The Legend of Zelda
The Hylian Phoenix

A Bermuda Production
By Robin, Joe and Nuvo

~~~
When a new danger rises from the darkness,
it's up to one boy to thwart the evil regime and
take control over the three relics, to restore
order to a world that is falling apart.
But with an even stronger dark force just
waiting to be uncovered...
is the sacrifice worth making, in order to save an
otherwise doomed kingdom?
~~~

The Hylian Phoenix is a game that takes place around 200 or so years after the events of Ocarina of Time, in a Hyrule that is already doomed from the get-go. While The Hylian Phoenix is still very much a Zelda game, it has a very dark story and feeling, and there's no shortage of a more adult graphical style. On his travels through Hyrule, Link may for example come across a ruined caravan that has been attacked and destroyed. There may be dead bodies still lying in their pools of blood. The music, which will be 100% custom written by Nuvo, with the occasional song by Nicklegends, will have a underlying tone of impending doom, and so will dialog in the game, especially towards the later parts of the game. The story is very important to The Hylian Phoenix, and while the game would still feature great gameplay without the story, we hope that it will only enhance the experience by dragging the player in emotionally. Along with this, dungeons will be scary, compared to the usual dungeons seen in Zelda games. Some will be worse than others, but the main idea is to make the player gasp for fresh air and sunlight as he emerges from the depths of each temple. While there is a lot of dungeons to tackle, most of the story will take place on the overworld, and hopefully this will help make the dungeons feel less like a routine. There is parts where you won't be entering another dungeon for hours, even though you could in theory find a side dungeon and crawl through it, if you really feel the need for some dungeon action.

If you haven't gotten it by now, The Hylian Phoenix will be huge. And I'm not just saying that. Just Hyrule Field alone will consist of five full maps, though each will have its own little feel to it. The first one you will ever set foot in will feel much like your usual Hyrule Field, while the second will have a more mountainous look to it, and so on. However, with an already long story, there's also the large number of side quests to dive into. And I'm not just talking about the usual "go get that item, then trade it with someone else" sort of side quests, though there will be one of those too. No, the side quests in The Hylian Phoenix will vary in length, but each and every one will have its own little story, and there is a few side quests that will take hours to complete. None of these will be required to do, though it will add a considerable number of hours to your game time, so even after you've finished the game, you still have a reason to go back and play some more.

Having Joe on the team as a scripter is probably one of those things, along with the music, that makes The Hylian Phoenix what it is. You will not find any old bosses in this game. Every single one will be custom made by Joe using his scripting abilities that are nothing less than amazing, and with Nuvo's also jaw-dropping tunes playing, the bosses really feel new and "THP'ish". Along with writing the code for the bosses, Joe also writes all the other scripts in the game, including items, events and... well, anything that needs to be scripted. This really helps giving the game that "official" feel that it has.

Articles
We've also been lucky enough to have had our game mentioned in the media twice.
Epic Battle Axe's Article
GameReactor's Article (Norwegian)
Not trying to advertise, but I thought it'd be cool to show that it's been mentioned by two rather major gaming websites :)

Additional information:
The game is being made in Zelda Classic, which I have heard doesn't have a super reputation over here, but please don't judge this game for that reason. Joe123, the programmer for the game, happens to be a ZC developer, which means that if we need to break its limits, he can, in theory, make that happen. For example, it is very likely that we're going to need more space for graphics and maps, which currently is limited in ZC. Other than this, if you've ever played a Zelda Classic quest before, you know they all mostly use Zelda 1 enemies and bosses. This is not the case with THP. All bosses, and many enemies have been custom scripted, along with items, subscreens and... pretty much all there is. It will be a full fledged Zelda game by its completion, and we are looking into ways of playing it without having to open up the Zelda Classic program first. So all in all, when it's done and released, most people won't even notice that it was made in ZC. That is, of course, if we don't jump over to a custom engine, which is something I've been wanting to do for a while. We'll see what happens.

Also, if you watch the trailer above, you'll notice teeny-tiny 16x16 Link. A few years back, when I last wrote about this game on these forums, someone also pointed that out to me, and that I should go with something bigger. I've finally gotten around to making a new Link set. It's not done yet, but here it is anyway:

Hopefully I'll be able to keep this thread up-to-date. I do have a pretty busy life, and I find it hard to keep focused with more than one forum at a time, but seeing as this is the only other forum I'm currently being active in, hopefully I'll be able to update it every now and then. Again, we'll see :P

So, thanks for reading, and I hope if you have any comments, suggestions or criticism, that you will mention it below. Especially criticism. Nothing is perfect, but at least we can do our very best to make it as good as possible, and to do that, we simply need to hear what people think. :)

Graphics / Here's a house. OMG house?! No wai!
« on: March 12, 2009, 01:00:18 pm »
A while ago, I made this house for use in my game: The Hylian Phoenix.
I haven't gotten to use it just yet though, as I'm working on some other projects... and I'd really like to see it in-use... so I thought: Why not?

http://users.sephiroth.ws/Migokalle/AkttH/house.png
The house has two floors, and features some railing from AlttP. (I was too lazy to make my own)

This was in fact made while I was pretty drunk. I spilled some cider on my laptop, which resulted in the loss of my precious wireless internet card. So therefore, I sat down and made some concepts, then I gave it texture.

