Feedback / Opinions on Smart Talk
« on: September 20, 2007, 10:51:02 pm »
I want to know what you all think about it.  Anything.  Comments on why you think it is good or bad, or whatever.  I need feedback >.<.

Debates / Roster

To keep track of all those inside of this board who are talking, this topic will do just that.  This will keep track of all those who are here and all those who have been kicked out if that happens.  Also, members of this group can give a short (up to one paragraph, about four sentences at most) summary about themselves, and in turn, those kicked out will have their summaries changed to show why they were kicked out.  Let's just hope that it does not come to that.  Anyway, I will start this, if you are in this group, feel free to add things about yourself if you want.

Basically, this post will be edited to just show your name and then a link to your later post in this topic so those looking can just click that to get to your stuff faster (if they are that lazy to scroll).  I will figure it out as we go, and you will to.

Ha, I am thinking of giving you all local moderator abilities inside this board itself, but that may come later as the need arises.

Anyway, yeah, just post about yourself if you want.  I will clear out the lengthy explanation above once this gets going good.

Debates / Weekly and/or Daily Discussions
« on: September 20, 2007, 09:24:31 pm »
In order to give this board some more function, when more members are in the exclusive group, there will be weekly discussion topics, or daily if it goes by better.  These will just be topics that make you think and in that regard serve as interesting.  I do not know fully what they will be, I can't think of everything, but some of them could be world events or just anything you want to be specifically discussed and even more noticed.

I have not figured out the bureaucracy of this board yet, but I think that as members of this group we can set it up by ourselves; well, I will hold back, we are all equals here.

So, any ideas on how you want this set up and executed?

Debates / Smart Talk?
« on: September 19, 2007, 08:40:17 pm »
You know, when your parents tell you to knock off that smart talk, they mean do not talk back to them.  This is just a pun on that phrase, this board is for intelligent discussion and no back sass.  Use it well.

This board is locally moderated and group managed.  This means that to get in, you will have to be let in.  This is inconvenient, I know, but if you want to talk and not be swamped down with something less than that, then it is helpful for all those who want to post well.

So why post intelligently and discuss important things meaningfully?  Not only does it make you not look like an idiot, but it also will help us base possible future staff hirings, possibly.  It would help make your case rather than us just taking your word for it.

All in all, give it a chance, if you hate it, then I hate you.

Oh, and PM the local moderator of this board if you want to be in and are serious about it.  You could also PM me as well.

Discussion / Graveyard Notice
« on: September 19, 2007, 12:12:49 am »
This is the Graveyard.  Most of you have known this, but have viewed its purpose incorrectly.  This board is for dead, stalled, or otherwise non-updated projects that are taken here for posterity and to give new projects that much more chance for attention.

While I am still finalizing this, projects will be moved here if they are over two months old and inactive.  This is subject to change.

If your project is here, however, and you want to begin working on it again, then report the topic or send a PM to either a moderator or a manager.  We will see to it that it is moved back in a reasonable time frame; assume two days at the most.

Updates / Improvements, Notice of Changes
« on: September 18, 2007, 11:43:51 pm »
I am rewording some of the section names, moving some boards around, adding some board, and whatnot.

Here are some things you may have seen:
- "General Discussion" being renamed "Discussion"
- "Project Development" being renamed "Resources"
- "Featured Content" being renamed "Featured"
- Being unable to post in Graveyard
- Debates going away (relax, it is coming back, but with friends)

There are other things on the way as hinted by that last thing I did, so bear with me, and it will all be fine.

Updates / New Moderators
« on: August 17, 2007, 11:05:20 pm »
During the start of the application process I hinted that I would be hiring just one moderator, but near the end of it I extended the possibility to a little more than one.  I decided that due to the quality of some of the applicants that I would indeed expand the number of incoming moderators to three.  I was looking for candidates that would strengthen the current team as well as improve on it.  Anyway, here are the ones chosen and why:

Retro – is reasonably active, seems deserving of the position, and is intelligent.

Ricky – is active at a broad range of hours, multilingual, and is mature at a younger age.

InvaderLupus –  is highly active, is intelligent, and has had previous experience.

