Basically making a topic sort of like Mirby's review topics but less formal/professional since this is just a personal thing and not a site thing. Also not limiting myself to games. Why am I doing this? Because boredom will drive a person mad

I'll probably end up cleaning this first entry up before I move on to a second one, it's kind of like a rough draft

I may just be jaded but this honestly looks awful and unappealing, on about every level I can think of. The graphics, the way the gameplay looks, just ugh. Not to mention pulling a Final Fantasy in the first place by doing a direct sequel to a game instead of just making a new game (Even though it is a new game so it's just branding)

I for one am highly disappointed

It looks like its more or less just an engine test meant for developer eyes, showcasing all of Conker's abilities and the world around him. The game is surprisingly far along considering the huge shift between this cutesy game and the more mature Conker's Bad Fur Day

Rare cut this title for three reasons:
1) It doesn't differentiate itself enough from other cutesy N64 platformer collect-a-thons like Banjo and DK64
2) Critical reception to Conker wasn't what Rare expected. Their strategy of "put a new furry creature on a flavor platformer of the week" wasn't working out
3) The game is so sickeningly cute that developers at Rare couldn't stand it

What I find more interesting than anything though is how people can't seem to understand why Rare isn't a AAA dev after Microsoft bought them out. Their N64 strategy amounted to get lucky on Goldeneye and then lose the license and make a carbon copy sequel, and make collect-a-thon platformers that don't age well

A new Banjo platformer would still be lovely though

Thoughts? Opinions? Discuss.

EDIT: Also on a much less interesting note, here's an hour of Dinosaur Planet (Starfox Adventures Dinosaur Planet pre-Starfox)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOVBRJToVDY

This one's the same game without the arwing sequences and running on the N64. Plus all the mild differences you'd expect with adding Starfox

Hard to believe this thing became canon

Entertainment / Tommy Pickles was in a real bind
« on: July 27, 2012, 08:42:34 pm »
Please play this video while reading this post:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_Hx8GPR8OM

Tommy Pickles was in a real bind. His campaign manager had just called him thirty minutes prior to inform him that the Kirijo Group had just pulled ten million dollars in donations from his campaign fund. "It doesn't matter" thought Tommy. "They can disagree with my politics all they want. All that matters is that the stock price on Pickle's Toys, LLC stays high."

"Oh yeah, and that I capture this bigass shadow sitting in front of me trying to rip my brains out." For you see, dear reader, it is the Dark Hour. If you are unaware, it is a time when evil creatures called shadows feast on the few humans who accidentally transcended into this alternate dimension. But Tommy's purpose here is no accident; he must continue the research the Kirijo Group started fifty years prior. Tommy was just a baby when the incident at Gekkoukan High occurred, and as an adult, dedicated his life to science. He became very interested in faster than light travel and determined that if there were no other way to travel through dimensions, he would have to reopen the Dark Hour that a group of teenagers closed forty years prior. He succeeded, but then found another stumbling point: nobody can enter the dark hour without a Persona. What use could his plans for space travel be if only a select few can use it? His life's work would be ruined. He may even have to work in fast food. And so Tommy taught himself how to use a Persona, Jack Frost, by using images of death. Death of his childhood friends.

Yes, its true. Chuckie was shot by a sniper in his youth. Poor Tommy was traumatized for life. In secret, he always had the potential to use a Persona, because he was always tied so closely to death. He merely needed a way to awaken his power. And science allowed him to do it.

Tommy planned on using money from Dil's business venture, Pickle's Toys, LLC, to fund research on how to convert the shadows into FTL "fuel caps". It seemed more ethical than killing the first born child of every man on the planet, thus forcing Persona on everyone. Unfortunately, such research is expensive. And in order to truly finish his work, he would need to be President of the United States of America, so that he could setup a government agency in charge of black ops time travel research. The Kirijo Group donated a large sum to his fund. Tommy found it ironic that they would pull support once they found out he was messing with the shadows. Hypocrites! Do they not see the brilliance to his madness?