There's a few small errors, like some perspective problems, but I don't think the average non-spriter is going to notice.

http://users.sephiroth.ws/Migokalle/AkttH/fountain.png
Along with the house, I made some other things, like a yet-to-be-finished fountain, (no water yet, sorry) and a few crates. The "Fed Ex" writing on them was actually a mistake at first, when a friend of mine (also a bit drunk) said "Aha, thai look laik fed ex!!! omgomg". I decided to make it a bit more clear about what it said, and volia (that how you say it? I should learn some French... cause it IS French, right? RIGHT?!).

You can get all this for UNDER 5 US Dollars! (The exact prize is: 0 US Dollars :O)

So, feel free to use it... all the tiles use the small 16 color palette included in the house.png.

I'd really like some feedback though. You can consider that as the prize, I guess. Haha.

Graphics / I'm offering my mapmaking
« on: September 21, 2008, 08:13:36 pm »
Hello men! And women... if that fits better for you :3

Aaaanyways, I just wanted to say that I'm offering my mapmaking to any serious game maker out there. Of course, not to ALL of em, haha. I mean, I've got a life too! (Woo me! Got it on ebay for 99.99$)

However, If you'd like to have me making your maps, there's several things you need to know:
I will only work for someone who can present me some previous work of them. (Finished or not)
I'm sorry to say this, but I'm not interested in working with someone who don't have any experience.
This is because when I make maps, I spend time with them, making them look perfect to my tastes. I wouldn't like a map of mine to be associated with a bad game.
Also, a big plus would be if you have a lot of ambition, and can tell me for certain that the game will be finished.
IMPORANT: Making the maps, should require no coding or scripting at my part. This is because, sadly, I don't know how. Neither can I learn, because I seem to have a problem with numbers and math :/
I'd like to be able to make my own game, all on my own, which is why I'm personally using Zelda Classic... but here I am, offering my map making to you, just in case you're interested.
I don't care what tool you use, as long as map making on my part aren't HYPER complicated.

So, if you're interested, here's a few of my own maps:
The Great Forest: http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2343/migomotm2il6.gif
Hyrule Field: http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/1404/migokalleci4.gif

That's it for now. Thanks!

Discussion / Unamed elder Scrolls like game, anyone?
« on: July 14, 2008, 05:55:15 pm »
Hello Mr. Community!
For some time now, I've been wanting to make a "The Elder Scrolls" like game. To be more exact, a Oblivion type game.
What stops me, you say? Skill. I've got no programming skills at all, which is why I usually use Zelda Classic for my games.
I am, however, a skilled map maker and story-writer.

See, my idea, is making a game that works exactly like Oblivion, but everything else should be new, and it wouldn't even take place in the Elder Scrolls universe.

So, what I'd need, is a skilled programmer, that has played Oblivion. I guess we'd be using whatever program the programmer wants to, as long as it's easy enough to make maps with it.
I don't know GameMaker too well, but I'm willing to learn, as long as it doesen't involve any scripting on my side, cause I really just can't do that. Let's not discuss why I can't, and instead talk about my request/idea.

I can take care of graphics and mapmaking, along with storywriting. Sure, if you enjoy doing these things, I won't say no to you helping in on that too.
Now, the idea I've got, is:
There is no "real" main quest line. You, the player, have the world at your feet. You start off, able to go almost anywhere, getting quests from people, exploring caves and dungeons, hunting animals... other "everyday life" of an adventurer.
Like, if you come across an abandoned mansion, you can enter and grab the treasures you may find, along with looking for clues on WHY it's abandoned, by reading books and notes etc.
It should also be in top down Zelda perspective, obviously.
I guess I could work with 3D mapmaking, but you know, it's not a must... but I WOULD like to try that out sometime, so if you want to do this (and if you can), I'm all open for it.

So, basically, the main story, would be whatever you make it.
You make your own objective... whether it's completing all the quests available, hunting for the biggest treasures in the world, collecting the best weapons, becoming the wealthiest man in the land and so on.

So, does anyone want to be in on this project?
Remember, you have to be skilled with a program like gamemaker.
It's also a BIG plus if you've played Oblivion, or even any of the Elder Scrolls titles.

Here's a map that I've made, using ZC though. If you want, we could use these graphics, but I'm open for other graphics aswell.

