Entertainment / Pikmin Wii
« on: July 17, 2008, 02:45:53 am »
So I was just reading a live-blog of Nintendo's 2008 E3 Developer Roundtable at Joystiq and this happened:

Quote from: Joystiq
7:38 In response to a question about whether or not a new Pikmin is in the works, Miyamoto says he'll announced the new game when he's ready. Apparently he's ready now. "We're making Pikmin," the translator says. OMG MEGATONZ!
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/liveblog-from-nintendos-2008-e3-developer-roundtable/

...And that was basically the end of it.  There you have it, not all is lost.

Within an ancient globe exhibited at a museum, there is another world called Yuretopia. Yuretopia’s peace is shattered by the marauding pirate Shay King. Queen Melfull and her Melfull subjects are imprisoned and Shay King claims the legendary “Deldel Purse”, which spits out coins when shaken. Female pirate Captain Maple Syrup observes Yuretopia’s crisis from the outside world. Desiring the legendary treasure, she steals the Ancient Globe and sends it to Wario to avoid the actual work of stealing it. Wario prepares to raid the kingdom when one of the Melfull escapes to the outside world in hopes of finding help. Beseeched by the Queen to become a hero to the kingdom, Wario sets off to Yuretopia.

So... is it just me, or does this game look !@#$% amazing?  I guess I've always liked the Wario Land games, so that's probably part of it, plus the hand-drawn sprites and such look awesome.  Some of the gameplay almost reminds me of Yoshi's Island.

Entertainment / impressive displays of musical talent
« on: April 08, 2008, 10:19:22 pm »
After seeing two threads showing people play guitar today I felt like making this topic.  Post videos of people playing music that you consider to by insanely impressive.  They don't need to be playing guitar or any particular genre of music.  I'm only going to post this one video for now:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbndgwfG22k" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbndgwfG22k</a>

Erik Mongrain is a beast at acoustic guitar tapping.

Entertainment / Petition to stop Uwe Boll
« on: April 07, 2008, 04:45:10 am »
Quote
Seems like Dr. Uwe Boll has been navigating the globe for about seven months with his Postal / Seed double feature tucked under his arm. He pops up at various festivals and conventions, shows off his new masterworks, and then hops a plane to another continent. And he does lots of interviews, most of which are pretty damn amusing. The latest Q&A with the king of krapola appears on FEARnet, and it's there you'll find some solid questions about animal abuse, Nazi humor, and all those crazy German tax shelters.

But the best part of the interview comes near the end. It goes a little lot something like this:

"FEARnet: Are you aware that there is a petition online, signed by 18,000 people, requesting that you stop making movies?
Boll: Yeah, I know that. 18,000 is not enough to convince me.
FN: How many would it take?
Boll: One million. Now we have a new goal."

So there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. Uwe Boll has thrown down the gauntlet. If we can get another 980,000 signatures on THIS PETITION, then we will have done our part for the advancement of global cinematic culture. No more BloodRaynes or Houses of the Dead or Dungeon Sieges. If this isn't a worthy cause, I really don't know what is. Maybe if we get two million signatures we can get the guy's retirement to include the "producer" title. Don't wait to sign the thing: Boll already has Tunnel Rats, Far Cry, Zombie Massacre and BloodRayne 3 in production.

Postal hits limited release in late May, and (according to Dread Central) Vivendi Home Entertainment will unleash the Seed DVD in September.

Due your part to make the world a better place.  Sign the petition and then show it to everyone you know.  It probably won't work, but it's worth a shot.  The petition is located here:

Entertainment / To those of you in need of a better gamepad...
« on: April 05, 2008, 05:51:26 am »
I meant to post this some time back but never got around to it, but anyway, here goes...

For the longest time I had a shitty PC gamepad that was actually worse than using a keyboard for emulation and such.  I could have picked up a nicer one of course, but I never had the extra money or the desire to actually buy another.  A couples months back I stumbled across a program called GlovePIE, (originally created for use with a virtual-reality glove, hence the name).  Over time it has added the functionality for almost any sort of computer input device to be used as a game controller, (even MIDI keyboards), and this includes the controllers for the 360, PS3, and Wii, (with or without the Classic Controller).  With the Wiimote or Sixaxis you can even assign the accelerometer axises to emulate those of a mouse or other keys, (very cool with flight-based games).

Anyway, it's free, easy to use, and it's worked fantastic for me, (I'm using it with my PS3 controller).  Keep in mind that if you're using a Wiimote with the program your computer needs to have bluetooth.  You can download, read about, and get instructions on how to use the program here:

Entertainment / GTA IV edited for Australia
« on: April 05, 2008, 05:36:32 am »
Quote
Rockstar has produced an edited version of Grand Theft Auto IV for Australia in order to obtain an MA15+ rating.

