Updates / Afluent in Game Maker?
« on: March 22, 2009, 07:16:33 pm »
Prior to the launch of the boards pertaining to the new Community Project, the structure of those maintaining and primarily helping out on the Minish Cap engine for it needs to be somewhat finalized. Those doing this would need to know how to program/script in Game Maker.

So, if you want to help out with the initial setup, reply to this news item/topic with an example of something substantial you have done in Game Maker - already having worked with the Minish Cap style as well would also be beneficial.

I am putting this poll up to see what everyone wants to do. So yeah, opinions on this would be good. We are going to do an open source, Game Maker engine as the other part of the project as well.

A few days ago, ZFGC affiliated with a newer forum called Deku Leaf Island. This partnership will involve some of our news items posted over there and in addition some of their news items may be posted here. Obi-Wan Shinobi is their leader. Deku Leaf Island focuses on articles, Nintendo news, and monthly raffle prizes such as signatures, avatars, and more.

So yeah, just so you know.

Community Announcements

-- There is less than a week for the participants of the Themematic Original Music Composition Contest to get their entries in! However once they do there will be some neat audio to listen to, so look forward to it.

-- There have been been some board changes recently. The Scrapped board and old community project have been moved to the Archive, and in turn the Archive has moved to the ZFGC.com category. The Projects board has also been renamed and moved to the Projects category.

-- The next community project is most likely going to be a Game Maker engine and some game remade using that engine. The game that is going to be remade hasn't been decided yet but it could be anything from Wind Waker to Majora's Mask to the Gameboy Zelda games.

-- There has been some discussion over what is going to happen to the community, but nothing has really been decided yet. Over the next few days specific user input will be sought after and if you want you are free to PM or IM me, 4Sword, if you have any questions or specific input.

I pride myself in being a top student, but math I simply do not get all.  Well, I missed two days of school and O the JOY I missed the days our Trig teacher started a new lesson and when I come back she refuses to show me how to do it.  We're doing Trig identities and I think I get it alright, but I don't understand how working some of these problems actually... works.  Actually, I just don't get how to add and subtract with radicals, I can do the basic stuff, but my problem is like this (I don't know how to get it to look like a math problem)

1 + the square root of 3 over 2, all over 1 - the square root of 3 over 2.

Understand how to simplify this I do not.

-- The Themematic Original Music Composition Contest has started. Participants have two weeks to work on what they are entering. In essence the deadline is March 21st at midnight at the latest. If most of the entries come in sooner than that, the contest could start sooner for those that are entered.

-- Is there something that you want to see happen on the forum or the site? There is a topic in the Announcements section of the forum which is seeking suggestions as to this. Anything reasonably asked or put forward will be addressed.

-- The news items on the site could use some comments as a little work gets put into them. You don't have to say much either, comments can be short. It is helpful to know who is viewing the site though so that its frequent viewers can be accommodated better.

Project of the Month - February 2009

The Legend of Zelda: Secret Depths of the Unicorn's Lair

Forum Topic | Site Page

Developer: Janet Merai
Language: DX Studio
First Posted: December 24, 2007
Last Update: February 21, 2009

Throughout ZFGC's history it has been rare to find a 3D project. Whether it be for perceived difficulty or just that years back it was not feasible on a technological scale, creating such a project was just not something that was done. In fact, 2D fan games are mostly what we are known for.

However, the Project of the Month for February happens to be such a 3D project. Not only has it defied the conventional approach, but Secret Depths of the Unicorn's Lair has had a longevity spanning years. That is considered amazing when quite a few projects fizzle in months if not weeks. Beyond that, for the specific month of February, this project by Janet Merai has garnered significant attention with its multiple updates. If you have not seen The Legend of Zelda: Secret Depths of the Unicorn's Lair yet, you should now or you'll regret not doing so.

Game Story/Plot

Years have past since Ganondorf was defeated and banished to Sacred Realm by the combined efforts of Link and the sages. The journey Link had made after parting his long destiny with Zelda faded under the stains of time. The Hero of Time had looked for his lost friend for a long time and made a new one in the process while in town of Termina.