Zelda Projects / [WIP][DEMO]The Legend of Zelda: The Hylian Phoenix
« on: July 14, 2008, 03:37:45 pm »
The Legend of Zelda
The Hylian Phoenix

The Hylian Phoenix centers around the story of Link, a boy who lives in the Celdena Highlands, which is a neighboring land of Hyrule, only divided by a huge forest called "The Great Forest". Here he lives with his uncle, Earl.
One day, Earl asks Link to climb down to the village at the foot of the small mountain they live on, to buy some food.
Link soon discovers that the shop in the village doesen't have any food left, and is forced to go the long way to Hyrule Castle town, since the road to Celdena Castle Town is blocked off at the moment. To go to Hyrule, Link has to find his way through a huge forest.
When Link finally set his foot on Hyrule Field for the first time in his life, a storm is raging Hyrule. Link can see smoke in the distant, and it looks like Hyrule Castle.
Why is Hyrule Castle under attack?
Why, on this very day that Link was going to buy food, does this happen?
And HOW will Link get his food now? xD

Anyways, that's the basic intro of the quest. I did cut out alot of things from it though, like the tons of quests he has to do while he's still in the village and forest.
There's three dungeons in the forest, that Link has to plow through before he even gets a sword. These dungeons include a cave, a temple and an old mansion where Link has to sneak past a group of thieves. So there's one action based dungeon, one puzzle based one and one stealth based one.
But these aren't the "main" dungeons. The real story doesen't start before he sets foot in Hyrule Field.

The game is being built in Zelda Classic. I hear that most of you doesen't like ZC, but hey... I do. And I'm not a skilled programmer... but I'm a skilled map maker.
Now, don't you think that the game will be limited to the usual zelda 1 mechanics.
It will use tons of scripts, made by a very good friend of mine.

The game will be very big and lengthy. I'm aiming at around 60 hours of gameplay, but you know, a skilled player might be able to run through it faster than that.
It will include big areas, like Hyrule Field, which is divided into four main parts.
Hyrule Caslte Town, will be a very big, sprawling city, with tons of houses and shops. It will hold many side-quests, both big and small.
The castle will also be very big. It will also act as the first "Main dungeon", but after that, it will be fully explorable, as long as you have the items to get past the hinders.
It will also have a few rooms, where you can select a few unique weapons. But you can only carry one of them at once, so if you want to have another one, you have to trade in the one you've got on you. Though, this does NOT interfere with your normal items like the sword and shield, bombs and so on.

The game will include many known Zelda places and landmarks, but it will also boast a wide variety of new places, like new villages and so on.
Along with this, the land of Celdena will be accessible to a certain extent.

The story is very important for me, and it will be very deep.
You'll get the most basic story if you just listen to the dialouge and cutscenes, but if you start to explore, read books and so on, you'll get alot more of it.
The game takes place between Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess/Wind Waker. It is built upon the split timeline theory presented by Gametrailers in their last part of the Zelda retrospective.

The graphics is a thing I care alot about, and it includes graphics from A Link To The Past, and Seiken Denestu 3 and other titles.
It also has it's own library of custom graphics, created by me, or other skilled pixel artists.
I'm going for a realistic look, since the story is very dark. Infact, it's the darkest story I've seen in a Zelda game so far.
I'm not scared of killing characters in a brutal manner, so expect some "holy !@#$%, not him! and not like THAT!" moments.

Here's a few screens for ya:
The Great Forest: (UNFINISHED)

A SMALL part of Hyrule Field: (UNFINISHED)
http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/1404/migokalleci4.gif

I do have a few videos, but they're so slow, cause I recorded them on an older computer. I haven't gotten to record any new ones yet, but I'll post them when I do.

I will have a demo ready pretty soon. I just need to finish up a few things, and get it beta tested for the second time.
I'm hoping to have it ready in the next few weeks, but I can't promise anything, cause I'm pretty busy right now.

Comments? I really enjoy comments. :D

Now, that's all I want to give out for now. I'd like some comments though, as mentioned earlier.
This is also my first post here....
I'm Robin, from Norway! Hello everyone  XD

DEMO: (Copied form page 4)

http://dl10.zshare.net/download/19f5b8a8bf3d2cd370a62e9c2d58a90b/1223121949/19938077/The_Hylian_Phoenix.qst
That's the demo, folks... but one thing is VERY important:
You HAVE to use Build 864 to play, which can be found here: http://www.shardstorm.com/zc/alphas/864-windows.zip
DO NOT TRY IT ON ANY OTHER VERSION OF ZC!

For those who hasn't used ZC before:
Save all files in the folder you want them in.
Open "zelda-w".
When you get to the file select screen, hit ESC and go to settings.
Form here, go to "Key Buttons" and select the control setup you want to play with.
Now, click ok and hit ESC one more time. At the file selection screen, choose to register a name and enter "THP", or whatever you want to call my game.
Now, DO NOT PRESS ENTER. This will only start Zelda 1.
Hit the button you assigned "A" to. You'll get a screen which should say "A: Load a custom quest". Hit A again, and you'll eventually get to a screen with a browse button.
Locate and select "The_Hylian_Phoenix_.qst" and click ok.
Now you can hit enter and start the quest. Have fun :3
