I saved it as .png, which I thought would make it transparent. Halp plox.

Just saving as png dosen't make it transparent, you need to actually set the alpha value of the white pixels to 0. Open up photoshop if you have it, select the white pixels (magic wand?) and click delete, then save :P.

I used IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/). It's useful for editing images and changing file types, and you can also select transparancies when you save as GIF or PNG.
