Looks kewl, but thats not beta in the least bit sadly :s... (I believe) that's a presentation-ready alpha they made to showcase development on the project. I do like though how its more... Toriyama-esque in terms of how the world is animated

I've got the Beta on this PC, its really not much different from the released CT; theres a few key things, such as an empty coliseum, and various other little quirks, but as far as the beta goes its about the same as the release.

Bah I wish I could get my hands on this presentation copy though O_O

But even real beta CT was going to better than the original. It had singing mountain, the unused boss theme which was essentially badass, and an incomplete 8th character.

I havent found anything for an 8th character, but that boss theme was used in the beta, and it was rather kewl lol... there was another theme as well that went unused in the final release...

I dunno, I loved CT in its released form lol... That videos version looks far too... unperfected... I mean sure its neat to see so many differences, but it just appears to be unpractical to what the game was supposed to represent, and I think thats why they toned down the overworld a bit... Although the beta is also really fun to play too XD...

meh, Probably it was better we will never know, Crono sword slash pwns, I prefer the new world map it was easier to map and used less tiles than the alpha or beta, Still some stuff looks really good I would say that they just changed the map style for the lack of time, I am glad Akira made the character design.

But early Crono looks soo much better! His walking animation, his attack animation... Waay better than new Crono.

Oh and the other song you thinking of is Singing Mountain. It goes along with the unused moutain area in the game.

Yeah, it is a pretty sweet theme

About the only thing I can see with crono's walk animation is that his arms swing out farther, making it seem more like a beefy walk; lol... it appears to have the same number of frames to the animation though; 4 frames then 4 frames flipped--- I do like the combat stuff though; looks a lot more strategic than what the final version gave us :o

Yeah, I think thats because of the framerate of his walk; its more than likely cycled a little bit slower in the alpha

Hmm... I did look a lil' bit slower... That still doesn't explain why they took out his badass slashing animation though. Seriously, the animation quality was up there with Breath of Fire 2.

I didn't see anything of an 8th character, I didn't even see Magus.
It was just a garbled up overworld sprite people found in the pre-release demo rom of the game.

Saw this before and I wouldn't say it looks better, just different. The overworld is nice though. And why do you say the sword slash looks good? He just walks up and flails his arm a bit :/. Final version is much better

Someone needs glasses... He doesn't flail his arms around a lil bit, he really slashes them like really hard... Plus its range is farther. Maybe he could damage 2 enemies at 1 time if he was close enough to 2 enemies...

In the final game he !@#$% JUMP ATTACKS. How is that not awesome? In this vid he just walks up to the enemy.

The dual slash is just a critical hit, he does it in the final version of the game as well.

Not to mention it looks incredibly un-finished and sloppy. But that's to expect from an unfinished version :p

Not all the time. He walks up to the enemy most of the time...

And I know that, I've played and beaten CT like 500 times. Maybe he got a critical hit in the video?

dunno he doesn't look like a good character >_> IMO he is from the future, either 1999 AD( probably this date) or 2300( it is 2300?) AD.

The 8th character, from what I've read around the net, is supposed to be Schala who is from the snow time place...

That would explain why Schala had so many poses for a pretty minor character...

Maaaaaan... 1999 A.D. ... O_O Woulda been so nice if we could've actually travelled to 1999 A.D.

From what I've heard, the Chrono Trigger planning was a complete nightmare. I don't know the exact details, though... Maybe you'll find something in Wikipedia?

The alpha's combat system is clearly different though; it has a few different mechanics to it than the release did. The slashing's hard hitting feel has to do with the framerate in which theyre rendering the sprites; its all the same, theyre just cycling it at a different speed to give a different effect to it; if you take a look in the sprite rips from CT; all of those animations are in Cronos sheet, and theyre all used in the final release; they're just not as... preliminary as the alpha is showing lol sure its cool how they utilized the animation cycles for the attack, but just didnt feel it worked for the final release *shrugs*... You could heck the rom and make that particular animation for an attack if you feel its necessary to make CT worth playing :P but I personally think CT was complete within itself lol

As for the rumored 8th character; its just that, a rumored character. Just because there was some left over junk data in the outworld player set, doesnt mean theres another character. More than likely what happened was; judging by how active the world map appears in the alpha, they probably had people walking around on the map, or maybe map-related events that require NPCs or something, and thats why theres that extra sprite set. It was probably never obtainable by the player to begin with.

Chronos development was rocky, but not as rocky as Seiken Densetsu 3 :p... but I heard they had quite a few troubles with it. 1999ad is kewl to fly around in too btw, but its really... really buggy lol
