I used to play Puzzle Pirates. It is fun when you subscribe to it but not so much when it is over. I currently play WoW and I don't know what makes it good. I like it a lot.
Over? How can it ever get finished? It's a game where you always have something else to do, not just one goal.  :)

Hah! QTF. :D

No but seriously, WoW is appreciated by many people because it's so big, and not very tedious (talking about the "big"/serious MMORPGs here) unlike most other of its kind. And I don't think it's just because the name Warcraft is in the title, seriously... 8 million people wouldn't play a game only because it says Warcraft.

And now with The Burning Crusade, you don't have to play as much to become good either. Sure, you'll have to spend more time if you don't play as much, but you won't have to sit through six-hour raids not being able to leave until 0am to get gear. The several new 5-man/10-man instances with saving progress really eased the raiding part up. It was the raiding that took me down at least, but I'm not planning to go back. Getting stuck in that game really hurts your real-life sometimes if you aren't careful (I know I wasn't).

But yeah, play it once in a while and you'll have no trouble at all. And don't listen to the people saying you have to play it forever to get good. Not anymore.

I really don't see a point for playing WoW. Like you, I've played it before, and I got tired of it right quick and in a hurry. I prefer Silkroad. It has better visuals, a better experience system, and it's based off of real life. Oh, and it's free.
That video is older than time itself.

Silkroad looks good, I'll look into it.

World of WarCraft is so loved and played because of the legends that previous WarCraft game has set up.
I remember playing on Battle.net and some people constantly chatting about WarCraft becoming a RPG or a Action type of game.
People and friends in our circle who also played WarCraft talked about WarCraft becoming that sort of game.

On parts, WoW has such a long history portrayed by their series of WarCraft games and Campaign Maps, the desire to relive and create your own legend through a race you'd like to be, becoming a part of either side's history; Alliance or Horde.
The RPers (Role Players), as they are commonly referred to, like to indulge themselves in a environment where they can interact with other players in a community. It's all part of having fun (I like to RP sometimes :D).

On the gameplay side, WoW (from my view), was quite the most easiest and fun MMO I've ever played.
The battle system is as real as it could get, leaving other players frustrated, wanting revenge or bloodthirsty and out for more (I love to PVP.)
The level/experience system in WoW is actually one of the fastest systems I've ever been on. In a total gameplay time, I got to level 60 in matter or 13 days.
WoW also has other intriguing ideas such as the Quest system (I know other MMOs also have quests, but WoW has a whole range of different quests you can play into), Raid system (It used to be annoying because most of it consisted of more than 20 people raiding at the same time, resulting in slow, time-consuming progress of the dungeons), Faction system, Honor Ranking System (the new system is reasonable, whence the old system required the player to play 24/7 with PVP groups), and... etc, because I have to get my breakfast.

IMO; I think WoW is so popular because of the so many possibilities it gives you through their diversity of Race, just the right amount of Classes, the legends you could create through RP/PVP, and just for sheer fun of teamwork through Raids.

I liked it because I simply loved to fight, teamwork, have a little gaming fun with friends, and mostly due to my love for WarCraft.  8)

I played WoW for a while, but these days I don't have enough time to play it. I've got so many of my own projects to be working on; I spend more time creating and testing games than I do actually playing them. WoW has some appeal, but for a guy like me, it's just not flexible enough.

Ive never played WoW Never will either. I think people like it because it's 3D? Or something. I hate how caught up everybody is with 3d now days.

2D will always prevail! Tibia kicks the !@#$% out of WoW or guildwars, or any of these other online games out there. It's so underrated. So what if its 2d, and the graphics look a little strange. It's a funny perspective you have to get used to. The game itself is so well done.

Its so interactive for the player, you really have to get involved. Unlike other games you move only with the arrow keys, and your character stays in the center of the screen. It's like having a satellite camera fixed right on your character at all times. And you don't have to deal with all these equipment and inventory menus popping all over, everything is real life based. You need a container like a backpack or a bag, that has a certain amount of storage slots in it, which you can drag items into, or other containers to hold lots of things, as much as your capacity can hold (based on your level)

The PvP system is beyond anything else (at least it was) it's died out a little bit with some new features they added. But you would have to attack th  player or creature, then stand next to it and follow them around with the arrow keys to attack them (unless you have a long range weapon). Since everything is mapped on 32x32 tiles and you move one square at a time, you have to be strategic when you are running around in a battle with somebody, and use your surroundings to your advantage, like pillars, or statues and around corners, where you can block out their hits, or trap them. I can't even begin to explain the beauty of its design unless you have played for a long time and know it yourself. To use magics you have to increase your magic level by using magic, then you have to purchase spells from the shop, then in a spell book you will see all the spells you have purchased, and it has the actual spell written out. For instance: "Exura Vita" to heal you. So when you type out these words in the text box and say them out loud you will heal yourself. or say "Exevo Gran vis lux" will create an energy beam blast in front of you.  In order to use shops and stuff you literally have to walk up to an npc and type out "hi/hello/hey" (etc.) and they will greet you, then you can interact with them (well... their code) like "what do you sell?" or "buy mace". Instead of allowing multiple people to just walk up and talk with an npc by clicking them, its more realistic and involving. If somebody is speaking with the npc and you try to talk to it, they will say "please wait I am with a customer!" or other comments like that. So you actually have to wait in line lol.