Since then, years have passed until he went back to a place he calls home, where he was once seen as a person - Kokiri Forest held his nature and origin. The death of the Great Deku Tree, the Deku Sprout's wisdom, and a friend from his childhood reunite with him to aid his wits and courage to baffle the throes of evil... or is what he is fighting evil at all?

Take Link's blade of time back from its roots and find out what this commotion is all about. Will you allow the Blade of Time to bleed or shine?

Developer Q & A

Q: The original inspiration for your game might be a little vague to people now. Refreshing everyone's memory, what is your game based on?

A: It actually started with just a few simple screenshots really, that turned from wanting to create a 3D remake of the left out beta and eventually spawned into an actual beta... which is still being created as we speak.
The entire game is based entirely on Ocarina of Time's originating story but takes place several years after Link's adventure in Termina.

Q: While you have stated that this takes place after Majora's Mask, with the concept first appearing in an early beta of Ocarina of Time, does this cause any inconsistencies (e.g. Link's age in your game and his age at the end of Majora's Mask)?

A: Me and a few writers were somewhat hindered with that exact thing ironically.
I just thought of what it would be like if an entire story-line just fit into the game itself and decided to spawn the idea of Link returning to the land of Hyrule several years after his last known adventure.
Strangely enough it was actually, at first, going to be Child Link waking up from returning from Termina back in his original house in Kokiri Forest... but somehow none of that actually fit at all, so the story was changed dramatically to what it is now.

Q: Since you started work on your game prior to the release of Twilight Princess, did the release of Twilight Princess compell you to change something in your game?

A: That is quite a funny question, Twilight Princess had no significant change on the "Unicorns Lair" project actually, I even beat the game a few times myself and it hasn't changed anything in the planned game project.
However, the next generation Zelda game we have planned (high definition graphics and innovative game-play) was inspired by me thinking of a new challenge and from checking out left-over stuff in Twilight Princess, go figure.

Q: Your game has been around ZFGC for a while, how is it that you've been able to keep working on it?

A: I have a stubborn attitude and dislike not finishing what I start, I suppose you can say I can't keep something unfinished.
My motivation to become a game developer drives it, plus the idea of seeing my creations in their live 3D form kind of makes me excited too

Q: What is DX Studio and would you recommend it to someone who wants to create a project similar to yours?

A: DX Studio is the 3D engine, not only for games, my team uses to create the games we plan and also helps both the artist, writers and programmer work and collaborate together.
As for recommending DX Studio to others... yes, I would but the problem is not a lot of people dedicate themselves enough to create a game let alone take the time to.
As long as you have a goal, game and idea plus a concept to drive your game, don't forget the resources, I definitely recommend this engine to anyone capable of crafting such games

Q: What is the most difficult aspect of creating Depths of the Unicorn's Lair in 3D?

A: That would be dictating what makes the game mix well with a new story, plot, artwork and other factors that play into the game.
Most of the time I have problems debating what I want to put into the game and take out... some of the time I want to keep it all in but some does not make sense.
Coming up with the creative aspects like 3D models, textures, animations and just about anything to compliment the game's architecture is very challenging yet rewarding to put it simply.
My most challenging aspect is making the game mix together in both past events from games, references, creative game-play and adding features and other aspects into the game without ruining a well crafted game.

Q: Have you ever considered doing the project in 2D?

A: A long time ago before Unicorns Lair actually had much of a story, I did a bit of concept work to see how far I could get in the 2D world, but for some reason it just did not fit and the 2D concept project was canned by me.
It was not really fun and heavily boring, but it was just a concept game and a early prototype.

Q: A lot of games here haven't realized the use of audio effects or music, how important are they to you?

A: Most people do not have a music inclined mind and just use other music from past games, I think having a unique sound track to give the game some extra depth and meaning is very important to give players a treat as to what the atmosphere is like.
Can you imagine a game without any form of background music to ambient sounds of water dripping or an enemy very close to you and sounds loud but once away from you and sounds very fr away?
Sound is important as long as it is well crafted and given strong attention to detail.
Creating your own sounds and music makes you stand out as well too.

