The school shootings happened here in Montreal so I've been following the news about it. The killer said his favourite game was that Columbine one, but one of the first things I saw on the news was that experts said video games were not to blame. He was already disturbed, hence his enjoyment of the game, and had an admiration for people who shot up schools. I just tend to ignore everything Jack Thompson says.

It seems to weird to be a feature... Maybe it's an accident that the developers liked?

Right.  I agree with that, but my thing is that you have to understand that they ARE trying to make us overlook that others were harmed too.
They aren't trying to make us overlook everyone else so much as they are... not mentioning them. Think of it this way though: when people talk about something, they tend to talk about how it relates to them, so Jewish people talk about how Jews were targeted. Which is another thing by the way: although many different minorities and groups were targeted, none to such an extent as the Jews were. Hitler was anti-semetic after all and blamed the Jews for all his tragedies - his father losing his job and becoming poor, his denial from art school, all the things he disliked about his life. So what happens is he moves from Austria to Germany, joins the Nazi party, becomes the leader, gets involved in politics, and once Hindenburg dies he manages to take over completely. But I digress.

Obviously other people were affected. Just take Poland for example. Other people that were specifically targeted were Communists. Russians, Slavs. Also anyone that was against Hitler or aided said groups would be hunted as well. But, since the Jews were a more personal enemy of Hitler, they were targeted first and in ways no one else was. In Germany they were first degraded, mocked, branded and outcast from society. Everyone else was either just killed or sent to camps... I say "just" but you know what I mean. They weren't as much of an "interest" to Hitler as the Jews were. It is therefore understandable how the Jews will often stand out and refer to their problems only rather than include the other victims.

Also, since this topic has evolved from a mere comment to a debate, I'm moving this. Congratulations! The topic has been upgraded to First Class for no additional charge!

They used the name to attract attention, not to be anti semetic. This is EXACTLY what I'm talking about. People name a restuarent whatever they want, it is their right, and the Jewish groups instantly jump on it 'holocaust was bad, it happened to us, so you cannot name your restuarant that!'
You're right in that people have the choice to name their restaurant whatever they want, but the Jews didn't say they weren't allowed to name it Hitler's Cross. If the owners had wanted to, odds are they could have kept the name. However, the Jewish community in the town protested the name and the insult that they felt. Hitler wasn't just some bad guy 60 years ago. He was a dictator who used his position of power and influence to carry out actions according to his own anti-semetic views. He is responsible for the millions of Jewish deaths, let alone the deaths millions of people of other minorities. He and Nazism are still the symbols for any evil men in the world and anti-semitism itself. Now imagine yourself a Jew in that city, and imagine the insult and horror you would feel to find someone has built a restaurant with signs that seem to glorify a man whose actions led to the murder of ancestors as recent as parents and grand parents. I have a lot of jewish friends, some of which have a hard time discussing the holocaust. I know people who have had grandparents or other relatives lost to the camps. Imagine having to grow up never having met some of your family purely because of one man's actions. Now tell me if Hitler was just some guy 60 years ago.

Just because you've never seen how people were affected first hand doesn't give you the right to say that they use it as a meaningless excuse.

Oh, and BTW, you're probably right in that the name was used to gain attention. It worked pretty damn well too if you ask me. I don't believe that there's anyone stupid enough to plaster Hitler's name somewhere in a glorified manner, especially in India, which is within bombing-range of Isreal. My only beef is that you think all Jewish people are petty enough to use the Holocaust, a deeply traumatic event, as a mere excuse.

But theres still no programmed way to allow members to access a board but not see it in smf as of right now.
Well... there's that glitch there... If I set a forum to invisible and the sub-forum to visible, you'll be able to see the title of the forum but only access the sub-forum via URL.

EDIT: Cheers for the move. I didn't know whether to post this in Community Speak, Tech Talk or here. I went with the most popular xP. Still, can someone help me out here...?
If it concerns a problem with the forum itself, put it here. If it has to do with Tech stuff, put it there. If it has to do with you or the members as a community, to CS it goes.

Yeah... so what theme are you using and have you tried clearing your cache. Sometimes that cache can play mean tricks on us.

I have odd taste in music: I love both classical and metal.
Not unusual at all. In fact you can find all sort of metal/rock covers of classical music. Classical music played by a talented guitarist is just unbeatable.

It's not far-fetched seeing as the technology has existed for a while, but I don't forsee many games using it. Voice regonition just seems foolish when people see you jumping around yelling at your TV when it's that much easier to jump around and push buttons at your TV. That and it would be a bad idea to try yelling at night when irritable people who control what food you get to eat don't want to be awoken.

Define "Spartans". Do you mean the ones from Halo or the real ones? If it's the former, they'd win, the latter and they'd lose.

Heh... watched the whole thing. That must have taken forever to do all that! It goes all the way up to where they pretend to take Chewie prisoner and then he kills a guy.

It wasn't hard :P. Sorry if I ruined it, but it's just what I do when these things pop up - I figure out what they're for.

Do I still have to wait to find out what the A stands for? ;)

Well "aetg" is obviously "gate", "Ekew Neo" is obviously "Week One". They're all anagrams. When I put "Hoilsrnec" into an anagram generater it gave me "Chronicles" so the title is "Chronicles of," then something that's not a real word.

Finally, I noticed in the source that it says the site is at "http://www.binaryphoenix.com/retro//CoA/". I'll assume "CoA" is the name of a game (Chronicles of something starting with A), that retro refers to you and it's hosted by Helios at Binary Phoenix.

Other Discussion / Re: Reformatting Windows
« on: August 12, 2006, 08:47:42 pm »
Reformatting is just resetting your HDD to be completely wiped empty. No OS, no files, nothing. IMO it should only be used as a very last resort, if then. I had a similar problem just recently which had been there for months. Both Spybot and Adaware couldn't do anything about it. I suggest getting antivirus programs like Avast! Antivirus and AVG Free Edition. Update them both and run them. I forget which it was, but one of them said that there was soemthing it couldn't delete and asked to run before the OS started. I said yes, that blue screen it shows when it does the disc check showed when I rebooted and it started checking for viruses. It found stuff, I got rid of it and now my PC runs fine. Also, it is suggested that you run them in Safe-Mode to limit what processes are running.

Also, if you want to speed up your HDD, you should defragment it. What that does is it basically cleans things up and moves them around to be more efficient. The things on your drive are stored physically on a disc. There's a little head on it (like a record player sort of, but much, much, much smaller). The time it takes to load things is partially affected by how long it takes for that head to reach it. By defragmenting you remove all of the junk that collects and move the useful stuff closer together so that it runs better.
