Title: SCRAPPED LoZ: The Awakening of a Shadow "The darkness is falling on Ornatus..."

 (http://gmc.yoyogames.com/public/style_emoticons/default/GM045.gif)  Game Information:

The Legend of Zelda: The Awakening of a Shadow is a Zelda fan game currently being created in Game Maker 8 Pro.
It has been a work in progress since December 2009.
I intend to update this topic as much as possible.
In this game I will try to use as many aspects from as many Zelda games as possible (e.g. the owl statue from MM.)

Oh, yeah, i also want a proper story-line with side-quests and twists- like in TWW when you have to find all of the peices of trifoce in the sea, and mini games.
Not like the oracle games where you complete one dungeon then move onto the next straight after.

Can't say much without a demo.  I do see that you are using one of dlbrooks' engines.

I moved your topic over to this board and altered the title so it had the correct tag; welcome to the forum too and good luck with your project.

No offense but trying to make a game off someone elses engine isnt a good way to learn. Engines should be used as a tool for learning how things work not a way to cut corners. I cant't see this game getting very far if you lack the dedication to learn how to program a few simple things.

Actually engines are part of code that take much time to code but has to be repeated for every new game. Thus yes, engines are made to cut corners. Especially corners that are to tedious to repeat over and over. Most of the time people abandon projects because they can't get through the engine stages. That he is using an engine makes it more viable that his game gets finished, because he can focus on the house and not the foundation, which is often more enjoyable.

Good luck The Boy, and keep up the work.

I was about to say; Engines are made so you don't have to code that portion of the game again and again.

In a sense, using GameMaker is like using a prebuilt engine, and it's in that sense that stating engines are for learning off of doesn't work ;p

Well I guess what I meant to say is he's better off in the long run learning how to do it all on his own, didn't mean to knock his game just sharing my thoughts.

Sometimes the best way to learn is through an engine.

That's how I've learned what little I know of GML. Haven't really taken the time to learn more.

Looks great, man!

Yeah.. i could of done all of the movement myself- but i like to start off with a "foundation"- something to work off of rather than starting from scratch- which is very tedious and boring.

Tried the demo but I'm afraid to say I'm a little dissappointed.
-The filesize is 35mb. That's ... uuh... massive. Maybe it's the engine you are using that's so big?
-I start the game and it pops up in fullscreen. That makes the game look really ugly as oppossed to the default screen or a multiblication of that.
-The enemy on the left just moved over the pit and got stuck. I appearantly touched it shortly after and it dissappeared.
-Can't move left in or over the pit. Can't move right because of an invisible wall. So I'm stuck on the first screen
-There are no instruction (like F1 or in the starting post here) so I can't tell if I'm missing things aside from sword swinging and rolling. You're starting post mentions other items so I am probably wrong.
-If I walk left up against a wall and swing my sword the character's facing is changed after the animation. It happens for different directions as well. This isn't an issue while moving.

Don't be discouraged though. I've you work on your presentation then 1/3 of this is fixed instantly.
Another 1/3 is me complaining that there isn't much to do. Your screenshots say otherwise so that may not be an problem for the next demo.
And the last comments are glitches I guess.

Didn't like this demo, but I'll look forward to the next one.

Edit: Right. There is a read me file I missed. Let me check the game out a little further.

Edit2: This is more like it, but I do have a couple more things to mention:
- There were 6 instances where I moved to another screen, got hit before I was able to do anything and got pushed back to the previous screen.
- In the desert, if you bring up the menu, the sand is covering the menu.

And another thing, try hookshotting over the holes.

I tried your demo and what bothered me the most was that when I got to a new screen I got instantly hit by a leever. Another thing is that when a weapon fires it does not always go in the same direction you are facing. For example walk up against a wall, then walk slightly left and once more walk up. Now shoot the hookshot or the boomerang or arrows and they will fly off to the left. Also interesting ly is that there are pits and water but they act like walls.

Perhaps he just wants us to give some feedback. To be honest, I've read this topic and watched the trailer but never took the time to post here. I guess we should try to post more often, we ourselves also like it if we get a reply every now and then.

about the trailer:
Its not bad, but there are a few things that I would like to point out.

1.  your trailer shows that the hud sometimes makes it hard to actually see the doors on top of a room
2.  in the rooms where you have to climb on the vines the walls on the side of the room are those like when you walk on the
floor, this looks a bit wrong
3.  when you shoot your arrow at the tree switch to make the chest appear you climb high, but your arrow hits almost on the
ground level. Don't know if this is what you intended, but I would place the switch higher on the tree
4.  it might look better if the text boxes would fit the game screen.
5.  isn't the endboss of the dungeon only to be hit in the eye?

Consider / Improve these points and you have the kind of quality game I like to see and play.

