Discussion / Super Mario Country-Side, Metroidvania game idea
« on: February 05, 2019, 11:39:03 am »
An open ended side-scrolling Mario game with RPG and elements. This is an idea I've had for a while that I recently fleshed out more. Enemies give Exp, and leveling up slightly increases HP and Jump height (very slightly for jump).

Bowser kidnapped Peach, and shattered the Star of Peace forged by the blacksmith Luigi from a fallen star. The carpenter Mario built a fortress for it to be housed in, which also was destroyed.

Peach says she is allegedly sick of being kidnapped and rescued and agrees to marriage, for Queens need no rescuing. Mushroom Kingdom is now ruled by King Bowser and Queen Peach. Bowser cracks down on immigration and has imprisoned Luigi. Nobody can remember who the famous Mario Bros. are even. The Star Fragments were given to various newly appointed bosses of each area.

Party members can be switched out at any time, and a fallen player must be revived with a 1up Mushroom. Toad is the first to join, as he's the only one who remembers Mario. The ruler of the Toad Hinterlands is Regular Bowser, as opposed to King Bowser in the Mushroom Castle. Regular Bowser is weaker and can only spit a small fireball instead of flame breathe. After defeating him the player gets the Koopa Aspect. By giving it back to him Bowser realizes his power has been fragmented, and asks Mario to help him, despite not remembering who Mario is.

Second party member is Luigi, once freed from the Under Land Dungeons boss.

Areas, a connected world rather than separate levels/worlds (and bosses)

- Mushroom Kingdom -
Mushroom Castle - Captain of the Royal Toad Guard // Queen Peach and King Bowser // Dream Goomba

Toad Hinterlands - Regular Bowser (star fragment)

Under Land Dungeons (via mushroom kingdom sewers) - Zombie Plumber Patriarch

Under Land Graves (via cemetery in Frypan Steppe) - Boo Undertaker (star fragment)

- Lichen Kingdom -
Frypan Steppe - Rock Bowser
Lichen Mtn - White Mountain Chainchomp (star fragment)

- Mossy Kingdom -
Mossy Woods - Queen Piranha Bush // Forest Heart Root Bulb (star fragment)
Lava Swamp - Flame Bowser

- Clouds -
Terrapin Fleet - Paratroopa General (key to Cloud Castle)
Cloud Castle - Emperor Lakitu (star fragment)

Rock Bowser gets Bowser's Shell Aspect, and Flame Bowser gets the Fire Aspect back. Leaving only the Power Aspect with the imposter controlling King Bowser. When Regular Bowser has his Koopa, Shell, and Flame Aspects he will join the Party.

Before entering the Mushroom Castle the player needs 5/6 Star of Peace Fragments found from bosses in various areas, as well as Bowser's Bullet Bill Cannon weapon, found on the Terrapin Fleet of the Clouds area, to break down the door. Toad won't let you enter however unless you've rebuilt the Peace Fortress, with a large sum of Coins and Mason's Bricks. For the completed Star of Peace needs a home or else it will feel cheated and return to the sky, since Stars have a mind of their own.

Endgame,
After defeating the Captain of the Royal Toad Guard, Queen Peach and King Bowser, you regain Bowser's Power Aspect, and a villain called the Dream Goomba reveals he is the one who shattered Bowser's Aspects and the Star of Peace. He is the final boss.

Thoughts?

Graphics / Custom Mario tiles from UMA years ago

Hey long time no see whoever still inhabits this board. I was thinking about an old Mario fan-game I never made, and found some graphics made by another old frequent resident Uma for it. It was going to be "open-world" as in there'd be multiple paths - left, right, and more locations and backtracking like a Metroidvania. I was planning on some RPG-ish elements too, like leveling finding boot upgrades to jump higher, new overalls for more defense, fancy mushroom dinners a health upgrade, finding different types of fire-flowers in the wild for different uses, etc

Man I should make that game still, if only I ever knew how to code. I'm more a music man, and I pictured this game with ambient Earthboundesque Mario music

Entertainment / Re: Do YOU collect?

I collect music, it started with the two big psychedelic jam bands, Phish and Grateful Dead. Because of the nature of the live shows, with lots of moments of full band improv and collectively and spontaneously creating and building music, it makes it worthwhile to own 10+ versions of certain songs.

So I don't really collect anything, maybe I would collect guitars or instruments in general if I had the money and time.
14,186 songs on my external harddrive however, is a collection I guess you could say.

Entertainment / listen to this Norwegian prog-rock album from 2011

Spirits of the Dead ~ The Great God Pan

I guess it's their second album, but it's hard to find any info about this band.

edit: They are an awesome band, with their style being a strange mix of 70s progressive rock, Led Zeppelin, and folk influences. Very obscure band, maybe not as obscure in Norway though. The album is really well produced, everything comes together perfectly. Just check out a track or two at least.

Thanks for all the info. Yes, it is a sad amount of background noise... I think once it gets going for a bit it's less noticeable. Maybe I've just gotten used to it because everything I've recorded for the past year is with this shitty set-up.

Oh I know... I hate recording like this but it's all I've got for now. I was planning on getting a USB mic... but maybe not after you mentioned the problems with layering. So what's my best cheap option for an audio interface

edit; just tried the noise removal in audacity... it sounded all warbly and shitty no matter how much "less" noise I removed...

Sometime soon I will have a more finished version with more than 27 seconds. This was inspired by the poly-rhythmic interlocking repeated guitar riffs from 80s King Crimson.

There are three guitars layered here. Two of them are playing in 5/8 time, the other is in 7/8 time.

Entertainment / Re: Why Zelda II is awesome
« on: November 21, 2012, 04:38:14 pm »
I agree. I think Zelda II is among the best games in the series for the innovation. Other games stayed with a tried and true formula, and certainly improved upon it from time to time. At this point I'd rather see new Zelda games with original game designs, rather than the same game design pasted on to a similar but different plot with a new gimmick here and there

Zelda II was also HARD. Something many games are missing today. It reminds me of the failure frustration / victory satisfaction that old games offered more of. Modern games that do this happen to be my favorite. Dark Souls is the best example I can think of.

I'll answer a few

Leveling up:
I like stats and numbers in RPGs, I don't know why. Experience points, leveling up the player, weapons, armor. I don't think story should have to be sacrificed for complex level-up systems.

Character development / Plot:
I think it can go either way. I love RPGs with a focus on this stuff., but a game like Dark Souls with a real heavy focus on gameplay gives very little character development, yet it's ok because it leaves some mystique that adds a nice touch. They explain just enough, and give peak glances into just how expansive the Dark Souls universe is

What draws you into the world:
Something that is very different from the real world. Graphics and 3D / 2D does not matter much to me. Mostly I love expansive game universes, where the creators thought of much more stuff behind the scenes to the world shown in the game. This enriches the small world shown in the game, by giving the player a sense of reality.

Exploration:
In between open world and linear, more towards open world.

My favorite game is... !@#$% that's hard.
I'll go MOTHER 3, but Earthbound, Fallout 1+2, Dark Souls, and Morrowind are all up there

Until today? What's with that part? Did my favorite game change today? If it did, nobody told me.