If you were not selected and you want to know why then send me a PM.  I will respond as best I can and in a reasonable time frame; I am packing for college, so it might be a while, but I will try.  Do not think that if you were not selected that you were necessarily a bad applicant.  There were a lot of applicants that were considered good and had extremely good single attributes, but I tried to pick out what was best for the job.  And hey, I even chose three, two more then I said I would.  This was partly due to me thinking about it later and also the subconscious reason that it made all applications well thought-out.

Also, do not think that my decision was mine alone.  The current moderation team gave comments on all of your applications, and we are in agreement; with one exception.  That is where and how I made the call.  If you have any questions or concerns, again, send me a PM.  Thank you for your time, and may the new moderators do well.

Updates / New Boards
« on: August 07, 2007, 01:48:17 am »
I have recently added two new boards and have gathered people’s opinions on how they are, but I didn’t get everyone’s, so those who dislike it are welcomed to bring it up in the Feedback board.  I have discussed my thoughts on why the boards are needed before, and it is mainly just to cover a broader area of development so that people aren’t wondering so much as where to post an idea or written work.  So here they are:

Zelda Ideas and Fan Fiction
Indie Ideas and Literature

So give them a try.  I remember when just posting ideas was encouraged, and hey, if you are really fickle, it is an easy way to raise your post count.  However, no spam of course, your posts will need content.  Oh, and if you haven’t applied and are interested, don’t forget about the moderator application:

Moderator Application

Thanks for your time, and yes, I am still thinking about the new members board, but don't have the wheels in motion yet.

Updates / Wanted: One More Moderator
« on: August 01, 2007, 06:18:49 pm »
Due to Sol’s recent resignation, I decided that there is going to be another moderator getting added to the team.  If you feel you are qualified for the position, nominate yourself and get one or two other users to support your nomination if possible.  Prerequisites for submitting a nomination are:

-   Ability to work well with the current moderation team
-   Being able to make fair and comprehenisive decisions
-   A reasonable time commitment to ZFGC; i.e. being on close to every day

Those who do not meet those requirements need not apply, and those who do meet them are thoroughly encouraged to do so.  I should also note that as a moderator, you have to:

-   Deal with reports of possible rule violations
-   View active topics often to correct violations as they might happen
-   Work on ZFGC related things if moderation work is sparce
-   Give opinions, suggest policy, and respond to ideas of mine

I think that should be easy to understand, but if you still have questions or are unsure of anything, send me a PM.  You could also PM an existing moderator to see what it is we do.  Now, without further ado, here is the format for application:

-   Username & E-mail
-   Timezone in relation to Greenwich Mean Time
-   Amount of hours you are online here in a day
-   Reasons why you think you should be a moderator
-   Accomplishments in real life

All applications should be grammatically correct and should show that effort was put into them.  Failure to do that alone will be reason enough to deny your application; slight goofs are fine, but being overly horrible is what I am advising that you do not be.  If anything, just have good spelling and follow the format I gave you in that dashed list.  I hope that this goes well.  Apply here:

The application process will end within the next two weeks.

Feedback / Layout Stuff
« on: June 23, 2007, 04:56:36 pm »
I am going through and making some changes to them and would like to know your opinions.  Here are some things I am doing:

- Making the board descriptions smaller
- Making the board descriptions more grammatically correct and getting rid of the redundancy of "here".
- Making the board descriptions aesthetically good (one line or just something even)
- Shortening board names (Forum Feedback to Feedback, Site & Forum Requests to Requests, etc)
- Reordering boards (Switching Graphical Art and Sounds & Music)
- Getting rid of unnecessary board moderators (Sol doesn't need to be in the Forum Archive, he's global now)

Then I am going to:
- Clean up some stickies
- Possibly look over the rules and make suggestions to Andrew and other managers before anything happens

Thoughts?

Feedback / Subforum Board Descriptions
« on: May 25, 2007, 07:35:11 pm »
I recently moved a request from Forum Feedback to Site and Forum Suggestions, and this is what happened:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a13/4Sword/buggy.jpg

In other words, the first topic in the list of the subforum is having its description being put into the actual sub-forum's description.  OMG, it did it again with this topic.  I have noticed it before in the staff section by either member warnings or complaints, in Other Discussion in Tech Talk, and other places too.

