My complaint with every Smash game except the first one:
Up for jump.

Why?  It accidentally hit up so many times.  I prefer a simple button.
Hence, if Up on the D-Pad was jump, I would only play Smash DS with my Phat.
Those of you who have both a Phat and Lite know the reason why.

There would obviously have to be a jump button. It makes complete sense.

Using that Directional Pad would be hell.

Well...maybe they could do what Rayman did. Have a pretend analog on the touch screen.
I don't see what's so wrong with using the d-pad.  Of course, I don't have DS so I don't know what it's d-pad is like.

I don't know the reason why, actually. Maybe you just have bigger hands?

But, seriously, there's other buttons to jump besides up. On the 64 you could use the C buttons to jump. On the Gamecube you could use X and Y to jump. <_<

He means accidentally jumping due to pressing up on the D-Pad on accident.
EDIT: Just looked at one of the DSLites I have in my house. It does seem to like to slip and press up quite a bit easier. I don't really see what the problem would really be though, then again, I can conform to any controls in a matter of minutes.

The problem I'm talking about is just... you have more control and can turn faster and stuff with an analogue stick. Go play Super Mario 64 DS and you'll see what I mean. Moving around is so !@#$%, especially compared to Super Mario 64. I could do so many things in that game that I can't do anymore because of the Directional Pad.

Well, there was the touch mode in SM64DS. Though it might be harder to incorporate into a Smash Bros. DS.

That reminds me, what would the taunt button be? Or would you tap somewhere on the touch screen for the taunt?

And the fact that, given the choice, I would prefer analogue stick > D-Pad > Touch Screen. Of course, I guess I wouldn't complain with either of the first two too badly, I just really hated the "Touch Screen = analogue stick" !@#$% they were trying to pull.

Well, I doubt an analog stick would be coming anytime soon. I think playing with the d-pad would be fine. It's hard with the Wii Remote because you have to use it to jump as well but a button could easily prevent that problem.

What the heck... I give a serious look at this page of the topic and I find people trying to use the touch screen for Smash... WTF?

Theforeshadower: You can customize your button setup on Brawl. You can also make it so that you cannot jump by tilting the control stick up.

The same can be done for the DS... As for [default] button setup...

A = Standard Attack
B = Special Attack
R = Guard (with +left or +right, evade)
L = Grab
Touch screen: Taunt

X and Y can be used to jump or whatever.

Another possible button setup can be:
A = Jump
B = Standard Attack
Y = Special attack
R = Guard
L = Grab
Touch screen: Taunt

But like I said before, the DS version of Smash (whenever, if ever hopefully) should have the option to allow you to customize your controls. Customization is a beautiful thing...

Also, WTF is this all about emulating the N64 Smash Bros.? The DS is only so powerful- you'd have to port it... And even then, maybe Nintendo could fit more characters in by making it sprite-based... Or maybe making the background sprites, like they did with New Super Mario Bros. I bet they could fit a whole bunch of stuff if they do that.

Up for jump.

Grab an "analog stick simulator"... I doubt they're sold anymore anyhow... But I have one and I used it to play Mario 64 DS. Works decently well once you get used to it.

Of the analog stick simulator? I'll take a picture tomorrow. Too lazy to take one now. Lemmee see if I can google it. I think MadCatz made it...

Edit: Google doesn't show anything... I guess it's that rare now. O_O I bought it at Walmart back when Mario 64 DS was the only game worth buying for the DS...

Control your character with the D-Pad
Standard attacks with the A Button
Special attacks with the B Button
Jump with the X Button, Y Button, or Up on the D-Pad
Shield with the L Button
Grab with the R Button
Pause with the Start Button
Taunt with the Select Button

Pressing A and the D-Pad at the same time does a smash attack. Pressing D-Pad before pressing A does a standard attack. Like in Brawl, there would be an option to customize your controls. My logic is flawless.

Now these controls seem fair to me.

Guess I took too long to post. XD Oh well, it proves that it'd be easy for the developer to come up with a good control scheme.

Yea, it's made by MadCatz.  There's another one called the Thylus, though.