1. It's being fixed as i said in another post.
2. I don't know what's the problem.. they are just walls....
3. Sure.. no problem.
4. I.. um... don't have pro... yeah.. if anyone can make a text engine for lite- um... HUGE CREDITS!!
5. Yeah.. well, it's just a demo, so it's just to test the level. All of those details will be added in the next (with a story) demo.

I watched the trailer it went by really fast actually, that it was difficult to see what was going on. But I have to agree on Atomicd1's points. For a solution on the HUD there are a few options, but first I'd like to point out the following. The graphics style you are using is actually an enhanced GB style. Unfortunately a transparant HUD does not work with GB style, even an enhanced one. Just make the back of the HUD opaque. People won't see what is beneath it, but that does not matter because the view is really obscured there any ways. Now for room top solutions.

1) You make the HUD separate from the viewport and the viewport if the game does not cover the entire screen. The viewport actually starts underneath the HUD and ends at the bottom of the screen. I know it is possible, but I can't just say how to do it, without experimenting first.

2) This one is bit more crude, but it is easier to implement. First I assume that your HUD is the size of 1 or 2 tiles and not the size of partial tiles. Now you add a number of rows of dummy tiles equal to the height of your HUD to your gamemaker room. If you work with view boundaries within the gamemaker room you need to move the top boundary the height of your HUD up. This allows for a clear view of the top walls and doors and if the HUD is opaque those dummy tiles and all are obscured by the HUD.

Well keep up the good work and one month you'll make it to the Sponsored section or become Project of the Month.

Ooh, headrush! Umm let's see..
For your first question, yeah, I know it looks a bit odd, but I can't think of anything to do about  it.. I'd anyone can, I'll be in your dept!
I'll finish this post later when I am at a real computer, typing on my iPod is so hard and tedious.

All you do is sprite the rooms smaller so that the top parts are below the hud and make the hud opaque........

Or simply don't use a bar HUD.

It almost always looks horrible when people use transparent bar HUDs when they're doing GB styled games. It's so much better to either use a solid bar without transparency, or come up with an entirely new HUD solution.

And one more thing. The graphics look custom made. Did you make them yourself or did someone else made them. Those Bongo Bongo's look somehow familiar.

yeah, I custom made most of the spites except for some of the basic enemys which were from that purple sheet on the recourses section. The bongobongo one was an edited one of one of the sprites  for the tooted community project. I custom made the skulltula sprites from scratch.

I don't really think it's possible to agree here at all and probably not fair to even say. Not discrediting this project in the least bit, but the Shadowgazer was one of the most well thought out and well put-together projects aesthetically as well as structurally. It's one of the few Zelda fangames to come into it's own and work as a standalone game. I can't really say the same for this project. While it looks like it might eventually become a fun game, it's just not quite to that point yet. It looks like a new project through and through and there's no clear direction whatsoever with it; and no offense to The Boy at all, but it is definitely apparent that it's more of a beginners project. I say that only because there are conflicting perspectives, overlayed tiles that don't mix well, and coloring issues on a lot of sprites and tiles. Even in description the game sounds like it hasn't come into it's own yet in terms of development.

I suggest you peruse the boards a bit more and ignore the Shadowgazer thread. Take a look at the current OoT2d project for example.

Anyway; that aside; best of luck with the game. Take a look into some of the issues I mentioned, but keep at it and you'll get it down.

I would have to disagree with that because I thought the gameplay in this was very smooth. The only thing is that this game lacks a good plot, and the graphics aren't very good. But other than that I though it was fun to play. Also, I highly doubt that KingMob actually decided to turn the shadowgazer into an "original game." I think that he was probably just forced to quit working on it and he didn't want to reveal why e.g. he was forced to quit by nintendo or maybe he was in college and he got so into his game that he failed his classes or something. He seemed dedicated enough that he wouldn't have just quit for no reason.

Mamoru talked about generally about the games design, other than the shadowgazer this game lacks enough thought in evvery direction to be as good as the shadowgazer, but maybe that comes in time... some projects are reqorked over and over and show those kind of quality only after years

Highlighted text is precisely what I mean by it not being anywhere near the quality of Shadowgazer. Gameplay is also very choppy and overcrowded at times even in the video. There are a lot of aesthetic things that need to be changed to rank this game up from beginner to at least intermediate in design. Shadowgazer had everything well put together. Plot, graphics, gameplay. Everything worked in unison.

As for saying what KM did or didn't do; I don't think you should praise his game in one minute and then discredit him in the next :P It's very disrespectful.

Plain and simply put; it needs a lot of work. You can't compare a kindergarten painting to a Michaelangelo original; but that kindergärtner could do works of wonder in time.

do you give proper credit for all used / edited sprites? ^^
Yup! Will have a HUUUUUUUge list of credits- I'll also use nubcake's beamos engine- so they'll get extra credit

Is it really fair to say it's Nubcake's beamos engine, when he said he pieced together other people's work to make it...?

sure , i got one i made by taking someone's script and merging it with my GML knowledge,it's lite friendly!
it needs serious modding again though.