Q: Is there something you wish you could bring to Secret Depths of the Unicorn's Lair that you are unable to or do not know how to yet?

A: My first idea was actually Wii support, but that idea is kind of limiting and you would have to get a license or something for that, kind of redundant eh?
There is almost nothing I cannot do in 3D modeling, textures, animation and design so most of what I want to get into the game is put in.
On the other hand there are times when I want to do something like program particular things since I have a tendency to put unique or odd things into a game to give it a flare of "uniqueness" so it stands out amongst a lot of other titles but a problem is I lack programming knowledge.

Q: How can those interested in this project best help you?

A: Those interested in helping, not just watching and downloading, could help by contributing their ideas, story-writing ideas, concepts, programming or anything in particular because in the end it all comes to everyone working together.
If others wanted to become a developer, experience is preferred but I give everyone a chance whether the do not know how to do a 3D model or do some basic scripting.

-- The Themematic Original Music Composition Contest is now officially going to happen as well as it is accepting applicants to participate in it. Contact Darklight or Q.K. for information related to this event, or better yet follow the other item in the news for a link to it.

-- The boards Completed Projects, Zelda/Other Development, Scrapped Projects, Ideas and Concepts, and ZFGC Official Contests boards and some categories have been renamed for simplification and styling. The Character Contest board was moved to the Topic Archive, #ZFGC was deleted due to non-use, and all things related to ZFGC University have been removed due to it not being able to progress.

So I actually have employment here on campus now, which is fantastic because not having any money sucks. A lot.

My first job is actually writing for the school paper, the Northern Iowan. I get paid $1 per column inch, so about $20 an article. It isn't much, but I'm getting paid to write, so I'm not complaining. The hours are also really flexible, which is a necessity with my schedule. Here are some of the articles I've written so far in case anybody's interested:

http://www.northern-iowan.org/debate_highlights_students_nisg_candidate_choices-1.1476509

http://www.northern-iowan.org/a_challenge_to_the_status_quo-1.1569307

I also got another job working for a museum here in town as an exhibit. I'm going to be a man named Nile Kinnick, who apparently was an amazing player for the Iowa Hawkeyes in the late 30s and won the Heisman Trophy. He died in a training exercise during World War II. I'm supposed to research him and write a 15 minute monologue which I will perform at the museum twice. I'm getting paid $10 for ever hour I spend researching, writing, rehearsing, and performing the monologue. It's a relatively new program, so I'll have an almost unlimited amount of creative freedom with which I can really make this performance my own.

(H2O)5 => 5*18 = 90
CuSO4.(H2O)5 => mass_of_Cu(63.5)+mass_of_S(32)+4*mass_of_O(16)+5*water(18)=63.5+32+64+90=249.5
So... 90/249.5*100% =~ 36.07%m/m of water (we use %m/m since we're dividing mass by mass; there's also %m/v and %v/v)

You know the feeling of wanting to create a game with that just astounding concept of how the game is going to be like and what you want to do with it.

Its all good and ready to go, you can just imagine what is going to happen, what your game is all about and are ready to surf the net looking for a game engine or build one yourself, but then it hits you as you open the 3D or 2D game engine and sit for 5 minutes telling yourself... just what am I creating?

The News section of the site will have its hidden board on the forum made public soon, so it is important to have news items with more substance. There will be some sections of the forum which the site staff will also enhance. Past negativities will be overlooked if you have a needed relevant skill. You will stil be expected to work well with others and keep certain information private to your staff area. If you neglect your duties or become inactive in them, you'll be removed.

The bare bones minimum is much less than this to get an A.  I'm capable of better work, though and I'm considering working a lot more on it to make it look sexier.

Project is due on Monday.  Comments?  Criticism?

EDIT:
Little more background:
I'm a freshmen in high school, HTML is pretty new to me, however I do have experience in other languages like C, objective C, BASIC, and C++.  My teacher doesn't really know crap about crap and had a very ugly looking site as her example.  This is enough to get an A, but I'd like to turn this into a little project of mine perhaps.

