Title: Game Maker exclusive contest #1
Post by: DJvenom on December 24, 2010, 03:28:25 am
Welcome to DJvenom's GML Master's challenge #1! A contest consisting of a game made in Game Maker, with absolutely no sprites!  The premise for the contest is all graphical display must be done using draw events, but the catch is you may use no sprites at all. Registration is currently open! Programming commence as of 12/25/10 and 1/14/11 shall be the turn-in date. One condition will obviously be providing a .gmd .gm6 or .gmk. An .exe is optional, but very ideal as the contest will be solely judged by the community. Voters will also need to provide statistics for Fun factor, Originality in idea, and Effectiveness in using draw commands.

This leads to the overall winner, as well as 3 honorable mentions in 3 vital categories :)!

If this contest goes over well, I may make this a monthly occurrence to not only get people interested in creating games, but people who are less fluent in GML also have submission's source files to skim and get an idea as to how certain functions work :D! Everybody wins! (figuratively, of course.) Just to sweeten the pot, What hangs in the balance right now will be a Minecraft activation code. I will buy you a key which you can use for yourself, or give to a friend you wish to play beta with :) Teams are welcome, but the prize will then be the humble indie bundle! :)

So as of right now, sign-ups are in effect! I personally am signing up too, to defend my moneys!!

So here is the skinny (tldr):

Let's make this a fun regular thing, ZFGC!!

Current contenders:
♥ Theforeshadower
♥ Mamoruanime
♥ Nabeshin
♥ Knighty
♥ Martijn dh
♥ DJvenom

Does it have to be Game Maker D:

4, 5, 6, 7, or 8. :( I'm sure this is much to the chagrin of a lot of ZFGC, but this is more for the trying to get into programming demographic ;)

:(

Hope we see interesting entries then :)

Also, nothing is stopping anyone who programs in other languages for starting up contests based around them :) I personally only know GML, so naturally I'm not gonna host a contest based on a language I know zero about :P It would be fun to see lots of contests going on, maybe stirring up some activity and potentially new games! If a game made wins, or even gets an honorable mention, I'd hope it's creator would continue it (without the rules holding them back!)

I like your idea and think that you know what you are doing enough to manage it, so if it is cool with you I am going to move the topic to Contests and give you local moderator ability over the board.

This is an interesting challenge!
One idea comes to mind instantly and I'm wondering if I can make it look good, so count me in as well. :)

It is an interesting challenge, but unfortunately I have a good week of snowboarding before me. Maybe if there is still time afterward I'l take a look.

No doubt, a contest of heroes. I will most definitely (as opposed to least definitely) participate.

I'm glad there's no mention of Sounds/Music in the topic. That means there could be a lot of silent games, and that's always fun.

I wonder how many people are going to try to draw Link (from The Legend of Zelda, a popular video game series) with just the draw_* functions. That could be cool.

I'm also curious about how many people will make complex shapes to represent single things as opposed to simply drawing a triangle or circle or square etc...

Some other things that interest me are --- in no particular order --- what specific colors might be used (Game Maker's default set, or make_color*, etc.), what color(s) will be used for backgrounds, whether people will use draw_surface* extensively or not, how simple/complex each game's control scheme is, what games use the Mouse and which use the Keyboard or Keyboard+Mouse, whether people will display outlines only or have filled shapes, what saving mechanisms the games might have (if they are even long enough to need to be saved), how people will distinguish the Player and Enemy/Enemies (if applicable), etc... I look forward to entering the contest and playing every submitted game.

To clarify: we are allowed to use text? If so, you should probably disallow custom fonts that are made in such a way that they can replicate sprites, since that (while neat) would defeat the purpose of the whole thing.

I'm pretty positive DJ means no visible sprites on screen. Like; you're not supposed to use them to represent graphics at all. Fonts (the way I see it anyway) is just a collection of sprites to form text.

No graphical resources, fonts included, unless solely used for drawing text. Fonts like Webdings and Wingdings are permitted, because those fonts are silly and would make for a funny game :)

As a Christmas gift, as of 12/25/10 development is OPEN, but I haven't closed registration. You may still join in the fun :) Also the due date will be January 14th. This gives some late-bloomers a fighting chance. 3 weeks is easily enough time to make some sort of a game. Happy programming!

Sweet, I'll get started now >|;3!

Are invisible mask sprites allowed? (they're needed for a lot of GM's point-to-point functions)

*points at updated rules* They ARE allowed, so long as they aren't visibly drawn, due to GM's shoddy collision checking ;) Also sprites used as sort of "markers" such as red blocks to signify where lava drawing objects will be in-room are permitted, but so long as sprites are NOT visible. This will be looked through thoroughly!

Thank you for clarifying on these very important issues. DJvenom's ability to articulate his feelings and the rules of this contest make it very easy to see how things will go down in the long run. I'll probably draw some text for obvious text-drawing reasons, and use sprite-based masks because I really don't feel like doing otherwise~ And if DJvenom says it's appropriate, it probably is.

Could be some very interesting competition here. I only wonder what DJvenom himself will create. I also wonder if there'll be a Screenshots thread, or if I missed it in clicking back to this Topic to read the new posts. DJvenom will likely be the biggest competitor in this contest. I hope he posts a Screenshot of his excellently-designed game.

