Feedback / Hate to be the one to say this, but...
« on: January 26, 2011, 12:24:32 pm »
Why exactly is Shadowgazer still stickied in Zelda Projects, if not only is it NOT going to be a Zelda game, but it also is no longer being actively developed on this site? All I see the topic doing is sparking "Hey why cant I download shadowgazer?" "Hey where is shadowgazer?" "hey can I use graphics from shadowgazer?" topics. I mean I love KingMob and all for being so passionate about making the game what it was, and getting it so popular, but should we really be cradling it like that? Especially an old unsupported version. Really, aside from projects of the month, no one game should be sponsored by ZFGC, just because of it's popularity, as it comes across almost as like trying to leech users out of the aforementioned game. Maybe it's just me, but I really see no reason why the topic can't just be sent to the archive either until KingMob returns with news of his IP, or as memento to the original, and KM can make a new topic.

Just saying.

Submission Archive / GML Contest #1 poll
« on: January 16, 2011, 06:55:19 am »
Voting will continue for 7 days! Voters are encouraged to reply with personal picks for Most fun, Most original, and Best use of GML!

Most fun: Oculus - Feels like an old-school arcade game! and that's what I was hoping for! :)
Most original: Flip-bit - Very fun concept executed perfectly!
Best use of GML: Flip-bit - VERY orderly code that efficiently gets the job done!

If anything, this contest taught me that I am an incredibly sloppy coder! Holy crap, man!

Updates / The GML Master's Challenge
« on: December 24, 2010, 07:46:52 am »
Welcome to the first ever GML Master's Challenge!
Episode One: Mastering the art of mastering no artist.

Theme: draw commands only! no pre-rendered graphics.
Running time: 12/25/10 - 1/14/11.

In the first of what I hope will be an ongoing series of contests, we will be having a challenge which the only rule will be you are not allowed to have any pre-rendered art displayed. (i.e. Backgrounds, Tiles, or Sprites be them internal or external.) Everything displayed on the screen at any given time must be solely from draw commands.

The rules and sign-up topic is located HERE

There is currently a prize, which is a key to unlock the beta version of MineCraft. Potential alternate prizes may be available if I decide to later.

Due to having an actual "monetary" prize, I've made voting very strict. Once the competition is up, games will be put on display for the community to play and judge. Judging will be vote based in a seperate poll, but along side the poll, you must provide a "review" of the game based on Fun, Originality, and Use of draw commands using a 1-10 system. Ballot stuffing is also entirely prohibited. Any votes by members who've registered after 10/23/10 unfortunately will not be qualified to vote, and their votes will be nullified upon tally.

I'd like to get as many members as I can in on this, so if you're fluent in GML and think you're a bad enough dude(tte) to put your skills and to the ultimate test of (wo)manliness, then put your minecraft key where your hands are! AT THE END OF YOUR ARMS! And then use those hands to start writing code once I announce coding may begin!

Contests / Game Maker exclusive contest #1
« on: December 24, 2010, 03:28:25 am »
Welcome to DJvenom's GML Master's challenge #1! A contest consisting of a game made in Game Maker, with absolutely no sprites!  The premise for the contest is all graphical display must be done using draw events, but the catch is you may use no sprites at all. Registration is currently open! Programming commence as of 12/25/10 and 1/14/11 shall be the turn-in date. One condition will obviously be providing a .gmd .gm6 or .gmk. An .exe is optional, but very ideal as the contest will be solely judged by the community. Voters will also need to provide statistics for Fun factor, Originality in idea, and Effectiveness in using draw commands.

This leads to the overall winner, as well as 3 honorable mentions in 3 vital categories :)!

If this contest goes over well, I may make this a monthly occurrence to not only get people interested in creating games, but people who are less fluent in GML also have submission's source files to skim and get an idea as to how certain functions work :D! Everybody wins! (figuratively, of course.) Just to sweeten the pot, What hangs in the balance right now will be a Minecraft activation code. I will buy you a key which you can use for yourself, or give to a friend you wish to play beta with :) Teams are welcome, but the prize will then be the humble indie bundle! :)

So as of right now, sign-ups are in effect! I personally am signing up too, to defend my moneys!!

So here is the skinny (tldr):

  • Sign-ups begin now until (date TBA).
  • GM exclusive (sorry) versions 4.*, 5.*, 6, 7, or 8.
  • Programming on your actual game may begin 12/25/10!
  • All work is to be PMed to myself 1/14/11! (earlier if you'd like)
  • Teams are welcome.
  • No sprites/backgrounds permitted. All drawing must be done via draw functions.
  • You will be judged on Fun, Originality, and Usage of draw events.
  • Source files are mandatory.
  • Sprite based fonts are not permitted.
  • Due to Game Maker's collision system, mask sprites will be allowed.
  • Sprites used for reference in the room editor are permitted as long as they aren't drawn at any point in-game.
  • The winner will get a Minecraft key!

Let's make this a fun regular thing, ZFGC!!

Current contenders:

♥ Mamoruanime
♥ Nabeshin
♥ Knighty
♥ Martijn dh