And so Tommy raised the gun to his head, finger squeezing the trigger. "Shadow," he gloated, "you picked the wrong day to !@#$% with Tommy Pickles."

---

Chuckie couldn't be much more dead even if he tried. In fact, he's been dead for nearly 47 years. A Lithuanian sniper took a potshot at his head. And then he died. He watched Tommy from the afterlife. Chuckie worried for his friend's soul. "Tommy's blind ambition will damn him," Chuckie thought. And what of his run at the presidency? Surely Tommy wouldn't run under the Republican ticket? Not after all that talk in his twenties about "Occupy Wallstreet is the future bro. I know you're listening somewhere out there Chuckie. Some day I will have the power to bring you back. And then I will eat lunch at Popeyes. Because Popeyes is delicious."

Tommy never ate at Popeyes that day. He had a fresh sandwich at Subway.

"Tommy..." Chuckie contemplated. "Be careful my friend."

---

Lil' was working the night shift. "The work of a prostitute never ends" she thought with a heavy sigh. She had three more appointments left before she could hang it up for the night. One of them was with an old friend. The moon looked pale green tonight. She had never noticed that before. "Strange..." she thought. "You do a double team with a couple of Mexican midgets with gang green and you start seeing green everywhere. Oh well." She trudged along to her next appointment. Her old friend, Tommy Pickles, would be waiting for her.

---

"PERSONA!" Tommy shouted as he pulled the trigger. A wave of cold swept over his body. The line between life and death blurred as adrenaline overtook his system. Sometimes he still halfway expects to see Reptar appear in front of him everytime he does this. Once again, he is disappointed to see Jack Frost. "That's not Reptar" he tries to mutter. He finds that when his Persona is out he's not capable of controlling his body. He is an empty vessel, without a soul, waiting for his master to return.

This time, something is wrong. His evoker drops to the ground and he starts to panic. Jack Frost had a goofy grin on his face, which was normal, but somehow it seemed more sinister. The shadow began to cower in fear. Jack Frost's color was changing... Something was definitely not right. Tommy's vision began to blur. He could barely make out this... this thing. Black Frost. Tommy's personality had changed in his pursuit of power, and thus his Persona reflected it. This was a Persona of destruction. Tommy's self destruction. What could he do??? Black Frost casted Mudo on the enemy. It exploded into a gooey, ectoplasma-y mess. That shadow wasn't the villain. No. No villain could be brought down by Mudo.

"Tommy...?" Oh !@#$%, Tommy thought. What the !@#$% is Lil' doing here? And why did she bring her herpes rashed ass here?

---

Lil' became interested in stripping after that incident nearly 48 years ago when she saw Phil's penis. And Tommy's as well. Chuckie was a prude, and that's why he deserved to get shot by a sniper. If all the boys had penises, but she didn't, then she wanted to see as many as possible! Then maybe, just maybe, she'd be able to touch a few. She was living the dream.

She approached Tommy's house, disregarding all of the coffins on the street. "Halloween must be early this year" she thought. After all, it was November, and some people liked to get a jump on the holiday season. She knocked on the door to no answer. So she climbed through the window, as Tommy instructed her to when this arrangement was made. She called out her suitor's name. "Tommy!? Are you there?" No answer. She walked down the stairs to the basement.

"Tommy...?" Tommy looked like he'd seen a ghost. Some kind of black monster, eleven inches long, was standing in front of Tommy, proudly erect.

"What if it hurts Tommy?" she thought. "I'll never be able to live with myself! !@#$% this gay earth, I have to end this right now"

Lil' found a gun on the floor. She picked it up, and put it to her forehead. "Just like I practiced," she thought. She pulled the trigger and felt a sudden cold come over her body.

---

Spike was about as dead as a dog could be. He had eaten far too much bacon and died of heart disease. Chuckie and Spike watched the events unfolding at the Pickles mansion from above.

"Spike? Why do you think Tommy turned to demons?"

"Arf!"

"Spike you're a !@#$% !@#$%."

---

Penthesilea arose from the sea of Lil's soul.

