Discussion / Re: I want to get some C++ books...
« on: September 18, 2007, 12:30:10 pm »
Tutorials can be great for those what if situations, but if you need to learn the concept as a whole, you're going to need a book. I looked at this thread for days, hoping that I could somehow find something in my library that inspired me.(library = I collected a little over 100 computer books since I was in HS... I have a ton, that I never even paid for that was given to me by professors or friends) A wide assortment of books does help being that no two projects rarely follow the same path.

Back on topic... alas, I still couldn't really find one that I have to share, but there has been one that I'd love to have(when it's cheaper) that really seems to cover it all:

http://www.amazon.com/C%2B%2B-How-Program-5th/dp/0131857576/ref=sr_1_8/103-6078568-8525442?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1190118138&sr=8-8

There's my 2 cents... I'd definitly would try to learn a base amount in C++ before getting into specialties such as Game Development. Because of  that, most game books do go over the basics(which I hate, because it leaves less room for the topic of game dev.), but the basics are so rushed, that you won't truly understand how a generic concept of structure of code, applies to other things in the world of programming. I can say, having started out in Basic and thrown right into C++, with those years in C++, I can reuse those skills into any other language, with a small learning curve. But that's because I had 5 years of the basics drilled into me.

Coding / Re: How can I play Background Music in my Visual Basci Application?
« on: September 17, 2007, 09:16:29 pm »
I'm going to go out on a limb and trust my instincts here... I don't think you have a choice unless you use some API that allows embedded music. I think, VB by itself, has to invoke WMP.

163
Yeah, that is pretty much as basic as you can go. Definitly get a whole new coder; Are you actually running this off the DS hardware?

To do this you need to right Click the tool bar and click components, near the bottom should be Windows Media Player.
Add that, then the code would be

MediaPlayer1.FileName = "F:\My Music\GoodRymes.mp3"

This is the path to an MP3 on my computer. set it to the path of the song you want to play, or if the MP3/Wave is in the same folder as the Program then you can just put:

MediaPlayer1.FileName = app.Path

But it is safer to put the whole directory name.

Then you want to hide the media player so it doesnt get in your way...

MediaPlayer1.Visible = False

You could also add buttons to your form for the media player controls.

examples would be, play pause and stop buttons... here are some example codes...

cmdPlay_Click

MediaPlayer1.Play

cmdPause_Click

MediaPlayer1.Pause

cmdStop_Click

MediaPlayer1.Stop

So maybe you can just hide wmp? I dunno, I got this from here:

If you're acquiring an address,that can go on and off. So you may be able to connect 1 second, and lose it the next. If this seemingly always happens, 1 restart your modem and router 2. Go to Start -> Run -> cmd -> type in ipconfig /release, after that's done type in ipconfig /renew

I have a 256mb ATI Radeon x8000, never gave me one once of trouble and still holds up on today's games.

I'm not trying to pause the game, that's just what my function does(well delay things for 2 seconds); An interrupt can ultimatly allow you to enter multiple buttons, create scrolling text boxes, used in sounds... etc... My class ended abruptly before I really understood the how.

And this is on the GBA hardware... there is no Enter, hehe. But I get what you're trying to say.

That's not bad at all, though I'd go for at least 1gb of ram especially for a gaming rig.

Well, that is true, but it's far from perfect. It's possible that it wasn't wiped fully which is why I'd suggest Partition Magic or a low level formatter combined with an NTFS formatting from XP.

Not too sure what file system Linux uses, but XP should be on an ntfs formatted drive. I would use Partition Magic and format the HD in NTFS and it should work for you then.

