What does someone recommend as a good 3D modelling software (rendering, modelling, surfacing, etc.) ? I'm a beginner, but I want something with good functionality. And chances are with torrents...well price isn't too much of a problem. But I don't want something hulking, like 3Ds. What do you recommend? (Of course free is good <_<)

Most cheap-ass people use either Anim8or or Blender. Both are good and capable, Blender is very powerful, however, it uses Java (a downside for some), and has a steep learning curve. Many people like PovRay a lot too, however, i've never tried it so I don't actually know what it does, exaclty. It may be just a rendering program... I'm not sure.

Well, I use 3 different programs because some either are missing features, or I'm to lazy to learn. I use Wings3d for the actual model then I export it to 3ds for texturing then to Milkshape for animating....

Personally I'd try to do a bit better then me and find a program that can do all three at once....

The best option is Cinema4D, it's really easy to use, and really powerful. Although it's kinda... expensive. http://www.maxon.net/.

I use MS3D but I don't recommend it as it teaches you bad habits in modeling. That and the animation keyframe bindings are VERY confusing. IMO the best program I used was a PLE version of Maya 6.

3ds Max isn't that "hulking". It only takes about 200mb disk space and is pretty easy when you get used to it.

I choose 3ds max, it's got an easy learning curve.  And it does what I need for the source engine =D
