) don't fit with the rest of the style.

Then if it is night and raining why not give it a blue-ish tone really small one, and make your own rain anim ;) right now it looks exactly like lttp not sure if it's the same.

I'm really loving the graphics, I can see your influence in lttp grass.

btw! my antivirus is blocking binaryphoenix images.

Speed varies based on health and perks. They move more than fast enough.

Development is a mix of BlitzMax and C.

Been taking advantage of the SDK. :P
Pretty much just trying things out.
Don't understand how the BGM works because when I try to add it to the map both via the settings OR the sound source it still plays the default music.
But I haven't really come across many issues other than this and zombies seem to spawn in a different layer than incorporated.
Still this game is great fun and it will be fantastic when it's done!

- BGM only works with tracker files for the time being. Were you trying to use a different format? It should be set in the settings. Make sure you not using a gamemode / map script that overrides it though.

- Zombies will normally only spawn on layer 3 (the middle one) - This is where ALL of your objects (apart from decoration stuff) should be positioned, otherwise you will get all kinds of wierd problems.

Thanks, that solves a lot of layer issues. And I'll try out the BGM later, I'm hoping that the Wave gametype doesn't override the music? And I tried out both an mp3 file and a wav. Neither worked on the Wave or Deathmatch gametype. Can I check if a gametype's music overrides?

As I said, BGM is tracker-format only, we use .it / .xm / etc, we don't use sample based formats (wav, mp3, ogg, etc) for bgm.

Just needed to install libxpm over here on x64 Linux. If you want, I can become a package maintainer for you on the AUR so people can install this thing on ArchLinux. I'd be happy to do so even on other distros that I don't use.

Anyways, screenshots!
http://i.imgur.com/1vpnQ.png
http://i.imgur.com/7Xur8.png[

At first the audio driver wasn't playing nice with PulseAudio. Another thing noted was, the binary wasn't marked as an executable. Both easy fixes. First one required a reboot, second one just required "chmod +x".. yeah. Good work, Tim. :) Everything works great!

EDIT: This forum needs to learn2scaleimages

EDIT#2: Oh, and just to clarify, I am on a 64-bit distro.

EDIT #3:
Quote
Zombie Grinder: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.15, BuildID[sha1]=0xa3debb3a7183c76e558382144c4893c9f62fbb91, stripped
This'll definitely run on a BSD with the Linux compatibility layer enabled. ;p

What was the issue with pulseaudio / how did you fix?
Title: Re: [Demo] Zombie Grinder

What was the issue with pulseaudio / how did you fix?

It just couldn't bind a context to the sound card. Who knows, I haven't been able to reproduce it after restarting the game. Well, I did try changing the sound driver when it wasn't working in the options menu, but I put it back to the default before I restarted the game. And just to be 100% sure, I just ran the game once to see if the bug would happen again.. and no, it didn't. So who the heck knows. ;p In the first screenshot, I think you might be able to see my terminal showing openAL freaking out on the first attempt.

EDIT: Correction, the problem fell with alsa not playing nice, not openal. Sorry. But I wouldn't worry about it if I were you as like I said, the problem hasn't been reproduced since that "one" attempt.

I've had a similar problem before. Odd and annoying to pinpoint D:

Also sound driver does jack all on linux, it uses a different audio system in linux (was somewhat of a heck by me to fix things, I'll add the other drivers back in shortly)

Shop or bought in-game :P. Same as all the other weapons in this game. Contemplating making the laser cannon a donator reward tho.

To be completely honest, when Zombie Grinder first came out here on ZFGC, I thought it was cool, but roughly about midway through it's development I thought it was pretty lame (GASP! :o) . BUT, the latest video and information I read has completely changed my mind(HUZZAH!). I thought it'd be boring, endless grinding of zombies, but, while it's mostly about grinding zombies, it's far from boring and there is a lot more to it than "just" shooting zombies. And the multiplayer is really what sells it for me.

Well done, TwinDrills! ... is that name inspired by Gurren Lagann by any chance? The drills that pierce the heavens!... and hell! ...? Ya gotta admit, that would be epic man stuff.

Btw, if there isn't enough pizza to go around, I'll settle for a delicious chocolatey cookie. ;3

I can work on a Japanese localization for it if you'd like

Let me know if you're interested (JP can be some extra work because of all the characters so)

My friend and I have been playing and having a good time.  I have a suggestion though, that both of us thought would be a good idea control wise.  This seems like the sort of game that would benefit from the "two d-pad" setup.  Where one "d-pad" moves the character, and the other aims the shots, rather than having to hold shift or something.  For the keyboard controls, the (default) buttons for this could be WASD for movement and the arrowkeys for firing, or vice versa.  Q and E for switching between weapons; then your hand doesn't have to go very far.

The current control scheme sort of reminds me of the console ports of Smash TV.  While I think those were fine for the time, the controls were still cumbersome compared to the dual-joystick setup of the arcade version.

Also, could the skill tree not be so zoomed in?  Seeing a bit more of it at once would feel a bit better, so you can see what you're trying to get to easier.

Check out the input settings, there is already an option to rebind to a standard twin-stick setup.
