King of Thieves / Order of operations?
« on: April 27, 2011, 02:37:05 pm »
Do you guys think that our directors (or somebody, at least) need to come up with a sort of "order" in which things should be decided? I know that in the game design forum currently, we have several threads going about different aspects. They're all great, but some of them are dependent on the others, as in dungeons require the overworld to be fully realized first before we can place them.

tl;dr how do we ordered game?

You guys probably saw that Minecraft LARP video I posted a while back that I made with some friends, specifically Boris, the guy who plays the main character. We made another one yesterday, and Boris really stepped up his fight choreography. My other very good friend Daniel, who plays the "ninja" at the end, also gave a strong performance. And of course, it was filmed entirely by yours truly :D

We're hoping this video sees the success of the Minecraft one, which got over 180,000 views and was featured on Kotaku, GameInformer.com, and The Daily What.

Entertainment / Me and some friends got featured on the Escapist

Gary Bigham is a self-described "pro LARPer." He decided to take his immense Live Action Role-Playing skills and apply them to his knowledge of the Swedish independent game sensation, Minecraft.

We just shot this video this past Sunday and somehow the Escapist got a hold of it! Sweet! Yours truly was behind the camera and editing, and also played the Ghast. Gary Bigham is a character my friend Boris has made several other videos for.

Discussion / Glory - A Short Piece
« on: September 29, 2010, 06:54:07 pm »
This is something really short that I wrote the other night called "Glory." I'm probably going to submit it to my school's literary magazine next semester, as they love publishing short "flash fiction" like this. Anyway, just wanted to stick it up somewhere where other people could read it.

Glory is in the night.

Glory is the roaring outside my windows, driving back from your house at four in the morning, where the clunk of the shifter and screeching of the tires are the only music that plays. It hangs in the edges of the silhouetted mountains, indistinguishable but unique, that lay somewhere off in the darkness. It’s the red glow of the tachometer, contained by the cheap plastic cowl on my dashboard, with needles that bounce widly as I carve into the corners.

Glory was in your smell. You laughed about how you hadn’t showered in a day or two, and I laughed about how I couldn’t tell. Your hair was a little greasy, sure, but you tied it back and it didn’t matter very much. You were still flowers and softness and warmth, the feeling of sleeping in the backseat of a car as a child while your parents drive you home on some long highway.

Glory was in your dress. Perhaps it had been shorter than you intended, and when you leaned over to kiss me, it might have gotten a bit shorter. I didn’t mind, and neither did you. You almost buried my head in the couch cushion, and I thought we were sure to suffocate together in the friction and the sweat. My jaw ached and your lips were a little chapped, but I didn’t mind, and neither did you.

Glory was how you could talk about him between kisses. So freely, so openly, like he was dead, and you were remembering. There had been so much trouble and despair, and for you, floating was so much harder than walking. I didn’t mind listening. I loved it, even if it meant that maybe I was a memorial rather than a monument. But not all requiems are sad, and I’d rather be a song than a paragraph in the newspaper that no one ever read.

Glory was in the way I felt. I was swept up, exhausted and weary-eyed but begging for more hours in the night, for the next day to never come, for sleep to be an option rather than the outcome.

Glory was in being a little upset, yeah. Glory was in hating that we had to collide at this moment rather than another moment. Glory was knowing that I couldn’t really have you, that you still belonged to him. Glory was in missing you a little more than I wanted to when I backed out of the driveway and saw the lights in your house go out. But glory was also in remembering the feel of your bare legs against my jeans, of hearing your brother walk around upstairs, of repeatedly telling myself “Just a few more minutes.”

Those nights were filled with wonder and overflowed with joy. But the greatest glory was in knowing that even though you weren’t mine, I could still love you all the same.

Entertainment / Considering going back to consoles...
« on: April 25, 2010, 04:28:55 am »
...this summer, with a PS3.

I'm kind of outta the loop these days as far as console gaming goes, but I've been thinking and talking to friends and I think I might buy a PS3 sometime this summer. The system has a lot of exclusives I'm really interested in: Uncharted 1&2, Ratchet and Clank, Disgaea, LBP, Folklore, MAG. I figure I could sell my PS2 and games I never play anymore on Craigslist for a bit of profit to help along with the purchase.

Good decision? Bad decision?

Entertainment / Our Story: A Short Film by Jonathan Dantzler
« on: April 11, 2010, 04:25:22 pm »
This is a film I've been working on for quite a long time that I recently finished. Essentially, it's about unrequited love and its effects on a relationship between a nameless boy and girl. It premiered yesterday on my university campus and was well-received. I'd appreciate it if you could watch it!

And I also very much enjoy Asher Roth and his new mixtape, Seared Foie Gras with Quince & Cranberry. It's a free release, so if you too enjoy rap music, you should get it.

Also, ITT let's discuss and share good rap music.

Anyone see it yet? I overall enjoyed it. The visuals (at least in the 3D version) are absolutely amazing, and will completely suck you in. The story though, well...I mean it's not bad, just nothing we haven't seen before.