This was done in notepad in about 30 minutes, give or take a few minutes.  The graphics were made in Paint as that's all the damn school provides me with, and the logo was done in Paint.net as soon as I got home.  I'm quite crap at making graphics, but..  yeah.

Oh and Binary Pheonix's color scheme is absolutely sextastic so I had to use something similar.

Hey all. I've done the math conversions for the area of each "screen", so I decided to begin mapping Mabe Village. Here's what I have so far, but it took an hour and a half. The whole thing will take days to finish at this rate. Let me know if I can make improvements to anything; I'll be reloading the image below with the newest "screen" until the entire village is done.

Making a minish cap font is very easy once you got the right sprite.
So add this sprite to your game:

And thats how easy it is ^^. This font doesn't contain letters like á or è or other weird letters like that, but i might add them later.

Big Question (BQ2)

Last week's question: Should Fierce Deity Link be featured in any future Zelda game?
Summary of answers: Of the one response given, possibly. Fierce Deity Link wasn't featured that much in Majora's Mask, but could possibly be featured in an upcoming Zelda game in the same way.

This week's question: Should there be a Zelda game with a plot in which Link dies and cannot be revived by fairies?

According to a little thing I like to call ‘the calendar’, it appears that tomorrow is Valentine’s Day.

Aside from making single people feel bad about themselves and ensuring that Hallmark, Chocolate Makers and Florists won’t ever need to benefit from the government economic bailout program, I have rather mixed feelings about the holiday.

On one side of the coin, an excuse to express yourself to those around you is never a bad thing. But on the other, it’s something you should be doing more than once a year.

That said, if I may make a suggestion in these troubled times:
Forget the flowers, forget the chocolates and don’t even bother writing a card that will be read once then discarded. Instead, look someone in the eye and tell them that you love them.

And then, do it every day thereafter.

So yeah, this line must work wonders...even I want this man's babies! xD

Seriously though, Valentine's day...blagh. Am I right?

It's short and cuts out at the end but that is only because the title screen music will then kick in. Can't think of a name for it though, and the game title, any ideas/suggestions?

Updates / Jar Wins!
« on: February 09, 2009, 04:57:46 am »
Over the course of two or so months, the Character Contest of 2008 has seen many valiant characters go against each other in the hopes of becoming the victor of them all. Some got excluded from the bracket from the get-go, some were revoked for being handled by a duplicate account, one or more quit, one went unattended for part of the contest, one was disqualified, etc.

But through all of that, Jar emerged as the champion of the whole contest. He proved to be so hot that Taco Bell here in the United States had to take their volcano taco off the menu; one for the fact that Jar had more heat and another for the simple taco hating. This hero of encapsulation can now stand amongst the pantheon of past winners. All else with limited exception will fade into the bleakness of obscurity.

So indeed, congrats Jar!

-- The Character Contest is now at the final match! The winner of the last match was Jar, beating Sarah Palin in a controversial counting process upon a tie in voting. The final match is between Jar and the Fartriloquist.

-- The merger of the Weekly with the Big Question as well as the launch of the Project of the Month went well. The Project Roundup is still getting hammered out due to content issues.

Well, tonight, I'm going to perform at not one, but two charity musical evenings. But, wait, that's not all!

I'll be playing three sets in all, seven different songs, none of which I have ever performed live in front of an audience before. Only one of them is by a band that I have ever covered before.

(and it gets worse...)

Only four of the seven songs will be solo: for the last song of my second set, I'll have a backing chorus of four people, who I have thus far been unable to practice with all of them present. Only practiced with each of them like once. On Thursday night.
The third set will be with a band, who I've only been practicing with since Monday.

And, finally: the first charity show is in Reading, and i'll be (hopefully) finished at around 8:45 - then I'll have to make it the 35 or so miles to Oxford within an hour and fifteen minutes on icy roads in order to make it to the second show.

So, yeah, why the !@#$% do I let people talk me into this !@#$%?