The Office of Film and Literature Classification awarded the game an MA15+ rating on December 11 last year, advising consumers that the game contains "strong violence, strong coarse language, drug and sexual references".

A Rockstar spokesperson confirmed to Screen Play yesterday that the company had produced a special version of GTA IV to comply with the Australian classification system, which does not currently contain an R18+ rating, but declined to reveal what material had been cut.

The game has been rated R18+ by the British Board of Film Classification, New Zealand's OFLC and the German Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle. It has been rated M17+ by the Entertainment Software Rating board in North America.

The Grand Theft Auto series has a chequered past with the OFLC in Australia.

In 2001, thousands of copies of GTA III were sold before the game was rated and refused classification because players could pick-up prostitutes. An edited version was later released.

2002's Gran Theft Auto: Vice City was also edited for Australian audiences.

In 2005, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has its original MA15+ rating overturned and the game pulled from retail shelves after it was revealed game discs contained a hidden "Hot Coffee" sex mini-game. An edited version rated MA15+ was soon back on sale.

Grand Theft Auto IV is released in Australia on April 29.

Another blow to the Australian gaming community.  Thankfully Rockstar submitted an edited version for review, otherwise there's a strong possibility that it might have be banned outright.  I'm not going to post very much of my own thoughts on the matter in this initial post as I'd prefer to see the thoughts of others, (particularly from our members in Oz), concerning both this particular instance as well as Australia's current lack of an "R" rating equivalent for games.

Also, to those of you that will live there that would like to play the game in full, uncensored glory, keep in mind that if you have a PS3 you can just import it from the US or UK, (the PS3 is region-free  :D).

Graphics / Scribbleface
« on: March 29, 2008, 01:36:44 am »
I'm making this into a topic here because no one comments on stuff in the gallery, (at least not in the "Misc Artwork" section), or on my dA.  Anyway, I drew this yesterday when I was bored.  It started out as me scribbling on a piece of paper but I decided to make it into a drawing.  Before I tell you what I drew it with, can any of you guess?

Also, I'm aware that the proportions aren't right, the left eye is higher than the right, it's unrealistic, etc.  I wasn't trying to make it look realistic, (hence the colors), and I would have fixed the eyes but real life seems to lack an "Undo" button... >_>

Entertainment / They finally figured it out...
« on: March 23, 2008, 03:51:24 pm »
I just came across this.  Apparently Sega is working on a new Sonic the Hedgehog game for current-gen consoles called "Sonic Unleashed".  Normally people would be universally rolling their eyes at this point, except for one thing...it has 2D gameplay.  Well, there seems to be a small amount of 3D gameplay, but it looks more in the style of Sonic and the Secret Rings, so those part might not be too bad.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjxnhXs7Mqs" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjxnhXs7Mqs</a>

I guess after all the great reviews of the Sonic Rush and Sonic Advance games Sega realized that maybe there was a reason why everyone hates the newer console Sonic games...they don't work in 3D.

« on: March 12, 2008, 03:33:56 am »
The season premiere for the 12th season of South Park airs tomorrow night, (in the USA).  I just thought I'd give a heads-up to anyone who is a fan of the show.  Maybe some of you already knew this, but I found out just now and figured I might as well post a reminder.  Anyway, here is the episode description from the official site:

    "Tonsil Trouble"
After a routine tonsillectomy goes horribly wrong, Cartman comes face to face with his own mortality.

Also, there is a short clip from the episode on the site.  It doesn't really show anything, but if you want to watch it here's the link:

Entertainment / GameStop hosting a nationwide Brawl tournament
« on: March 06, 2008, 07:34:36 pm »
Quote from: Joystiq
GameStop announced today that it will hold Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournaments and midnight launches this Saturday at 2,500 of its stores. The single-elimination tournaments will begin at 10PM (local time), but contestants are asked to check with their store for exact time and must be there 30 minutes before the event.

Winners of the local GameStop store SSBB tournaments will continue up a chain, with a few more qualifying rounds, leading to the finals on April 12 in San Jose, CA. The last brawler standing will receive an LCD-TV (that's what the release says, but the flyer after the break says plasma), a Wii console plus accessories, "an entire Nintendo Wii Software Library" and $5,000 in cash.

Are any of you planning on participating in this?  I'd go, but the GameStop where I live isn't participating.  I don't feel like driving three hours just to get my ass kicked and drive back.

I just ran across this:

http://us.codejunkies.com/Products/Wii-FreeLoader__EF000593.aspx

It allows you to play imported Wii and GC games from any region without modding your console and voiding the warranty.  It's only $20US which seems like a pretty good deal.