Better to credit the original creator and append additional credits for Nubcake's modification to the script.

Trying the demo 2 now:

- 49 MB O_o

- Why is the starting pic OoT, that's completely random, really unneeded.

- Fullscreen, Damn this is horribly ugly because of stretched graphics or whatever

- What are the controls, Demo 2 doesn't seem to have a readme

- I managed to get like 4 items magically at the start, ok then

- The HUD blocks the door up top so i couldn't actually see the door, had to feel around before i could leave

- The hit detection on the lone left Spider seems off, because the tree is in the way i can't stand in front of him to kill him when he turns around. same with the bottom right one.

Sorry man but this demo really needs a lot of work and isn't that good for a second demo.

You could benefit ALOT from goodnight's movement code. Also the hookshot collision is off, and you also need to improve your sprites. I've been looking at your windwaker sprite project and I know you have the capability to make your sprites much better. But I still really enjoyed playing. Once you fix all of these glitches that other people have stated this game could become really good

if it is the sound and backgrounds thats adding the memory, you should make your resources load externally if thats the case.

Yeah, now it's starting in windowed mode.
I'll post the controls on this thread.
The HUD is changed now, as in the most recent screenshot.
They are just test demos- they are not complete.

It's because I'm sticking to the traditional GBC style and by not sticking to the colour rules, you've made a unique style. Though it's solveable, try making the beamos grey or brown

enhanced.... well i would say : too much colors for too small sprites if you don't have an overall quality in ypour game which shows high details on small space, then so much colors are just ugly

chiming bell is better because he has the original gbc style AND details through custom made sprites

Doesn't look bad but I'd like to make some suggestions:
-The copy and erase text isn't centered like the title text.
-The distance between the middle section and the two lower boxes is far less then the distance to the title. I'd raze the middle section a bit.
-Link's status box doesn't allign with the three saved files. You could make the statusbox as big as the three files combined or allign it more.

Link looks really weird on the horse. It completely changes style with the horse. It does not fit. I suggest you take a closer look at Ricky, Dimitri and Moosh from the Oracle series.

:( ok.

Edit:
Hmm.. Looks like dimitri is a worthy candidate for editing.. Link sits on him like a horse, his actual shape is like a fat horse- I suppose with a little editing (thinning him out, mostly) he could be a great Epona(current placeholder for a name- it may change when the game progresses)

Another Edit:
Niek: attached is an example of the Dimitri-Epona sprite- could you comment??

Yet another edit:
Fine, I'll go along with the new style- it's simpler.

Okkkkkkk..... i've whipped the attachement up in paint in about 10 minutes- just to give the general idea.
Parts of the story of the swamp:

Show content
You get to the deku palace through woodfall (MM) and you find the dekus and their queen (maku sprout) in distress! it turns out all of the water supply has been poisoned and they have blamed it on the other creatures of the woods (raccoons, monkeys, etc) and have shunned them and turned to violence when they come for help- it also seems as-though someone has stolen the Deku Seed - a sacred item passed through the dekus since their parting from the koriki- and the deku tree. legend has it, that in their time of need, a hero from the the light will come down and save them. - a bit unfortunate, really, seeing as they think Link is the hero, and that the monkey leader has stolen it and hidden it at the Deepforest Temple (demo 2), also they have sent you to it under threat of burning. the dekus have also locked up the Maku Sprout- for her "safety"- silly really, because it seems that she knows that link is not that hero, and that the animals are not to blame- that Gohma had sent spies to steal the Deku Nut- and using it to poison their water supply and brainwash the dekus to lock up the Maku Sprout. The dekus open the gate and shoo you to the temple. you kill gohma, get the deku nut, and the Eternal Forest. you retern the Nut, it releases a wave of remembrance, and snaps the dekus out of their brainwashed state. The Maku sprout is then released with apologies, and all of the animals.

Not to mention that the text contains character references to Nintendo characters and it is heavily based on MM's story of the swamp, which means if you copyright it, you would be guilty of plagiarism.

Update
Intro Story: (goes with picture attached)
Once ago, in a land named Hyrule, the peoples that one lived there were blessed by the power of the Gods. They worshiped the item left there by the Godesses that created the land as a god in itself.
But one day, a shadow passed over the land, spreading a cloak of darkness over it and causing great catastrophe for it's people. But then, as hope seemed to have been almost lost, a hero in green appeared as if from nowhere, and wielded the blade of evil's bane, and smite the shadow into darkness, saving the land of Hyrule. Then the hero of time fell into shadow, and all memories of him after this are lost. Thousands of years later, another shadow passed over the now flooded Hyrule, but a child, identical to the hero of the time appeared, and plunged the blade of the ancient hero into the shadow, turning him into stone, and saving the new Hyrule- once again. However, this time, the hero left to the great sea, looking for new adventures. But during one of these, his boat was attacked by a shadow, perhaps awakened by anger after years of plotting his revenge. This hero was then lost from the minds of all who knew him. However, this legend will remain on the wind's breath, for many generations to come.