Updates / [FINAL DESTINATION] Jar vs. The Fartriloquist
« on: February 05, 2009, 04:33:46 am »
http://www.zfgc.com/forum/index.php?topic=33372

With the previous match ending in a tie, it was decided that the winner would be chosen by accumulated points throughout the entirety of the contest. And Jar, nudged out Sarah Palin in this fashion. There has been some contention over the validity of this process, as Sarah Palin possibly did not get a full amount of votes in a previous match due to disqualification of one of her opponents, but meh. Drama!

The final destination match is between Jar and the Fartriloquist. If you don't know who they are by now, you haven't been paying attention. If you have though, voting closes in a few days and at that time, the winner of the Character Contest 2008 (I know right, it's like a kooky time machine on the fritz) will be crowned.

So vote!

Project of the Month - January 2009

Ocarina of Time 2D

Forum Topic | Site Page

Developer: ahmio
Language: Game Maker
First Posted: October 6, 2008
Last Update: January 17, 2009

Ocarina of Time is considered to be one of the greatest Zelda and overall games of all time. And without it, Zelda Fan Game Central would not exist. A two-dimensional Ocarina of Time fan game and its popularity are what began this place and ever since then other games of the same persuasion have appeared here ever so often.

It is by coincidence that January's Project of the Month is an OoT2D attempt. The project was chosen for this award because over the past month it has had frequent updates and interest. In addition, those updates have included screens, demos, etc. The project has received a bit of interest and for a new user to these forums the project is doing alright. If anything, Ocarina of Time by ahmio has for at least the month of January shaken part of the development here out of the doldrums.

Game Story/Plot

"As a young boy, Link is tricked by Ganondorf, the King of the Gerudo Thieves. The evil human uses Link to gain access to the Sacred Realm, where he places his tainted hands on Triforce and transforms the beautiful Hyrulean landscape into a barren wasteland. Link is determined to fix the problems he helped to create, so with the help of Rauru he travels through time gathering the powers of the Seven Sages." - Zelda.com

Developer Q & A

What do you think of this award?

    Pretty nice!

So why did you choose to make Ocarina of Time 2D?

Cause everyone else that tried it failed... lol.

Who would you consider to be the biggest inspiration for the project, Nintendo for making the original or TheRealMethuselah for showing that it could be made into a fangame?

    TRM.

In terms of updates, how is it that you are able to show off so many so frequently?

I just make it look like so much... >.<

What update thus far are you most proud of?

    Probably the Deku Tree.

What game mechanic or feature are you looking forward to working on? Water Temple?

    Epona!!!!

Do you worry about the GML code getting inefficient or buggy?

    No. Not really.

Have you run into any limitations in Game Maker that have proved frustrating?

Yes. The Tile Editor. They should make it as it was in GM5.

In terms of the graphics, were you always set on LTTP or did you think about venturing into different styles?

I thought about MC style for a bit....

Is there anything on the project that the community could help out on?

YES!!! Graphics and music would help a lot!

Community Announcements (CA2)

-- The Character Contest is now past all the Battle Royales and is winding down, with almost the semi-finals being over. The previous match winners of the week were Sarah Palin and the Fartriloquist. The current match is between Jar and Sarah Palin.

-- The Project of the Week is no more! The Project of the Month is now launched. In addition to being named "Project of the Month", a project chosen for the honor will have a news item about it, will be featured on the site for a month, and will have its topic stickied.

-- While it is not finalized yet, the likelihood is that for three weeks of each month, there will be a news item series called Project Roundup. The one week it isn't around is for the first week of the Project of the Month being announced - this gives it some of its own space.

-- The Big Question is now being conjoined with the ZFGC Weekly itself due to lack of replies to the Weekly as well as a removal of one of its sections. All this means is that to answer the Big Question, you just comment on the Weekly.

Big Question (BQ2)

Last week's question: Considering that Ganondorf and Vaati have been featured in more than one Zelda game, should another villain like one such as Majora or otherwise be featured in a future game instead?
Summary of answers: While the old villains were good, seeing a new boss would not be so bad either. Considering that the DS game had a new villain, a new Wii game could use one too if that would work.

This week's question: Considering that it is hard to get input elsewhere, does anyone have any other ideas for the Weekly or gripes with its current state?
