I've seen that in a lot of the criticism about the movie, that it's pretentious. What parts were pretentious?

I found the story to not be concrete enough. I'm a writer, so trust me - I appreciate ambiguity. However, I think the film sometimes veered so far into ambiguous territory that it lost focus. That was the weakest element of the film to me, like Aronofsky didn't have the raw skill to capture this huge vision he had, and then got lost in his idea.

For all the film's ideas and visual flair, it still needs to tell a story. Which it does, but not as well as it could.

The fountain is far from being Aronofsky's best film, and it is definitely flawed. However, I still think it was a pretty underrated movie. At times it is pretentious, other times brilliant, but it is always interesting and really, really pretty. I liked it.

Am I really the only one not impressed with Skyrim?  Glad I ended up not purchasing it.  Looks about as good as an average game.  I have been watching both real-life(friends playing it) and 1080p footage of the pc version.

Animations look like !@#$%.

The dirt filters make the entire game look like !@#$%.

Some of the physics are still as laughable as they were in Oblivion.

Particle/effects look pixelated, actually just about every environmental texture falls into this as well.

The menu looks poorly designed.  Cannot tell you how many times I was either watching my friends or a stream and I hear the "oh !@#$%, I didn't mean to pick that up" or "!@#$% I didn't want to steal that" or just grunts and groans about picking up objects and operating the inventory system.

Anyway, I won't be purchasing it until it is around $20 used then I'll buy it for a console instead of PC.  Couldn't give two shits about mods....Shouldn't have to have your fan base fix your game for you(which I have seen several Skyrim mods already do).

Maybe it's just me getting older and more of a critic.  I don't think MW3 is all that !@#$% great either.  Watched my brother play it on his 360 then I played it for a couple hours online.  Not impressed...

Right, but the game is fun. Yeah, it's got its share of glitches (typical of Bethesda) and the graphics may not be perfect (I think they look pretty rad on the PC though) but the game is just so much FUN. Sneaking around towns, slaying dragons, exploring, getting into mischief...Skyrim does all of that so well.

EDIT: To be fair, I do agree with you on the inventory system. I like how streamlined it is but I miss being able to sort stuff like in Oblivion.

I have very, very little time with school, but if you guys want me as sort of an advisor for the story then I might be able to help.

Skyrim's one of the best games I've ever played. Really enjoying it so far.

No love for FF9 in this thread? You guys sadden me.

I said Legend of Dragoon blows, and someone deleted my post. I will say it again: I think LoD blows. Now so that my post doesn't get deleted: I think it's got a horrible translation, awkward battle system, and it's far too linear. Same goes for FFX.

EDIT: FFX's translation is actually fine, but I thought the story was ridiculous.

I actually thought the OoT ending kind of sucked. Obviously amazing game though.

This looks like a pretty cool game. Is there a demo available anywhere?

Nintendo will never get it, but will also never die. It must be nice to be such a popular company that you can basically do whatever you want and still sell games.

King of Thieves / Order of operations?
« on: April 27, 2011, 02:37:05 pm »
Do you guys think that our directors (or somebody, at least) need to come up with a sort of "order" in which things should be decided? I know that in the game design forum currently, we have several threads going about different aspects. They're all great, but some of them are dependent on the others, as in dungeons require the overworld to be fully realized first before we can place them.

tl;dr how do we ordered game?

Am I the only person here who honestly thinks well-done 3D is the future?

Game Design / Re: Graphical Presentation - What style to use?
« on: April 14, 2011, 02:42:35 pm »
I personally really dig the graphical style. Good job. For the registration screen though, I'd make it something a bit more relevant to our project than mountains and clouds. Maybe a skyline of the city? I understand it's WIP, just thought I'd throw it out there.

Keep in mind I don't come from a spriting background, but I think a Link to the Past style with the broader color palette and vibrance of MC would be a good compromise, since our spriters seem to have more experience in that style.

All seem to be great suggestions so far, but I guess she wants something more like Minecraft or Animal Crossing/Harvest Moon. Social games where you can set your own goals without being bored and such. She's sick of FPSs and RPGs, and I kinda am too.

Check out Second Life. It's absolutely nuts some of the stuff you can find on there...

It's not an online game, but me and my ex used to play the !@#$% out of some Soul Calibur II. Try that. I think offline games are generally better for significant other bonding time.

A bunch of the guys I live with in my dorm play this game called Realm of the Mad God. It seems kinda cool, I guess.

Due to my job and courseload, my schedule fluctuates wildly from week to week. I really can't guarantee I can make ANY meeting time. You guys just plan one and I'll meet whenever I can. As most of the story is already written out, my role here is going to be pretty minor anyway.

EDIT: My steam ID is hadoken54.

I think Steam is great, as is Facebook. The new groups feature is really useful for communication; I use it for my actual job and for a Minecraft server I play on.

Also, I would recommend starting a new IRC channel specifically for the project.
