Entertainment / Anyone still watch lost?

As the title asks.

What are peoples' thoughts on the current situation with the story, series and characters.

I think the whole time travel thing is the stupidest idea ever and the show has been dragged for too long, and flashbacks/forwards are confusing.

Sooo any fans or haters out there?

Entertainment / Fear 2/P.O
« on: February 12, 2009, 11:39:34 am »
I finished Fear 2 in a 13 hour run on normal difficulty, here are the thoughts.

Story
The game's story has a good balance of your team, yourself (Michael Becket) and Alma. It does continue the story from 30mins before the end of Fear 1 onward. There are never any cutscenes, it's all from first person, which definitely works as it does in other games.

If you haven't played Fear 1 you won't understand the whole back story, but get enough information to understand it in general... which is good enough, same applies to all franchises (eg Halo) really.

I won't summarise the story here, read wikis.

The end of the game is not a complete end, there is a twist that feels like something not well thought through by the developer... but it does allow there to be a fear 3 if I understood it right.

Shooter/Horror
The game is a solid shooter, gives you sections of controlling a Mech, sections of sniping, sections of general infantry and a solid choice with weapons.

The mech sections felt like they could have been better, I found them a little disappointing due to confined locations. But when you consider the city is destroyed... sort of understandable.

The horror theme is great at the start of the game, a good balance between spooky jumpy stuff, Alma (I !@#$% myself) sequences and shooting sequences. However, the more it goes on, every now and then you get what seems to be never ending shooting sequences that personally made me want to stop playing because it was getting boring. That's not a bad thing as such, it is a FPS.

But regardless of that balance change, you discover new enemies and see things happen and things attack you that remind you that you're playing a horror title so don't get too relaxed.

Graphics
The graphics for the game in all areas are excellent. Attention to detail and texture quality is excellent. Gore is absolutely awesome and believable. The blood splatters on walls are excellent, enemies exploding is beautiful. The placing of objects in levels are perfect, the level design itself is for the most part excellent.

Other stuffs
There are only loading screens between story intervals. Keeps you on the edge with no break for a long time.

It is a solid shooter, and at most times a great horror title too, but it isn't the game of the year.

My rough score: 7.5/10

If you plan to play the game, or have done so, or have any thoughts, post =).

Feedback / Merge suggestion
« on: December 26, 2008, 07:34:14 am »
Would it be possible to merge Tech Talk and Gaming & Ent into one board? Tech Talk is rarely active. Just go and look and you'll see. I consider Gaming and Technology very close so a merge shouldn't be too bad.

Just a thought.

Coding / connecting to a mssql db?
« on: September 06, 2008, 11:28:50 am »
Right so I have a Java client sending information via a socket to a c# server, and an "established" Microsoft SQL database/server. Are there any articles on connecting and manipulating data in the database using c#?

Discussion / Zelda: Oracle of Life

While Hoffy semi-knew and gm112 semi-knew others did not. OoL restarted its design phase a few months ago and after grinding my skull many ideas and concepts (lol board name) were created.

Now the reason I'm posting this here is for one to notify people that the game is coming back (if people care) and two I'm looking for people to work on it.

Workers wanted
Spriters and Map makers - Take a concept and bring it to life in the form of art.
Testers - Testers need to have a network capable of hosting games for network tests.

So here's some features.

SINGLE PLAYER

Playing as Link, join your sister on the adventure of a life time. Meet new characters, make new enemies, and uncover secrets.

EXCITING GAMEPLAY

Take the heck and slash rpg genre to a new level with insane combos and magic. A lot of ideas were taken from the KH series after hours and hours of playing it.

LOW REQUIREMENTS

Run the game on any Windows XP+ PC with a DirectX8.1 card, 1gHz CPU and 256mb of memory.

ONLINE CO-OPERATIVE PLAY

Invite a friend to play, anytime, anywhere. Your invited friend will take over your AI sister and assist you in your quest while earning items for their own account. This was taken from Fable 2.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Unlock in-game achievements and compare them to your friends' and others' on the leaderboards. Clearly stolen from XBOX.

The above features have been tested locally and have worked but need extensive testing. Since 90% of the coding is done but 10% of the graphics are done the release date depends on the speed of workers if any apply.

Coding / Multithreading in gm
« on: August 20, 2008, 05:42:44 am »
We all know what threads are and what they do but what about threads in GameMaker. If a user has multiple processors/cores then a thread(s) would boost the performance of a game for sure by putting some processing elsewhere. However a single cored pc would just lag the game.

There is a dll that allows threads... but I wonder... is it even worth the time and effort?

This started as a GameMaker to Java project, but now it's just Java. It will aim to teach you basic Java all the way to GUI, games and networking.

I've seen all * Movie's, and the more they go, the less funny they get. It's getting ridiculous.

I'm wondering if any people would assist me in finding some music. Not really songs, but artists.

I like trance, rock, jpop, death metal, anime/vg compositions... basically everything really... Haha... ha... wtf.

Some artists I love:

Armin Van Buuren
In Flames
Queens of the stone age
Disturbed
Lost Prophets
Chevelle

These are the bands I basically listen to all the time.