Basically, this game runs on an alternative timeline to Phantom Hourglass (and all games after it)

yeah.. those names are currently placeholders.. i'm thinking of Lake Ornia.. or somthing  XD

anyway, you've got to remember that this is an alternate timeline to PH and ST, so some Hyrulian names are bound to come up! Anyway, we all know that nothing can replace Death Mountain (other than perhaps Dragon Roost Island- it's music is so nostalgia-y..... )!
Also, things like Zora's domain and such have stayed the same for simpleness' sake.. it makes the game somewhat easier if you see a recognisable name like Kakario Village or The Lost Woods and know that "hey, the lost woods has the forest temple in it... i'll go there".. understand  :)?

Thanks! It's always nice to hear compliments!
UPDATE!
Masks screen added, other menus changed slightly..
In this game, masks will be important- some will change your appearance
Show content
(like the gerudo mask- which'll allow you to talk to and walk past other gerudos   :o )
, while some will be ordinary masks, like in OOT. By the way, there are roamers going around of some Secret, Legendary masks.. who knows if they exist  ?

Roamers is supposed to be rumors. With roamers in there it made me read it as if you're saying someone is roaming the world with a secret mask but no one really knows if they exist. But that would make it a rumor, so... lol.

Update:

I'm starting work on the main field bit now, and i'm about 30% of the outside, and 10% of the inside, like the market and caves. The main field is like the Hyrule Field from OoT.. I'll post some screenshots of the progress if you want.

Also, just wandering on your opinion, do you think that the tree on the moon (MM) is like the tree in SS?

Some WIP field screenshots. I have left out some places because i want you to see them for yourself in the demo.

I must say, this entire game looks sexy so far. In that field screenshot, one type of tree doesn't have a shadow, another has a shadow that streaks to the right, and another has one that's directly below it. Some areas look like they're overcrowded with trees. Well, for an open field. The path seems to be too angular, maybe you could make a sprite that is rounded? Anyway, great looking game, it'll probably earn a place on my desktop when it comes out.

ohoho.... you've got a little bit before that! maybe try one of the demos or wait for the Deku- based one.... whatever the poll comes up with.  Hehe... sexy field..  >:D       Screenshot of the Ordon Village Entrance...
oh yeah, the "squarish" corners are not accidental- it still is based mostly on the GB zelda games- so some things'll still be "blocky"
the trees are just placeholders- as the game progresses, they'll gradually be replaced.

I find the field a bit empty and feature less, but I guess it is still an early design.

Just a heads up for everyone, The Boy has been temporarily banned on account of being under age 13.  The ban will be lifted on his 13th birthday, which is in 77 days.  So dont panic over lack of updates!

Nice new Youtube video. Though it felt like the masks were not always in place while your were walking around.

For the poll: Others
reason for this choice: I dont like demo's, they show to much of a game resulting in it beïng less fun to play when its done.
there are no suprises left in the items one has to gather, or the abilities you have during the game.

Prehaps there are many things i am not showing you? Prehaps some items will be changed (again). Prehaps some are fake/useless?  ;)

Perhaps,I can't see what your now showing, but I do see that you like to show a lot.
But making fake stuff just to put it in a demo, aint that making more work then required?
A project like this already has more then enough to be done without extra things that you dont actually put in the game.

Maybe there arn't fake things  WHo knows.  8)
.. well, I do. I wander what Brutus is up to.?? Have'nt heard from him in a while.
I still can't get the dragon cape to work. Well, I'll just have to keep trying.

Oh, btw, there is now a v2 of the Deeproot Shrine demo. I'll post a link ( :) ).

Lateral Game Maker (http://www.ismavatar.com/lgm/index.php) (This can convert GMK files to GM6 files in case you nvere had GM8.0)

Like it, but link looks out of pace, he looks flat compared to everything else. You need to add black outlines an change the palate slightly

Unfortunately, no.
The engine was getting way behind my abilities and I had already made so much of the story, that I couldn't change even a few things.

Coming along nicely so far :).  A few pointers to help you improve:
-Link's "Down" walking animation is misaligned.  He should not waddle like that.
-When Link is attacked by an enemy, projectile, or whatever else, he should be knocked back a bit.  He just kind of tanks the hits in that trailer there.
-Near doors in the dungeons, the wall should not curve in, but should instead, connect to the door.

Hope these help you out.
