I was on GMC again and I checked up on a zelda rpg project which I though was going to fail and it's progression since its crappy form is so much better. Now this got me wondering. Could Zelda ever have RPG traits without it truly affecting the gameplay? Now this is a discussion instead of a feedback as I already am working on a Zelda game which I ain't giving up. Now at a first glance, it does seem possible, however I have a few notes.
-How would the hearts system work now?
-How would the damage work now?
-Would enemies level up with the player?
-How high can the player level up to?
-What about the items?

Those are the points which in my opinion prevent a zelda rpg. Though looking at that user's attempt at it, Im not to sure about my doubts anymore.

Anywho, discuss!

Simple:
If you want a zelda with rpg elements, teh best series to base it on would have to be the Mana games.
More specifically, seiken densetsu 3 or Sword of Mana.

Also would be the best way to leave it open for puzzles.

I always thought that Zelda + Mana = Win.

Yeh but Mana always had that "wait til attack" thing going on. Which for zelda would be terrible. And the weapon+spell leveling was awful.

Not Sword of Mana.
I still have it.  it uses a combo system with timing of the attack.  Press aatack in the proper sequence and you get a quick 3 slash combo that does more damage per hit.

It's really a good combat system for a GBA game.

Zelda does kind of have some RPG elements already.  You upgrade your stats (number of hearts, capacity of magic meter, item capacities), your weapons and items, and Zelda 2 actually had a level up system.

I don't want to talk about Zelda 2...I hated it...

Oh yes, it is definitely possible. Zelda 2 is one example, but I think Bludleef's Sage Knight is also an RPG. However I don't know if it is still in development. He does not post anything about progress at ZFGC.

Zelda II is a beautiful game.  I don't understand the hate for it :/
My only gripe would be that I wish it had a weapon and armor system as well. :D
But that is also a good rpg system to base a Zelda game on.

But in Zelda you find all your upgrades, unlike RPGs where you fight for experience points and money to buy stuff (or shut the game off because RPGs are so boring).

QFT although I've never beaten it...
Zelda II shows that Zelda really could work as an RPG, and as stated, Zelda already has those "RPG Elements" such as status increasing through Heart Containers and other methods. While not exactly RPG-like in exp or other statistics, there is growth as the game progresses in these stats and the player's own skill in using the items/skills given.

Zelda already is an RPG.

It's just an action-adventure RPG.

I think so obviously as I am attempting to make a more strictly RPG Zelda in Sage Knight.

...You don't play many RPGS do you?  lol.  True, many of your weapons are bought, however a lot of them are also found.  Plus, There's quite a few upgrades in Zelda that you can buy (Hylian Shield for example)

To be on-topic, I believe it can. All sorts of series can become any genre, with just the right touch.

I want to say Fortress, but that wasn't really an RTS.

But I want to see this now. :P

it's possible, but you don't have to keep all the elements there, just think in MarioRPG.. . it was still Mario, but it wasn't a plataformer, and it was really different yet kept some similar formula..

Super Paper Mario was an excellent clash of RPG and platformer IMO