"Tommy..."

Lil' was struggling to stay awake. The power swept through her body and she wasn't quite sure how to handle it.

Suddenly, it all stopped. Everything returned to normal, including the color in the air. The Dark Hour had ended.

A swat guard entered the premises. He shot Lil' in the face 23 times and then planted a bag of cocaine by her dead corpse. He then kicked Tommy in the balls and shouted "TANGELA, USE BIND!"

"What?" Tommy exclaimed. Suddenly he was home. Chuckie sat across from him playing Pokemon Red, beating the !@#$% out of him with Tangela.

"Haha I win Tommy!" he shouted.

Indeed. Tommy Pickles was in a real bind.

---

Tommy Pickles grew up to be a deranged serial killer and received the death penalty in Texas after murdering twenty three children in cold blood. His last words were "Orpheus! Give me power!" before the lethal injection. May God have mercy on this poor deranged man's soul.

Characters / Box
« on: May 23, 2012, 06:46:53 pm »
I'm going to make this entry WIP since I don't have an image ready for him yet (Nor flash on this computer :P) and there's some dead time right now which'll let me write up his bio at least

The following character will potentially be appearing in a commercial title at some point and thus is subject to changes after the character contest is over, in terms of visual design, biography, history, mannerisms, and anything else you could think of

Box

Box is the third member of the Pwn Squad. He is a man-eating fox, useful in situations where the Pwn Squad must devour men. These situations however are quite rare. One time the Pwn Squad was attacked by an alien, and when the Squad asked Box to eat it, he couldn't, as it "is an alium, not a man!11!53!q!" Jar ended up being the one to save the day as Box was unable to do anything to the alien. Box is prone to stupid and inane comments at times. When the Pwn Squad is racing after Snickers after stealing all 40 pies from the Pi Vault, a most heinous crime indeed, Box decides he wants to stop for tacos. Jar tells the group he hates "tacoes", but then Box says that Taco Hut is just a few yards ahead. Dude says he will eat "liek 12 beef tacoes" before they are attacked by Engages, evil mechanical cellphone robots of doom. Whenever Box says something stupid (Which is fairly often) somebody in the group will tell him to shut up. Occasionally the group will engage in dialogue, usually leading to a random new conversation completely unrelated to the situation at hand, thereby enraging the Pwn Squad's enemies.

Box likes to play video games. His favorite game is Mach Speed the Chinchilla HEROES, a game about a lazy slow chinchilla wearing a cape and his speedy turtle/mouse friends. Mach Speed often tells Box to shut up, breaking the fourth wall in the process.

Box will randomly become wide. Don't ask.

Sometimes Box's tail catches on fire. Things like this happen.

The best way to understand Box as a character is to see him in action, as a character's nuances are often exemplified by their interaction with other characters. As such, I will post comics here

- comics will go here -

I will be completing this entry later on before the deadline's up

Also there's no forum option under community, its a little bit annoying how the DICKBUTT menu changes between the forums and the CMS. Its harder to navigate when its not consistent, makes the site feel disjointed

Yeah.

Like display names I mean

I'd like to be able to use Walnut as a display name and keep walnut100 as a login name. Doesn't SMF have this functionality built into it anyway? What gives?

The main site is obviously busted for the moment, and working on the layout for my site I know that it takes time to fix these things.

Until then though, could we just get a redirect to zfgc.com/forum from zfgc.com? Its a pain in the butt having to type in /forum and I'm willing to bet its driving a few visitors away who don't know the manual URL

Feedback / Four new skins - Please add them!
« on: December 26, 2011, 04:09:24 am »
http://www.gd-u.com/files/nuZFGC/nuZFGC.rar

I'm sure some of you remember our nuZFGC project from a while back, when we wanted to make a new website, new skins, upgrade the forum software to 2.0 (Obviously this much is done now), and put in some new community driven things. All that fell through ultimately, of course, but we still have the skins sitting here.