It's just so much more involving and real time for the player, every action requires you to be more involved and literally do it. It really makes you feel like the characters in the game is who you are, rather then your friend is a person behind their computer screen. Games like this should be triumphing over WoW hardcore. The quest system, the guild system, the house system and banks, and depot, and guildhalls, pvp, party, is all superior. Plus its free, unless you want premium which is cheap as hell and not even needed, it just gives you a few cool features like better outfits and able to ride boats to certain islands free players cant, (which are few in number)

People pay so much for WoW and I wonder what it is that they are paying for. The graphics? Tibia has cool graphics you just have to get accustomed to the strange perspective, and before long you come to love them. I wouldn't want that game to look any other way. Better yet, you don't need a graphics card or tons of space on the computer.

This is probably the most nerd sounding post Ive ever made haha. But thats how I get when I talk about tibia. I feel like I gotta fight for its right to be on the top. I don't play it anymore, Haven't in so long since I quit. But it used to consume my life for years lol. I was going to post a cool youtube video I found of it here. But I think I won't lol. It wouldn't mean anything to anybody who has never been a tibia player like me or ricky. It would just look like some guys running around fighting with poor 2d graphics.

And it's just damn addicting.

I'm no WoW fan, but LOL, that was such a waste of space.  You try to prove that WoW isn't the king by taking some non-existant argument and disagreeing?

If you don't know why people like WoW, don't assume it's because "it's 3d".  That's the lamest thing I've ever heard in my life.  People like wow because its an entire interactive world, with millions of possibilities for customization.  They like getting together with friends and kickick ass.  They like fighting other people in true wits of skill, and fighting alongside friends.

It has almost nothing to do with the graphics.  Tibia is horrible in comparison, and I don't even like WoW.

Yeah, Tibia is so damn underrated. >_>
Tibia is much more interactive than any other MMORPG out there, and unless you have spent some hours with Tibia no one can understand it...
What pities me most is the community and the time it consumes (the time I don't have ;_;).
But whatever, since Tibia (my first MMORPG) I can't appreciate any other MMORPG, they just look so... boring. And I have already played: WoW, GuildWars, Ragnarok, Silkroad, MapleStory... they just look so boring, and, taking off Guildwars, I couldn't get past Level 8 on those...

Guild Wars isn't gay, it's a great game. It just has a different gameplay system than other MMOs, and it works well too.

The reply to your question is simple: marketing strategies. None of the MMORPG games have been advertised as well as WoW.

Advertised? I don't know, I thought it was more due to the commercialism (in its original meaning) of Blizzard's previous products.

Here in Australia, I really never saw much Advertisement on TV or the internet for WoW.

So what! I wanna get out! 'Cos there's so much out there! So many different people, living different lives! Incredibly good guys, bad guys... Folks completely different from us! It's one huge melting pot! See, it's not about success, dying in the streets, who's better, who's not! I just want to be a part of it! I realized that even if I've no connections, no talent, even if I'm one big loser, I want to use my hands and feet to think and move, to shape my own life! We can just die here or we can try, see what we've got!

I'm not gonna read the whole topic (^^;), but I wanted to voice my opinion on WoW. I played it for a little bit, and I didn't really like it. The battles were too fast-paced, the movement was kind of annoying, and the HUD was just UUUUUUGLY. There were a few things I liked about it but overall I thought it was just overrated more than anything. I'll stick to my FFXI ^_^

Played WoW at a mates house...didn't like it. found it boring. moved on.

Played Phantasy Star Online on the xbox. Liked it. Played more. loved the pick-up-and-play appeal it had. left for a few months. Came back with ease. Played more. Sold it with my xbox. Bought an Xbox 360. Bought Phantasy Star Universe on Xbox 360. Played it. Thought it was okay. Stopped for awhile. Came back after a few updates. Realised so much had been added, and it was so much more fun. Played more. Still play it.

What it has over other online games:
Pick-up and play. SO MANY MMO's seem to forget that a lot of people don't like to spend hours doing a quest, or a 'raid'. Instead, they like to pick it up, select an area, select a level group, create or join a party, and kill stuff. Don't want to do that?

Chat with the many people that always gather in the lobby areas. And like PSO, the appeal IS the chat. You meet nice people, have a nice chat with them while killing stuff, get their gamercard. Then go and play a game like Rainbow Six, invite that person, and have another fun game with them.

I like PSU because you don't HAVE to get addicted to it to play it and enjoy it.