It's called "Our Story." These are shots lifted from footage that we got while filming last Saturday. We're about to go film today; after this it should be around 80% completed.

This is the new single from it. So excited :D

Who else is anticipating this album?

My creative compatriots and I have been working on this film since August...and now it is finally done :D For those unfamiliar with Stalin and Hitler:

Longtime friends, dictators, and roommates Adolf Hilter and Joseph Stalin suddenly encounter a bump in their friendship when they both audition for the role of Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof." What follows is a musical journey of love, redemption, and a testament to the enduring power of friendship.

This version is low-quality, but we're going to put an HD version on BitTorrent eventually. It also needs some audio work in places, which we are very well aware of. Comments please!

Anyone else try this out? Game is actually really good for $5. Fun shooting, deliciously cheesy Japanese-style mecha storyline, and really nice graphics for those of us with high-end PCs.

Entertainment / Dwarf Fortress
« on: February 17, 2009, 04:40:57 pm »
I had read a ton about this game on /v/, and decided to finally jump in and try to learn how to play it.

This might be the BEST game I've played in YEARS. It's so deep! You literally manage every single little aspect of almost everything going on...just the terrain generation screen is absolutely fascinating. For anyone with some patience and willingness to overcome the ASCII graphics, it's highly recommended.

And a shot of my own fortress:

Here a bunch of my dwarves are on break in the dining hall, and it appears my food stockpiles are kind of gross: there is a corpse on the ground (probably a rat or roach my cats killed) and a swarm of flies. My stone stockpiles to the left though are looking very nice, with a good stash of conglomerate and chalk to save for making crafts I can sell when the trade caravans come back. Over the winter, they're going to hibernate and expand downwards, probably building private quarters for everyone.

Discussion / Greetings!
« on: December 23, 2008, 05:58:44 pm »
Welcome to the course "Writing a Video Game Story." This tutorial will focus on tips for writing a coherent plot with good dialogue for your game. Your instructor, Dantztron 3030, will focus on several different sorts of stories so that you can apply it to any genre of game, whether it's Zelda, a shooter, or an epic RPG.

I'll teach you how to write a classic and accessible story yet avoid cliches, create conflict without melodrama, write dialogue that is emotive but not over-the-top, and how to make a plot ebb and flow so that it never drags or gets tiresome. Due to the nature of this tutorial being applied to the video game, I will not focus on prosaic style and will instead try to build it around narrative structure and dialogue.

Recommended Software
1. Microsoft Office Word 2003 (I prefer it for ease of use and simplicity for basic writing tasks, and I think you will too.)
2. Final Draft 7 (This is industry-standard scriptwriting software for films, though I use it for games too because of the easily readable and organized format, especially for long-winded, dialogue heavy cutscenes. A free trial is available at https://www.finaldraft.com/products/final-draft/download-demo.php)
3. Imagination (Obviously!)

Prerequisites
1. This tutorial covers only the English language, so it is recommended that our international users have a relatively high level of English comprehension.
2. Knowledge of basic stylistic devices, such as the metaphor, simile, allegory and symbol.

Distribution
All sections of this course will be distributed as .doc files, readable with almost every version of Microsoft Office Word. Final Draft documents will be distributed as .fdr files (some of which may be open to modification as part of the class) and .pdf files either for your convenience or for those who do not acquire the program.

Disclaimer
Not everyone values the same things in a story: therefore, my tutorial is obviously going to have some slight biases towards particular ways of structuring plot. A writer that genuinely wants to learn and whose preferences are very different from mine will acknowledge these differences, yet use the wisdom I hope to impart for their own storytelling preferences. After all, you don't want to copy me...you want to develop a style all your own!

Also, you may think you have nothing to learn from this tutorial. You do. No writer, including myself or anyone else, ever stops learning. I suppose I should have added "a mindset for constructive criticism and self-betterment" to the prerequisites list!

Extra Credit
Final Draft 7 has a wonderful feature called "CollaboWrite." What this does is allow two people to edit the same document, over the internet, in real time! As your instructor, I am willing to assist you when I am free outside of class in these sessions if you need any help or if you simply want some creative input. Feel free to contact me:

AIM: hadoken54
MSN: hadoken54@gmail.com

I can also be found in our IRC channel as "Dantz."

So ready your pens or keyboards! We've got a story to tell.

EDIT: Apparently this is not the correct cut? Hahahaha...I need to talk to my friend in charge of uploading.

Entertainment / Stalin and Hitler: The Musical Trailer 1
« on: October 26, 2008, 03:18:23 am »
DISCLAIMER: This trailer may or may not actually have anything to do with the film.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrKsIe62kNg

For the past few months, I've been working on a project with friends called Stalin and Hitler: The Musical. A continuation of our popular (at least on campus) web series "Stalin and Hitler: The College Years," the musical finds our dynamic duo at odds with each other as they compete for the lead role in Fiddler on the Roof.

It will be a short musical similar to Dr. Horrible. Writing is about to wrap, and we expect to start recording and filming before Winter Break. It will premiere in March 2009 at Appalachian State University's Open APPerture Film Festival.