Now that we're on 2.0 I think it'd be nice to be able to use these old skins. We've got Deku Brown, Kokiri Green, Goron Red, and Zora Blue, and they all look really nice and would complement the two skins we have already perfectly. They were made for RC2 I do believe but they should be compatible with the site out of the box. You can ignore the site files, the only important thing here are the theme folders.

I would LOVE to be able to browse the site with the deku theme personally, and I hope you all consider adding these :D

Credit to Porkchop for making these skins btw

As in, make the forums on zfgc.com link to here instead of SMF1 if posting is disabled there <_<

Make it zfgc.com/old or something. Its a backup anyway no sense in making it the primary deal

http://www.destructoid.com/microsoft-looking-into-possible-misuse-of-xblig-ratings-197544.phtml

Quote
As far as Xbox Live Indie Games are concerned, outside of what little word-of-mouth promotion a title receives, the only other real way awareness is raised is through the top-rated games section on the Xbox dashboard. It's, well, pretty crummy.

Unfortunately, the current system for rating games between one and five stars allows anyone with a free Xbox.com account to rate as they wish; even if they don't play the full game, the trial, or anything. This is causing problems for developers like Zeboyd Games, maker of Cthulhu Saves the World.

Long story short, XBLIG College Lacrosse: The Video Game asked fans on Facebook to rate the game highly, in order to inflate its position. Now, Zeboyd's title has mysteriously seen a slew of negative, position-dropping reviews out of the blue. It's alleged that the two are related, although this is clearly the sign of a bad system. Microsoft is "investigating a possible misuse of ratings."

Sad that it takes a story like this for action to be even potentially taken, but what else is new?

As a spare time 'garage indie dev' I'm always looking into more information on how to market my game when I finish it, so I have an idea of what kind of environment I have to work against to market it to the general public. Between Sony not having any system in place for 'garage' indie developers to submit content, Nintendo not accepting content from anyone without an office (Save the World of Goo developer to save face for PR), and Microsoft doing nothing to protect the interests of indie talent, its pretty vexing trying to jump over what's obviously still a very high barrier of entry. How do they expect indie developers to succeed when they allow crap made overnight onto their service next to high quality titles, bringing them down by association? And when anybody can rate any game whatever they want without even playing the demo? That's insulting, especially when you consider how much less exposure an indie title will receive in comparison to a AAA budget title. Every vote counts when you're drawing from a pool of 10 - 20 votes. And then in the past they've made blunders like hiding the Indie Game store behind some avatar crap, as if more people will see the games digging through 30 menus rather than having them up front.

Microsoft, what's your real aim for the indie channel? Are you trying to use it as a tool to scout talent for Rare? Because you certainly aren't doing a very good job of watching out for the little guy's interests. What do you guys think?

Discuss.

My favorite horror game is Condemned. It is great because its the only game I've ever played that would make me jump AND be able to psychologically scare me. Neither Resident Evil nor Silent Hill can do both.

« on: January 05, 2009, 05:24:13 am »
http://www.zfgc.com/forum/index.php?topic=33023.0

Last time, on ZFGC, a fight broke down in the char contest 08 board, and the tranquility of day to day forum going was shattered as two worthy competitors came crashing into the forum's sticky after a year long journey through space (and time. Mostly time)

But wait! SARAH PALIN'S IN DA HOUSE! Grizzle's friends had already used the power of the voter orbs to restore power to the hero, but the dark lord Administrator came tumbling down from space, negating Grizzle's energy boost.

Sarah Palin won out!

But as these events unfold, a new more sinister evil approaches the forum's sticky. Could it be? A battle royale! How will this turn out? Could this be the end of our fighters?

Find out today, on ZEE EFF GEE SEE

« on: January 05, 2009, 04:54:29 am »
We'll find out in five days. You are allowed to change your vote, votes are anonymous until 5 days from now.

Battle Royale settings usually change up the results, so its not as straightforward as 2 on 2, 2 on 2, then the winners against each other. This does not affect the main contest, consider it a side contest of sorts.

And don't worry, I've got more interesting stuff planned for the semis and finals as well ;)
