Title: [Solved] Custom magic attack (alttp style)
Post by: Martijn dh on June 05, 2011, 10:16:19 am
Hello all,

I have another request for my game: a magic attack to be used with the rod of medu (=stone magic).

With some more work I should be able to release a new demo by the end of next week, but I'm strungling to also be able to include the stone magic. The original plan was to use the magic attack (sound included) from Super Mario World's magikoopa for sprites, but the size was wrong. It should be no larger then 16x16. Also the colors seem really out of place in the style. My editing hasn't helped it much.

I've attached my own attempt at the magic (along with the magic from the ice- and firerod for possible reference). If someone could make me an animation (that DOES fit with the lttp style) to use as stone magic I'd be most gratefull.

If I could do it myself I would have already done so. The suggestion is appreciated but I can't really do much with it. Also, the rock is a projectile and not very magic like (if memory serves me correctly that is).

Since it's a weapon that turns things to stone and is called the Rod of Medu, there is a clear reference to Medusa, so maybe you could do something with snakes. The rod it self at least could be a snake or have a snake coiled around it.

Here is the itemsprite I'm currently using for the rod of medu itself. It'll basicly be used as seen, but I'm open to improved versions.

it just has to shine and why shouldnt a stone magic not use a stone effect?

The thing is that the magic from the rod of medu can turn other things to stone upon. Like the ice magic can turn things to ice and the fire magic burns stuff. A stone, like in WOW, looks like a projectile with a little magic glow to make it float. In other words: it looks like it's going to do its damage kinetically. It's not what I'm looking for because of that and because it doesn't really fit with the ice and fire magic.

My attempt, in a couple colours. It's hard to get yellow looking good with the LttP palette, but I think the orange looks alright.

The sprites and size are a nice improvement. The colors didn't do it justice I felt, so I made some edits myself (see the images below). Personally I like the fourth situation best.

Thanks Nabeshin!

To me they still look a little too opaque.  Maybe they would look better if you increased the overall transparency.  Just my opinion.

The fourth looks good. Like I said, I just grabbed LttP colours as best I could. Good work.

Hold on Martijn, in LTTP you had the Fire Rod and Ice Rod because they were opposites. You need a Rod of Air if you have a Rod of Earth. That's the rule for the rods :-\

Nah. A green rod would not show wll against the black background of the itemmenu. Estatics > Logic. Ask my mother, she'll tell you. XD

That's a load of balls and you know it. What about the green tunic?

Well, you got me there.

I just strongly think if you're going to follow LTTP properly and you're having a rod of earth, you should have the opposing elemental rod of it.

Oh, you were serieus? Sorry.
I currently have no plans to also add a wind rod.

I was being serious. You clearly have put dedication into your engine and I so I give dedicated feedback

Okay, understood. I'll take it into consideration then.
Things that comes to mind are:
- Whatever it touches starts floating. Seems a little silly and will be very hard to program.
- Whatever it touches gets blown back. Has puzzle potential. I should however mention that I am considering adding the magnetic gloves as well so there would be some overlap.
- It could power windmills like in the first dungeon from twilight princess. A possibility.

some ideas for a wind rod:

"The Rod creates a windwirl (16x16 or 32x32 tiles at best ) that bounces near enemys away"

Like those strange tiles which bounces everything away in the tower of hera just that you could create them
either time based that you can create multiple to hold enemy waves away or one at a time

"If a Whirl is created beyond a cliff you can pass it"

Just like invisible tiles you could use rooms with many cliffs or bottomless holes to make a "walkthrough riddle"

"Whirlwind A brings the User to Whirlwind B"

The Portal-Way  you create the first whirl and if you get on it you fly to the second and back

Keeping in tone with the Rod of Medu(-sa) being named after Greek Mythology, I though that the Rod of Air would be called something like the Rod of Anem(-moi)

Anemmoi is a little less known that Medusa, but it might work. I actually ended up with Medu because I needed to name a villain. His special power will be... you'll understand. Rod of Medu is meant to be read as "Rod once belonging to Medu". Adding in a simularly named windrod .. nah, I'll just add in another villain. It'll work.

The main issue I have with implementing another rod is not so much the programming or naming but more the spriting and soundeffects. I would need to have some kind of magical wind animation for the rod to shoot out. Any takers on designing one (at 14x14 pixels)? The sound effect is another challenge, but that can come second.