1) Make sure all of your disk(s) are clean. If they appear dirty, use a soft cotton cloth and wipe the disk in a straight line from the center outward. DO NOT WIPE IN A CIRCULAR MOTION.
2) Try installing from a secondary CD/DVD drive on your machine.
3) Verify that your CD/DVD firmware drivers are up to date with your system / drive manufacturer.
4) Use the selective startup option in MSCONFIG. to do this, at the desktop and click on Start... Run... and type msconfig in the text box, and click OK. When the menu appears, click on the General tab. Under Startup Selection, select Selective Startup and UNCHECK the selection Load Startup Items. Click Apply and then OK. Reboot the computer and retry. You can always return the system to normal startup by going back into MSCONFIG and selecting the Normal Startup option on the General tab and checking Load Startup Items.
5) Ensure that you have cleaned out your temporary directories. To do this, double click on my computer, right click on the appropriate hard drive and left click on properties. Click on the Disk Cleanup button ensure temporary files are checked and proceed to clean up these files.
6) Ensure that your hard drive is not fragmented. To defrag your hard drive, click on Start... Programs... Accessories... System Tools... and select Disk Defragmenter, select the appropriate drive and click Defragment. Please be aware that this process, depending on the size of the drive, may take up to and over an hour to complete.
7) Try copying the content of all of the game CDs/DVD to a folder on the hard drive and running the installation from this location (If you receive a an overwrite prompt select "Yes to all".). Note: You will need approximately 3.5 GB of free space on the hard drive to apply this option. Once all of the content of the CDs/DVD has been copied to the hard drive, double-click on the setup.exe file to start the installation.

Entertainment / House MD Season 4

Alright, let's show some love for House! On Fox.com they promise to only interrupt House once this year for baseball instead of the disgusting 6 times it was interrupted last year. So let's talk about House, guesses for next season, house-isms, memories, etc...

Yeah, 100% of our clients are using it and this is a first. We've tried with several different network printers and by switching to another profile, it defaulted to his local printer and it still behaved the same way. We uninstalled the local printer, still did it... end user has Acrobat and Reader installed, both uninstalled, still did had the same issue. Though knowing Adobe, something may be crawling in the registry.

Here's a good one that no one seems to be able to fix:

We have a user that when they go to File - Print or hit CTRL+P, instead of going to the Print Dialog box in PPT, it just directly goes and prints to the default printer. We can't seem to get it to stop that...

We've tried different user profiles, still does it... we've uninstalled Office, deleted all the folder remains, reinstalled Office and it still does it, we've fiddled with the print commands under File Associations, they're the same as with anyone else machine. Deleted any template we can find, it's defintly not the one ppt as we've tried the same on multiple machines and it works fine and all the ppt's on the user's machine does the same thing by skipping the Print Dialog box.

Anyone run into this?

Running XP SP2, all current patches installed, approx. 2,000 users with the same loadset without the issue. Problem didn't happen until the machine was rebuilt.

Coding / GBA Interrupt tutorial request
« on: September 01, 2007, 11:53:51 pm »
Would anyone know of a good tutorial on using interrupts for the GBA? I had my butt handed to me in class and it's over now and I'm still lost; something with examples would be fantastic.

EDIT: Whoops... I should of noted in case it wasn't clear, I'm looking for the tutorial to be in C\C++

What I'm looking for is to use an interrupt to wait for a button input; Best I could do in the class's short amount of time was creat an interrupt that delayed all actions and progression for 2 seconds. I could probably get some hacked job working, but I need something to better explain the concepts and practice so I can better use the code.

Here is my 2 second time delay code so you know what I'm vaguely aiming for:

Code: [Select]
void Delay(int iTime) {

int iMilliSecs, iSecs;

iMilliSecs = iTime % 1000;

iSecs = (iTime - iMilliSecs) / 1000;

REG_TM0CNT = TIMER_FREQUENCY_256 | TIMER_ENABLE;

REG_TM1CNT = TIMER_OVERFLOW | TIMER_ENABLE;

REG_TM0D = REG_TM1D = 0;

while (REG_TM1D < iSecs) {}

while (REG_TM0D < (65535 / 1000) * iMilliSecs) {}

REG_TM0CNT = REG_TM1CNT = 0;

}