It is not really a big problem, just an inconvenience.  Or is it supposed to be this way?

Debates / Hypothetical Time Travel: Is It Ethical?
« on: January 20, 2007, 03:46:10 pm »
Yeah, so that is the subject of this debate.  Whether or not you view it as possible, that is why the topic is named such, would it be right to go back in time to change events as you saw fit.  For example, would it be right to stop Pearl Harbor from getting bombed by the Japanese prior to the United States' entry into World War II?  Sure we would save American lives, but if the United States never went to war, then Europe might not be how it is now and the world as a whole might be worse.

I would also like to say that this topic relates to the idea that if you go back in time that you can change something an a paradox does not occur.  So, please do not come into this topic and be like, "PARADOX it would not happen".  You could however mention how if something like an alternative timeline were created that it would not be that bad.  However, to debate this well, let us just think of one timeline and not multiple ones.  It makes the issue of changing something more influential.

OK, debate yall.

Other Discussion / metallica48423 wants spammers to come here
« on: July 03, 2006, 11:18:44 pm »
Quote from: The Stabby One
I invite you all to go to ZFGC.com and spam there all you want.  In fact, i'd nearly encourage it, seeing as thats pretty much all they do. You're also welcome to come into our live chatroom and chat it up about nearly whatever you want with people, so long as its not flooding everyone out and its not flaming or derogatory comments.  In fact, you can Click Here and you will automatically join there.

We won't have it here.  Thats all there is to it, really.  Community discussion is not a "whatever goes" board. We all had our chances with spam and it was abused and turned into complete crap with no value whatsoever to the community other than being a trash bin. now people are trying to take it to community discussion.

You're right.  There is no place to post your random insane bullcrap.  Thats not what we are about.  We are a gaming community, and we will not lose sight of the fact that we are a gaming community, where, y'know, we talk about games.

Each and every one of your are welcome to Im me on AIM @ metallica48423 or Commander Stabby if you are willing to debate this and pose your point, but be wary that arguments about what spam is, why dsr sucks without spam, or any other type of similar argument *will* be ignored.  If you have a good reason why you think it should be different and are willing to accept our views on the issue as a part of the big picture, IM me, or IM jon.

Until then, please do not restart this topic
In fact, there is a good possibility that some of the current guests are here for that purpose.  I do not want to cause flaming, but I thought this was relevant somehow, so I posted it.  Not sure if it goes here or in Community Discussion though.  I guess I could ask for your thoughts.

I have tried making a collision to where if your character hits a diagonal block that the character will continue moving   I failed of course, so that is why I am asking for help.  The basic concept of what I am asking is as provided by this situation:

An object is moving left towards a wall with a positive slope ( / ).  When the object collides with the wall, its direction is now based on the slope itself (not necessarily by the slope of the sprite, but a basic 45 degree slope).  The object will thus move down and left.  If the object goes up towards the same wall, the object will then move up and to the right as a result of the slope.

So, can anyone help me?

EDIT: Also, it would be nice if the help could work with x and y movement in a prioritized fashion like Goodnight's walking engine, just to be clearer.

Feedback / Spam in Other Areas Besides Spam
« on: June 03, 2006, 08:30:28 pm »
It has come to my attention that spam is becoming more of a problem in other areas of the forum.  I feel that the existence of the spam forum is the cause for this.  The other areas are not just being spammed because of the spam forum's influence, but the other areas now have more trolling, unnecessary posts, etc.  If we are going to keep the spam forum, I would like spammers to keep their spam and attitudes in that area because it is negatively affecting my experience in the other areas.  I do not know if I speak for others or just myself, but I feel this must be addressed now.  Thank you for your time.

Feedback / Show who is viewing the board index and posts...
« on: April 20, 2006, 09:00:27 pm »
for the SMF theme.  It should be in theme settings somewhere, just switch the box to say show member names.

This would help out to see who all is viewing a popular topic without the need to constantly go to who's online.  Note, the Board default already has this, but the SMF theme doesn't.  At least I think it is that way, I am not sure.

EDIT: Thanks for adding this, I am now locking the topic.  Problem Solved ^_^.
