Question of what would be better...

So I'm adding cliff jumping in my game...what I've done is that if you touch the specific object you'll jump.
But then I tried doing this:
If you are standing in the object and press x you'll jump.
What you guys think it's better? just running to the object to jump or press x when close to the edge to jump?.
As for me I though it'll be better to press x else you'll jump even if you don't want to...

cuz is kind of 2d/rpg and if you can jump over everything at the beginning of the game it'll be kind of lame.
what I have is ledge jumping and the hookshot I also added jumping but I may not use it tho because I have the two I just mentioned and it will be kind of like a waste of space.

Either make it X to jump anywhere or make it autojump you at cliffs. A mixture is silly.

I agree, it should be an autojump when you come up to the cliffs, unless you want to make it if they don't do it right they fall and die.. :P

I agree, an autojump would be much better. By the way, great idea for a game.

I think it should be that, if you run toward it for 3 seconds, you autojump. Yeah, it's LttP-ish, but then again, it's one of the only ways I'd like to jump.

Yeh, same.
Pressing a button is fine in turn style rpgs, but where the game is action based its a distraction that doesnt make that much sense.
When you walk off a cliff, you expect to walk off a cliff - but just in case the user only wants to walk to the edge etc, just have a 1.2 second delaye before jumping off: The user has to be pushing in the direction of the cliff for the duration of this count.

Yeah, that's a good idea. You can make the cliff stop your movement for the first seconds (like when you use normal collision), and set a timer when you touch the cliff. If you stop colliding with the cliff or if you stop moving into its direction, the timer is reseted. If the timer reaches 3 seconds, the player jumps.
