The Legend of Zelda: Three Lances

BACKSTORY:
From the depths of time,
A tale of a Hero has been kept,
Guarded by the Royal Family,
And revered by the common folk.

The story tells of a hero named Link,
Who, whenever evil threatens Hyrule,
Will rise up and destroy the evil,
Or so the legends say.

From a parallel dimension known as Termina,
Ganon was able to circumvent the barriers,
Which divided the Sacred Realm from Hyrule,
And was able to dominate the land.

With an army of Terminians and fell beasts,
Ganon's mastery of Hyrule was swift and ruthless,
However, before Ganon could destroy them,
The Princess Zelda and the Master Sword vanished.

Ganon sought these two with all his power,
But he could not find the location of either.

The only thing that Ganon could find,
was a stone tablet.

On it, the words DIN, NAYRU, FAROE.

STORY (a.k.a Opening of Game):
Link and Arc are at Link's grandfather's house, listening to a tale being told in Old Terminian. They leave after the tale is told, but Arc leaves something behind. By the time Arc gets back it is very late. Travelling through the Greywood, they are attacked by Moblins. Link attempts to fend them off with his sword, but there are far too many and Link is too inexperienced. Link is knocked unconscious and Arc is dragged off kicking and screaming.

Link is later woken by a faerie who calls himself Pach. Link asks Pach to help him find Arc. Pach agrees to help if the Great Fairy in the Lost Woods will let him. As Link has had all of his possessions looted by monsters, he goes home to get his spare shield and then ventures into the Lost Woods.

GREETZ:
Bearer for his shield engine and the inspiration I had for the 'Omega Engine'
Captain Goodnight for his MM Clock Engine and OOT Heart Engine (bless his little heart XD) and for the other part of the 'Omega Engine' inspiration
Hero of Fire for LTTP styled OOT houses
GearGOD for the Luminaire engine
Talman25 for the Big Poe sprite
aab for the Deku Baba sprite
No BODY for the Phantom Ganon sprite
Gourry Inverse for his Gossip Stone and part of his Clock Tower Clock Face sprite

HONORABLE MENTIONS:
2awesome4apossum for his support of the game while it was in its early stages. Without his support the entire project would have been derailed at an early stage.
Bearer and Captain Goodnight for inspiring the 'Omega Engine' and making me envious enough of their skills to begin to sucessfully carry it out.
My brother Thomas (Hoodlum4hire) for nagging me to 'get on with writing the code'.
aab for making a Deku Baba sprite and giving me a real challenge in coding the engine for it.

One of my favorite projects ever is back ^_^

Looking as sleek as ever!  I especially love the logo at the top :)

Can't wait for a more debugged demo :D

I certainly remember this from over a year ago, and it's still looking sweet. The HUD looks a little too all-over-the-place but apart from that, damn good job.

Well, I'm gonna be bugfixing for a while, and while I'm doing that I'll probably do a few modifications here and there in terms of the visual style as well. Just a few little tweaks in terms of overall shapes etc. I'm finishing off the forest/woods tilesets and working on a few other places too. I need to make a few more customs to make the game that little bit more unique.

Wow, i think i remember this and i have to say this looks good, but like said before, the HUD is a bit strange :/. The story sounds very interesting and it has a great start. Good luck finishing this dude ;)

But who is Arc? ???

Post by: A Storm in the Desert on May 02, 2006, 01:22:21 am
A friend of Link. You'll see how he fits into the story in due time ;P

ADDED: I've decided to make some alterations to what I've already done of the engine to make the game run a little smoother and prune down some unessecary file size.

Looks quite good so far. I take it you haven't coded that clock engine yet, it always seems to be 11  ;)

But...hmmm..the lances just look a little rough against that logo, it might just be because it's on such a clean background though.
Title: Re: TLOZ: Three Lances DEMO SOON - NEW ENGINE
Post by: A Storm in the Desert on May 15, 2006, 10:58:38 am
The clock IS coded, but I've set it to be frozen on 11. It's for the intro of the game, the clock doesn't actually start until a certain point in the story. It's always daytime in Kokiri Forest in OOT until you go onto the field...this is a similar idea.

TECHNICAL UPDATE:
I'm proceeding to majorly change the game's code in order to speed up production; and also because the old direction the engine was heading in was looking for trouble. ;D Anyways, there should be a new engine release very soon, which will hopefully feature the actual opening of the game, and maybe some refurbished GFX. But that's not as likely as I'm still wrestling with the Deku Baba and Leever engines *shakes fist at problem code*. The engine you'll be able to sample will have most of (if not all of) the existing features in place.

I'll use the host you suggested Hyrule_boy. Also, everybody; feel free to check the first page. I've updated the credits list. More will be added later. I'm aiming to have the new engine finished within the month. I hope I can finish it soon! I wanna get onto making the game proper.