So for the last few months I've been thinking about making a game and have been trying to learn XNA so that I could.  I was going to call it "Battle-Axe" and it was going to be a side-scrolling action game with rhythm elements similar to Guitar Hero.  The main character's weapon was going to be a supernatural battleaxe that was also a guitar.  Killing enemies would fill up a meter that, when full, would allow you to go into a bullet-time-esque mode with a rhythm mini-game.  Upon completing the mini-game the character would release an automated attack against all on-screen enemies where the amount of damaged inflicted would be based directly on how you performed within the mini-game.  There was a lot more to it than that, but that's the main gist of the overall concept.

You might be wondering why this isn't posted in WIP or Ideas and Concepts forum, and I'll tell you why.  Because of this:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6jEk9YOB7s" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6jEk9YOB7s</a>
That's right...someone beat me to it. The game is called "The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai" and is already pretty far along in development. Granted, the rhythm aspect of the game seems to be separate from the main gameplay and the main character has a sword instead of an axe, but aside from that this is the game I was planning on making.  The graphical style is exactly what I was planning, the gameplay is exactly how I imagined it in my mind, the music is basically the same style as I was planning, and the game is also being made in XNA.

They've been working on this for a while now, but I hadn't seen or heard of it until just now.  I wish I would have known about this earlier as it would have saved me a lot of time...I have a basic outline of the entire game, (story, level design, character design, etc.), but now I won't be able to use any of it without being seen as a rip-off artist or a copy-cat.  There are differences between this game and the one I was intending to make, but the similarities are so blatantly obvious that there'd be no way to avoid comparisons. The creator of this game even got the opportunity to speak at Microsoft's keynote today at GDC...damnit why didn't I get the chance to make mine first!? I'm pissed...

Anyway, has anything similar to this happened to any of you?  If so, explain what happened.

Feedback / Spam board rules?
« on: February 19, 2008, 09:05:40 am »
I honestly didn't expect to use that board at all, but now that I've purchased a key...I am.  I'm usually not a big fan of that sort of thing in a generally serious, personal forum, but going on there for the first time just now relieved a lot of stress somehow or another--I actually "LOL"ed literally for once.  Anyway, I feel very guilty posting within it, as though I'm breaking the rules. Of course the typical rules apply, (nudity, censor evasion, etc.), at least I assume, but I'm still worried that I might break some sort of rule that I'm unaware of outside of the obvious.

Strict rules obviously negate the purpose, but it might be good to have some general guidelines.  If nothing else, when someone buys a key to the board it might be good to have an automated PM sent to the user telling them the "do's and don't's" of the board.  A stickied "Rules" thread would obviously be easier to implement, but it could potentially under-mind the purpose.

This is a just a thought mind you.  I assume some of the staff members and regular members remain opposed to the inclusion of such a board, (as has been the case in the past), but honestly I approve.  Having a spam forum is a nice diversion, if nothing else, and could potentially remove a large portion of the spam from general boards preemptively.

I'm thinking about installing YDL on my PS3 and wanted to see what you guys think about this form of Linux.  If any of you with PS3's have tried it, (or know someone who has), your opinion would be especially useful.  As far I'm aware, there really isn't any reason to not install it.  Unless I'm mistaken, I'll still be able to play all games, blu-rays, use the PSN, etc.  Have any of you heard of any downsides to doing this or problems with YDL in general?

Entertainment / Torque Game Builder for Wii?
« on: February 14, 2008, 05:43:21 am »
I'm sure some of you are familiar with the Torque Game Builder, Torque Game Engine, or Torque X.  Well, they're making a new builder specifically for the Wii and/or WiiWare.  On the upside, I think it's much cheaper and easier than the traditional route. The downside?  I'm thinking you still have to pay for a Wii development kit and have to become an approved Wii developer.  Still, this should make things a bit easier overall, right?

« on: February 12, 2008, 08:59:44 pm »
Currently I have about 600 rupees and I doubt I'll ever use them.  The first person that convinces me that they deserve them gets them, otherwise I'm donating them to Dayjo for his forum game here:

http://www.zfgc.com/forum/index.php?topic=23529.0

I'm not giving them away based on anything related to me, (for example don't bother posting something like "I did x for you x weeks ago", etc.), I'm giving them away to the person that makes a strong argument that they have done or contributed something worthy to the forum in some way during the past few months.  This could be as simple as being a nice or resourceful member, but you'll have to prove this to me somehow.

This giveaway will only be open until 5:30PM Central time, if no one has convinced me by then they will be given to Dayjo at that time.

If this topic would fit better within a different sub-forum, please feel free to move it.

Some one recently listed a supposed Wii "prototype" on eBay.  It's obviously not real, but I lol'd.  Check it out.

I really don't know why...but I love whoever did this.  It sucks, the seller ended the auction prematurely, I'd be interested in seeing how many bids it would have received.