LOL I am starting to wonder if this might be a bit too excessive:
I would have suggested you used a for-loop with an array that had the contents of the sprite in it. Unless that'd be too much like having a sprite, or something.

Speaking of excessive, I just wrote a (170-line) script that draws lines and points for text because I didn't want to use any graphical resource, including fonts. It only took 5 hours.

screenshot: http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a297/AlphaMan143/ScreenshotOfContestGame_001.png (are we allowed to post screenshots ???)

That orange thing is supposed to be an unfinished Digdogger... or at least, that's what I'm pretending it is, so I can say I'm getting closer to being done. But really, I'm still working out graphical things, seeing what graphics look good with other graphics, while trying to avoid sprites, obviously. I think I'll use only outlines for objects, and filled primitives for background objects. Not sure yet.

Really confused as to how other people are being close to done. I've been thinking about gameplay ideas since the contest started. I have a few good ideas, although I'm more concerned with screen size and controls. In particular, I haven't decided if I want to use the mouse or not.

Oh well. There's still time left. I'll figure it all out, I'm sure.

I was actually just thinking of having each "frame" in a text document that is loaded on-the-fly as needed.
I actually have alot of draw objects that make actually graphical sense and a movement engine done.

My new idea is more of a simple one so having some excessiveness means nothing to me.

lol typing this out just gave me a new idea.  Have to jump back into GM after a few more SC2 matches.

EDIT: This is what I was working on before but it's a clone of Super Buster Bros. so I thought I would lose some points on that.
Maybe someone can get some ideas from it, though it's not really commented and not optimized.

I usually document game ideas I have for future use. The project I made was conceptualized earlier this month, and the competition was an opportunity to actually make it :P Kind of worked out perfect though because at first I wasn't going to join (haven't touched GM in years) but the compo seemed simple enough to put it into action.

I don't know if I am going to be able to finish.  Found out my dad's mom got pneumonia 3 weeks ago.  Once she started to recover, she fell and broke her back.  Add emphysema to the mix... Going up on a 4 hour drive (I'll wave at you along the way, Travis) to see ehr on the 2nd or 3rd.  Then I have university orientation on the 6th as well as my move in date for the dorms.

I'll keep working on it though.
Mine is not going to be any graphically spectacular as I haven't ever used the draw functions much.

Here's is what i am at so far.
Link is fully animated with walking and the flowers are animated as well.
All using draw, no sprites.

I'll give it a try anyway though cause it seems like it'll be pretty fun and I've got plenty of free time :D

Would I be correct in assuming we can't use "sprite_create_from_screen();" or something to create a sprite resource from something we drew in-game using code?
I know you said "no sprites at all" but I thought I'd double check before getting to work on it.

I already have my concept down on all I've gotta do is start working on the code. :)

Don't think I'll be able to do this, something came up and took a bit of my free time :P

Just moved into MSU, but I forgot to put my GM8 onto my laptop so now I have none of work.

BTW, Travis, you should show me around town, like all the good burger joints, bars, etc. :p

Cleaned up the topic. Keep bland sarcastic comments to self. I'm running this contest for fun, not for people to get at eachother's throats. I also agree that a LOT of your replies have come across as almost trying to provoke a negative reply, or trying to passive-aggressively insult people. Who Mamoruanime chooses as a composer is his own business. There is absolutely no reason to say he better offer a mute button, or you'll shut your sound off when you play. It's insulting to him, AND his composer. Also, saying people with good graphical abilities have an advantage here is probably the most untrue thing imaginable. The point of the contest is to make a game with 0 graphics, so people who rely on their artistic abilities for games are at a severe DISadvantage. I'm possibly not going to make the deadline due to it :(

New rendering system, and yes the brick texture was made with draw_point :)

Double-post updatestravaganza:
The next contest has already been decided, and will be open to all programmers :) It's gonna be a gauntlet of sorts, and will be running all of February. Sign-ups and details will begin and be posted immediately on the 15th!

I was gonna knock more of mine out before this evening, but I just got off an 8 hour day I worked on 3 hours of sleep, so I'm gonna sleep instead and turn in a very incomplete project :( I basically cheated for a large chunk of mine, using draw_point anyways. Who woulda guessed not being able to have sprites would hinder me? :3c At least I have a base for what can now become an actual project, which is why I started this contest anyways! Hope I at least stand a chancu!

I didn't do as much work on my game as I wanted, but I'm finished, I guess.

My entry is a platformer/puzzle game.
It may look silly when you start playing, but the game get's more complex as you play.

Well this is frustrating as hell. My game now crashes after 28 seconds... Inexplicably. No error. Game just blacks and shuts down. This blows because it was working fine last night, and it's ALWAYS 0:28 after you initiate the game, because my game has a timer... and NOTHING happens after initiation aside from creating the GUI and starting the global.started variable...

Update: Weird... if it doesn't crash at 0:28, it crashes at 1:28 or 2:28... Something not right here...

I will not be entering my work as it is far FAR from finished. All I've got is a fractal generator to pump out grafity-like backgrounds. I HAD planned to use that grapical style, via one big surface, for all graphics in a very basic 1945 styled game, but never got around to starting on the actual gameplay :( Somehow gameplay seemed important in a game.

Well, hope to see it completed in the near future :) It looks like it's going to be between Knight, Mammy, and myself this time.