Great because I won't download anything anymore thats hosted by a shitty host like Rapidshare. Nobody wants to click 50ty pages before he gets what he wants. And after 50ty pages you've to wait 30 seconds or more.   :(

I'd also like to know how you got rid of the exit and minus signs.

Thanks again! Seriously, you've lived up to your name ;D 2awesome is right!

I'd also like to know how you got rid of the exit and minus signs.

In Global Game Settings under Graphics, there's a checkbox that says 'Don't draw a border in windowed mode'. If it's ticked, then the game won't show the buttons. I discovered this after wondering how someone else had managed to do it. ;D

I remember this game :). It's been in production for a while now, but it's good to see you've finally got a demo up. I'll give my impressions on the demo in time.

The screenshots and story sort of give a dark feeling to the game. I like it :).

EDIT: Well, not bad, not bad at all. There were a few errors and bugs though. Especially with the inventory, it always appeared in obscue places, and it was difficult to navigate. You should also try making it so Link is always in the center of the screen. This can be done really easily in Game Maker, I just don't remember how. There were some nice graphical effects, but overall the demo was quite short, still, pretty good. Nice work.

Post by: A Storm in the Desert on June 30, 2006, 01:15:45 pm
Yah. The inventory needs work. I'm attempting to fix it with a massive engine revision. There are quite a few bugs that need addressing.

UPDATE!!!!
The Legend of Zelda: Three Lances will be appearing at Z3 with a 'more better' engine, and there's a new support banner! Check the first post for it.

Hello peoples!
Here is me in all my glory! I am the co-developer of Three Lances and bringer of good support banner.
As mentioned by A Storm in the Desert the game engine is undergoing a large overhaul to make it "more betterer". Also the HUD has a new less cluttered look and should allieviate any concerns about interfering with gameplay. There won't be a new demo until Z3 so hang in there!  ;D
Title: Re: TLOZ: Three Lances DEMO SOON - NEW ENGINE
Post by: Goodnight on June 30, 2006, 02:44:25 pm
'Could have sworn I replied to this a couple months ago!

I'm not one for support banners, but the game's looking pretty good. A total overhaul from what I remember back in the day. I think I even used Three Lances as an example of a game with over/under bridges when describing to somebody the different ways to do it. :P

Only thing is, other than a few obvious mis-alignments with the menus that would be easy to spot and fix, it runs very slowly on my computer. I don't know if that's from the night overlay (probably not, even my crappy machine can usually handle those) or huge rooms that don't deactivate outside the view, or what, but I hope you can find a few ways to ease up on the processor.

..."Omega Engine"? Sounds ominous. I wonder what it is, and how I inspired it. ;)
Title: Re: TLOZ: Three Lances DEMO SOON - NEW ENGINE
Post by: A Storm in the Desert on June 30, 2006, 03:47:06 pm
Heh. The 'Omega Engine' is me sqeezing every inch of brainpower into developing an engine that works and doesn't chew up a lot of system resources. I've been studying GML for so long in order to develop it, a lot of my other programming knowhow has been forced out of my head through my ear.

It's been inspired by a lot of the engines I saw when I first joined ZFGC, at the time my work was VERY sloppy and I relied a lot on other people. I guess I was just inspired to really knuckle down and write something I could really be proud of.

Hey yo. Been absent for a while, got a lot on my plate. I'm still workin' on the new engine, I'll have a fairly functional engine soon. Swear ^^;

I'm not sure what the new demo will contain, but I'm confident that I should be able to do a long, hard slog on the programming in a couple of days.

Odd, that's not happened before...if the new engine does that, I'll take a look. If I find no problems, I've no idea what happened.

Heh, I'm still reprogramming the engine. I s'pose I could map a few areas and run them with the engine in its current state...

It's good i like it  ;D

But some feedback

alot of the menus were off set and weren't programmed right. The Menu pops up in odd places when I press pause and sometimes it never shows up. Link also is in constant movement when you hit pause. The Bush destroy effect looked really big and I didnt know if it was just how you programmed it to be. Overall that was about all I found wrong. Keep up the good work though you have my support. ;D

Apologies about the no-show at z3, I had meant to make a new demo but I've been rather bogged down with various personal issues inside and outside of my school life. I'm not sure, but I may have to place the project on hiatus for a little while so I can sort out everything else on my plate.

In the pause menu (Enter), make sure you're on the equipment subscreen. After you've gotten the sword from the chest in the forest area to the right, move the selector over the sword and press space. That will equip it. Due to a glitch, the pause menu remains at a certain set of co-ordinates, so it's best to be fairly close to the top left hand corner of the room.

Hey, good news people! After puzzling over a nasty instance of Link's sprite vanishing, I discovered something in the draw event that shouldn't have been there. So production on the rest of the engine is up and rolling again. Expect a new demo fairly soon, featuring an updated HUD, and a better engine all 'round.
