Title: Legend of Zelda: Castle of Gannon Continued
Post by: TheFunkMaster on December 22, 2008, 01:06:21 am
We all know MattCoz's Castle of Gannon.
I liked it, a lot. So I wanted to finish it, and this is my attempt.

The ai is really shabby.

UPDATE3:NEW Hookshot works perfectly, added a new level, a town, 2 houses...a boss(really sucks)..ummmmm I added a boomerang, but its not in example cause I just to put it in and I'm too lazy to reupload..changed window size..added some npcs, and fixed some other little things,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bg2jP069e1o

I don't really have much to say.

Arrow keys:
Left/Right - Move/Draw Bowstring
Up - Jump/Aim weapon
Down - Duck/Aim weapon/ Read sign/ Open chest

Letters:
A - Jump, again in air to double jump
S - Dash, again in air to air dash, or jump while dashing for an extended jump
D - Attack, up to a combo of three or in air for air attack, or while on wall for wall attack While in air, hold up, down, or nothing for different attacks
F - Use item ( Bow, Hookshot, Bombs, and Boomerang(Boomerang is not in demo)

The AI in the game are just place holders, don't pay much attention to them.
Sound is TERRIBLE, SORRY!

Rate and review please.
(Sorry the screenshot is too big for the forum thing.)

UPDATE! December 28!

I fixed up the rain, worked a little with the menu, and I added two more inair attacks!

Hold down to do the spike thing.
don't hold anything to do a side slash
and hold up to do a triple jump spin attack thing!

Your link to the demo doesn't work. I changed the URL and got it to work though.

Good luck continuing this, lot to live up to. I hope MattCoz doesn't mind or you have permission.

The enemy you included, I slashed him to the edge of the cliff, he got stuck (his sprite was flipping horizontally constantly). Then he floated all the way to the right outside the map.

I couldn't get the F key to work.

I like the 3 hit sword animation.

Double jumping was smooth.

Was the demo only one small area? It was as far as I could get.

Again, good luck.

I'll fix the url.

This is _NOT_ MattCoz's engine, I built it from scratch, on my own.

I know the enemies are screwed up, I just put them in there really quick.

You need to pick up the items from the treasure boxes.

the demo has 2 large areas, and a large town. Also two small houses(in the town)

I think you got stuck at the wall, you have to use the bombs (in the chest, next to the wall) to blast the cracked wall, then walk through...Read the signs!

How do you open chests or read signs? It doesn't say in your original post.

This is interesting.. CoG was a great project for its time. IMO, I think you should just let Castle Of Ganon R.I.P and make an engine based off of it. You know, a totally different game. That's just my personal opinion on it. I'm not sure how the original developer would like to see his game continued by some random guy. Anyhow, nice attempt :).

EDIT: Where are my manors?! Welcome to ZFGC! The addiction that you will never ever overcome.

Yeah, I'm planning to make this games story more like link to the past, maybe oot. I haven't really thought about a story line.

Ah. I'm more than happy to give you any advice on anything once you've started focusing on them parts. Feel free to add me on MSN. Good luck on your project :).

Hah, I just saw your post Basniak.

Well, first, thanks for inviting me to zfgc. :D

And second. If things go well, expect an update tomorrow(or the day after) with the boomerang/lantern, some graphic repairs, and torches, maybe something else if I think of it.
(The enemies will still be retarded, I'll work on that later, unless someone wants to do it for me :D)

looks good so far; although to bear the castle of ganon name, you need one thing- a dynamically moving camera :P

Make an object for your camera, and make it move_towards_object( *yourlinkobject*,distance_to_object(*yourlinkobject*)/10), and set your camera panning to that. :p

Code should be similar to that

I put that in, and I like it!  Thanks.

Hey, I like the side-scroller style. It really opens up the game, allowing for multi-directional sword attacks. A spin attack in mid-air. That's cool.  XD

Thank you:D

I will be making more in air attacks, like the spin attack, and a side slash thing... soon.

I like the Z targeting, I was surprised to see the fairy go there and back. It'd be nice of there was a circling crosshair like in Ocarina of Time too, just an idea.

I still can't get F to work for some reason. I got the bomb, and the bow is already equipped. I spammed F but nothing happened. How do you equip, or use bombs? Sorry for being a pain or missing something.

Nice Santa hat also.

I noticed you said you work on this daily. It's important to take breaks before you get exhausted, stressed, which usually leads to giving up. =].

Good luck.

Circling crosshair?

I don't know why F isn't working for you...weird. Are you on a laptop?
Press "T" and then try to use the menu, just press space, bring the cursor to the weapon, and then press space again.

and I'm working on it daily because I'm getting a lot of time off of work latley, so I don't have anything to do, once work starts up again, I'll slow down.

Also, just today. I gave Link another attack, while you're in the air, and attack, he doesn't go down, (unless you're holding down) but does an in air slash.

and then the power went out....

Hey, AcDo

Try this...

and press G... Tell me if a boomerang comes out of Link..

I am  on a laptop, perhaps that is the issue (somehow?).

Yes, G does make a boomerang. If you spam G several come out, may want to limit it to one =P.

F does work now, at least after I went to the inventory screen. Is the arrow only meant to land infront of you? Also, I liked how you could pick up arrows after shooting them.

I forgot to mention before, I like the weather system.

You had the message when you got bomb to use F to use them, when in reality you have to equip them first. May want to alter the text a bit.

Spamming G to make more, I actually turned that ON just for testing.

and Hold F while using the bow then use the left and right arrow keys to increase/decrease power, you can tell because link moves his arm.

and I'll alter that text right away.

Were you hoping for dialogue scenes in this game? I have a nice Zelda portrait that I found. You can use it...was just an avatar on Zelda Universe.

By looking at the video, it seems the collision is not always 100% working? Anyway it's looking great so far, gonna try that demo soon. :)

Moon_Child:
Collisions are being worked on, but it's nothing serious.

Jeod:
Thanks, but I'd rather have 100% custom art, and all from the same person.
and I do have someone doing that for me.

I'm gonna upload another demo tomorrow if everything goes well..

Death scene, a new monster, SLOPES!, fixed up some bugs with the menu, tuned up the sounds a bit, and some more stuff I don't remember.

http://www.nibbles.tenstones.net/games.html

Lots of new stuff in that one, a little intro screen, a death scene, a new monster, and some new attacks, also slopes!

and if you don't like the controls, please post a keyboard layout for me to change it to, and it won't be hard to change(I'll make it customizable too)

I would say lower the size of the HUD icons.  The HUD is meant to inform, not obstruct vision, and it's bordering on the latter.

It'd be awesome if you could get sprites in an original style, the sprites you're using now are clearly MegaMan Zero mods.

I have been thinking of getting a custom sprite sheet...Dunno yet.

And I'll work on the HUD

It's best to figure that out sooner than later.  The more you put it off, the more sprites you'll likely need to change the style of. :/

Yeah finding the shortcuts were fun ^_^... So far I like the game. So far I think yours tops MattCoz's engine. An example, his engine did not support slopes; yours does. There's still a lot of work ahead of you :p. I can't wait to see where this goes.

Saying it's better than MattCoz's makes me giddy.
